This includes IPTV, collaboration and cloud computing, videoconferencing, and mobile payment to name a few. Several industry researchers estimated that the market size of the global telecommunications industry may reach $1.8 trillion – $2 trillion in the next three years.
We downgrade our recommendation on NII Holdings, Inc. (NIHD) to Underperform backed by our assessment that the company s nightmare will continue in the near future. NII Holdings reported dismal financial results for the third quarter of 2011. Both the top line and bottom line were well below the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Management has slashed its fiscal 2011 financial outlook, mainly driven by the volatile macro-economic condition coupled with significant depreciation of several Latin American currencies in comparison with U.S. dollars. Moreover, stiff competitive scenarios in Latin American markets are other impediments for such a reduced outlook. We believe intensifying competition and increased promotional expenses may reduce the company’s near-term growth opportunities. We do not find any immediate catalysts and expect NII Holdings to report weak financial results for the

Telecommunications industry is witnessing consistent growth despite experiencing a sluggish U.S. economy. Most of the large national telecom service providers together with the regional prepaid telecom operators generated net subscriber addition in the third quarter of 2011. In the last couple of years, capital spending constraints among telecom operators due to severe recessionary conditions were the main hindrance to the industry’s growth. However, with the economic recovery in progress, albeit a slow pace, telecom service providers are gradually expanding their network coverage on the back of significant subscriber growth. The telecommunications industry is a major driver of global economic recovery. An unprecedented growth of high-speed mobile Internet traffic, particularly for wireless data and video, has transformed this industry into the most evolving, inventive and keenly contested industry.
In a significant move, the Mexican wireless regulator Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones (CoFeTel) approved yesterday the auction bid submitted by Grupo Televisa S.A. (TV) and its partner Nextel for a 30 MHz nationwide block in the 1.7 GHz band of wireless frequency. Last July, Televisa and Nextel together also won a block of frequency ranging from 1850 MHz – 1990 MHz. This bid raises several controversies because the Televisa-Nextel bid size for 30 MHz spectrum block is of just $14 million. This is far below the $400 million bid size by the two largest Mexican wireless operators, America Movil SAB (AMX) and Telefonica S.A. (TEF), for another block of wireless spectrum. Despite this low bid size, Televisa-Nextel venture remains the only bidder due to the CoFeTel rules that restrict the amount of wireless spectrum

The Mexican government has finally announced that it will complete the much-awaited wireless spectrum (radio bandwidth) auctions in the country by the end of June 2010. In November 2009, the Mexican telecom regulator Cofetel divulged the bidding rules for the radio-electric spectrum to be offered to qualified bidders in two separate auctions. The regulator will announce the winners within 30 days of the submission of bids on May 25, 2010. Interested bidders have to be approved by the Mexican antitrust watchdog Federal Competition Commission. In the first auction, Cofetel will offer nine blocks of frequencies in the 1,850 megahertz (MHz) – 1,990 MHz band across eight of Mexico’s nine wireless operating regions including the capital, Mexico City.
