By the closing bell, the energy sector had dented the S&P 500, while investors’ apprehensions about Hewlett-Packard’s decision of merging its printing and personal computing businesses dragged down the Dow. However, tech shares boosted the Nasdaq into the positive zone. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 0.3% to settle at 13,124.62. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) edged down 0.2% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,402.89. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index was the only gainer among the other benchmarks and moved up by 0.04% to settle at 3,075.32. (CSTR) to launch nationwide video rental and online streaming services comparable to those of its rival Netflix Inc. (NFLX). The venture would combine Coinstar’s Redbox new release DVDs and Blu-ray disc rentals with an on-demand streaming and download service from Verizon. The service is slated to be introduced in the second half of the year. While the financial terms were not disclosed, Verizon will hold a majority 65% stake in the venture while Coinstar own the remaining 35%.
The deluge of this morning’s favorable economic and earnings reports should help stocks sustain Wednesday’s Fed-inspired gains. We got positive weekly Initial Jobless Claims numbers and a better-than-expected Durable Goods Orders reading. On the earnings front, Caterpillar’s (CAT) blowout results will likely ease some of the lingering concerns about weakness in China and other emerging markets. Of this morning’s economic releases, the most important number was the roughly in-line Jobless Claims reading, showing a gain of 21K to 377K. Please recall that we saw an unusually big drop last week, likely resulting from complications in seasonally adjusting the data at this time of the year. Today’s reading goes some way towards correcting that. The four-week average, which smooths out the week-to-week fluctuation, dropped by 2.5K to 377.5K, maintaining its downtrend

Such consistent performance from DIRECTV is mainly attributable to customer screening, target marketing, innovative product developments, avoiding disputes with content manufacturers and most importantly the popularity of its NFL Sunday Ticket promotion, which drove subscriber addition of 327,000 in the U.S. during the quarter. The solid result was attributable to double-digit revenue growth, significant margin expansion and record net customer additions. Management’s aggressive promotional plan of offering popular NFL SUNDAY TICKET coupled with upgrading customers with premium plans worked wonders for the company. Third Quarter Highlights Total revenue in the reported quarter came in at $6,844 million, up 13.6% year over year, and ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6,737 million. This was primarily attributable to massive subscriber growth in the U.S. and Latin American regions, solid average monthly revenue per subscriber growth and increasing contribution from the domestic market.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Thursday, September 1, 2011 It’s anyone’s guess how Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) will handle the departure of its prodigal son, Steve Jobs. The market has taken the news in stride as Apple’s stock is up roughly three and a half percent since the news was announced last Wednesday. But how will Apple replace a man that led it from likely bankruptcy in 1997 to the largest company in the world in 2011, if only for a brief moment? Nothing against Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, but we don’t really know much about him. Especially if he has the same knack for understanding his market like Jobs did. It’s a tough act to follow.
by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Friday, August 5, 2011: Issue #1572 If someone were to ask you, “Are you a trader or an investor?”… how would you answer? Professional day traders aside, traders rarely make money “trading” stocks. Investors, on the other hand, pay little attention to the day-to-day fluctuations in the market, and often retire early. Most importantly, they rarely lose money. If they do, it’s a small amount. The distinctions between a trader and an investor are important ones. Investors generally avoid something I like to call “PDOC,” while traders are intimately familiar with it. But not for long. What Amazon has planned could challenge both tech giants in one fell swoop. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that Amazon will release a tablet PC by October. As more details emerge, we get a clearer picture of what Amazon will offer. Some of the biggest developments are the new additions to Amazon’s video streaming service. It was reported Thursday that Amazon closed a deal with NBCUniversal for streaming video rights, after reaching a similar deal with CBS (NYSE: CBS) last week. Amazon currently offers unlimited streaming of its digital content

The day was also marked by disappointing corporate results, and the fear-gauge index posted its biggest percentage jump in two weeks, reflecting heightened investor anxiety. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plunged 145 points in intra-day trade before recouping losses partially and finally settled at 12,592.80, dropping 88 points or 0.7%. And this is hardly a sign of complacency. The markets may not be as efficient as some academics believe, but they are smart enough to evaluate America’s financial health. Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.

After the indices posted their best weekly performance in two years, euro-zone debt fears gripped the markets yet again to dampen investor sentiment on Tuesday after Moody’s downgraded Portugal’s debt rating to “junk”. The benchmarks ended their five-day winning streak, beginning the month of July on a low note. Investors refrained from betting big ahead of a row of economic reports scheduled for release this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) shed 0.1% and finished the day at 12,569.87. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) closed down 0.1% at 1,337.88. However, news from Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) boosted the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index by 0.4% and it settled at 2,825.77.
Viacom(VIAB), the leading entertainment company in U.S. once again got involved in a legal tussle with cable TV distributor Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC) regarding the streaming of cable TV shows on iPad. It all started earlier this year when Time Warner Cable (TWC) launched a new application that allows live cable television viewing for its subscribers on the iPad while at home. But Viacom along with few other media entertainment companies objected to this application and demanded extra fees from the company. According to these media companies, Time Warner Cable is apparently violating the programme distribution rights by streaming their channels on iPads. In April 7, 2011,Viacom became the first media company to file a lawsuit against Time Warner Cable, thus ushering in a new media war. In response to

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Tuesday, June 28, 2011 In recent years, the bright lights of Hollywood dimmed as its revenue declined, thanks in large part to the advent of new technologies. Income streams from sales of CDs and DVDs slowed to a trickle thanks to the streaming of media via the internet and companies like Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX). Netflix is now the largest subscription entertainment company in the United States. It has over 23.6 million subscribers and accounts for 30 percent of all internet downloads in the United States during peak hours. The technology Hollywood believed could help them – 3-D films – is a flop: Audiences are put off by the high ticket prices. But now, as if from a Hollywood movie, another technology has appears on

Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC), the second-largest cable operator in the U.S. after Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), is planning to acquire cable operation from NewWave Communications. The transaction is expected to cost Time Warner $260 million and will be closed by the end of 2011, subject to regulatory approvals. The acquisition will help the company in two ways. First, it will allow Time Warner to expand its footprint to non-urban areas where NewWave mainly operates. Second, Time Warner will cumulate 70,000 basic cable customers, 42,000 Internet users and 26,000 telecom subscribers of NewWave Communications. The urban areas are becoming highly competitive as big telecom giants like Verizon Wireless Communication (VZ) and AT&T, Inc (T) are offering cable services through Fiber to the Node (FTTN) or Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) communications

(NFLX) may pay $200 million to $300.0 million a year to renew a licensing agreement for movies and television shows with Liberty Media Corp.’s Starz (LSTZA) unit, as reported by Reuters. Currently, Netflix pays approximately $30.0 million a year as license fees for the deal, which was signed in 2008 and expires in 2012.
We reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on DIRECTV (DTV). The company declared excellent financial results for the first quarter of 2011. These solid results were the combined effect of a double-digit growth of the top line, significant margin and ARPU expansion, and better-than-expected net customer addition. Management’s strategy to target high-end customers paid-off nicely as the demand for the company’s HD channels and digital-video recording services sky rocketed in the reported quarter. DIRECTV remains one of the few pay-TV service providers that are still generating commendable video subscriber growth. DIRECTV is reaping the benefit of affluent quality subscribers, who are willing to pay for the company’s costly premium services and programs with low churn rate.In the first quarter of 2011, DIRECTV added 184,000 net subscribers in the U.S. and 427,000

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, April 21, 2011 A showdown is happening in Hollywood… though not the kind seen in a Western. On one side of the corral stand Hollywood movie studios. On the other, the largest cinema chains in the United States. And like what happened at the O.K. Corral, it could change history. The problem started several weeks ago with a few major Hollywood movie studios: Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and 20th Century Fox.
