Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Google TV has now been around long enough for the geeks to play around with it. And they have come back with disappointing reviews. While most were excited at the concept of wedlock between the TV and Internet, the marriage itself looks destined to be challenging. An article on allthingsd.com was particularly enlightening, highlighting all the basic problems in the version 1.0 product, from the cumbersome keyboard/controller to the complex navigation. The system tried out was a Logitech set top box (“STB”) and remote control on a Sony Corp (SNE) TV. Google has kept search as the main feature, enabling users to select a show from not just TV but the whole Internet. Even recorded shows could be searched, provided you were using a Dish Network Corporation

On Friday, the markets ended slightly higher on positive economic data and better-than-expected rise in consumer sentiment. However, the markets’ upward movement was subdued somewhat due to investors’ cautious attitude towards European debt crisis, tensions between the two Korean nations and apprehensions about the tax-cuts deal agreement. Nonetheless, the upward movement of the markets resulted in the indices gaining their two-year highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.35% to 11,410. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 0.60% to 1,240.40 and closed at its highest level since September 2008. The Nasdaq was up 0.80% to close at 2,637.54 and reached its highest level since end of 2007. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) rose above 17.
by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist Friday, December 10, 2010: Issue #1405 Here’s an easy one for you: Name any growth stock. Which names spring to your mind? Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is an obvious one. Or perhaps Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). But how about another company that has carved out its own niche, thanks to some creative, out-of-the-box thinking and has crushed its competition in the process? So far out of the box, in fact, that Wall Street analysts can’t even grasp what the box is. I’m talking about Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) – a company that has taken a really long-term view of its market. Heck, the firm has redefined its market, much to the dismay of its rivals. Bye-Bye, Blockbuster What a difference a few years makes… In February 2009, I

by Alexander Moschina, Investment U Research Thursday, December 2, 2010 The company that crushed Blockbuster (OTC.BLOAQ.PK) is about to take things to another level. Three levels, actually. A large chunk of Netflix’s (Nasdaq: NFLX) newest and most promising business will soon be in the hands of little-known Colorado tech company, Level 3 Communications (Nasdaq: LVLT). News that Level 3, along with two much larger rivals, will stream online video content to millions of Netflix subscribers has triggered a big increase in trading volume on LVLT over the past few weeks. And this despite the fact that no pricing details have been released. But it’s easy to see why in-the-know investors are getting bullish on the company, following the success of similar deals in this rapidly expanding industry… Note to the

by Alexander Moschina, Investment U Research Thursday, November 4, 2010 As if it doesn’t already make enough headlines, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is about to make even more… One day, it’s investing $5 billion in offshore wind projects. The next day, it’s providing a free nationwide phone service. Six years ago, the California tech company’s shares debuted on the stock market at $85. But as of November 3, 2010, shares traded for $618 – a massive 627% surge. And its $197 billion market cap is larger than Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO), AOL (NYSE: AOL), and the Chinese IP giant Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) combined. The Internet search provider has even held its own against the big boys of the hardware world – Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). For example… Search Engines:

But these days the company isn’t just making its own shareholders rich… it’s spreading the wealth elsewhere… China Unicom (NYSE: CHU) shot up more than 10% after inking a three-year contract with Apple in August. It’s now the exclusive iPhone service provider in China – which boasts an enormous cellular market of more than 800 million. Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) shares jumped 11% when Apple agreed to allow app developers to use its Flash software. Yesterday, the company announced that it has decided to stop selling direct-to-consumer FLO TV devices, which include palm-sized gadgets and displays for cars. Qualcomm’s diversification into mobile TV venture has turned out to be a real disaster despite the fact that FLO TV has carrier-partnership agreements with the two largest telecom operators, viz, Verizon Wireless (VZ), and AT&T (T). The main reason for this is that none of the popular smartphones supports FLO

A leading provider of online movie rental services, Netflix Inc. (NFLX), signed a long-term, exclusive movie licensing deal with the media and entertainment company Relativity Media LLC. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The agreement allows Netflix to stream Relativity’s major movies online for a subscription only months after release in DVD format. According to Associated Press (AP), the deal reflects Netflix’s strategy of delivering first-run movies online, which the subscribers can access through different platforms such as personal computers, laptops and mobile phones, as compared to the conventional DVD order-by-mail system. This agreement also reflects a shift in distribution deals after theatrical releases. Previously, rights to broadcast movies were pre-sold to pay TV channels for as long as nine years after their release. With this agreement, subscribers

The DVD and streaming video company Netflix Inc. (NFLX) announced that it has selected Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) as its primary content delivery network for movies and TV episodes streamed instantly over the Internet. Netflix is the largest online movie rental subscription service in the United States providing subscribers access to more than 18,000 movies, television and other filmed entertainment titles. Netflix has a strong subscriber base due to better subscription services. The company also has a larger number of customers signing up for its DVD-by-mail program. We believe the availability of Netflix rentals over the Internet has been the driving force behind its strong customer and earnings growth. Further, growth at Netflix has been fueled by the increasing penetration of broadband and momentum in online media and entertainment. According

Yesterday in a speech, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski has recommended a new rule to apply net neutrality to all telecom and cable service providers. Net neutrality will prohibit internet service providers (ISP), especially the phone and cable companies, from discriminating against users or applications. ISPs must grant consumers equal access to all legal web applications and services. The rule was so far applicable to the wired services providers, but the new proposal from the FCC wants to bring the flourishing wireless industry under scrutiny. The FCC’s new proposal is, in general, bad news for large telecom and cable operators like AT&T (T), Verizon Wireless (VZ), T-Mobile, a division of Deutsch Telekom (DT) and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA). As of now, these companies can restrict any devices, applications, services,

The satellite television provider TiVo Inc. (TIVO) is a pioneer in digital video recording (DVR) technology. The company won a patent infringement lawsuit against EchoStar Communications Corp (SATS), the parent company of Dish Network Corp. (DISH). Under the 5-year multimedia patent infringement, TiVo has been awarded a sanction of $200 million ($110 million in damages and $90 million in sanctions in addition to attorney fees) from the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Texas. Dish was spun off from EchoStar in 2008. It was found that a software in Dish Network’s set-top boxes violated TiVo live TV technology that consists of features like the ability to pause and rewind live programming. Earlier, TiVo had won its 5-year patent lawsuit against EchoStar, forcing it to choose between the payment

Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI) – Another Nail In The Coffin Can you hear that, Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI)? It’s the sound of obsolescence. With the news that LG Electronics will be producing high-definition televisions that will stream movies from Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), you can add another nail in the coffin for Blockbuster. At first, Netflix’s threat to Blockbuster seemed laughable. But now, with more consumers cutting back and looking for instant entertainment, low monthly costs and the ease of Netflix are really starting to squeeze Blockbuster. And that’s not to say that Blockbuster hasn’t given its rivals a hand. There was the misguided and disastrous attempt to merge with financial-albatross Circuit City (OTC: CCTYQ), the botched roll-out of the “no more late fees – just other fees” program and the complete failure

NFLX: The Netflix Index Nuevo-indices, like Estee Lauder’s (NYSE: EL) “lipstick index,” the bartender index or the video game index, all have their day in the sun during market downturns. Often they’re dismissed as distractions, or excuses for poor performance. But their fundamentals are based on real consumer trends and psychology. Areas like entertainment, clothing and luxury items are often cut back during downturns. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t replaced with substitutes. Frugal doesn’t mean spendthrift. Consumers are still buying. Purchases are justified by their reduced cost, or the “savings” from not spending money elsewhere. Entertainment like Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) carries a cost – but nothing like going to a movie three times a week. It’s this mentality that we can find profits in. Many companies have benefited from
