Dejour farms out development of West Grand Valley By Steven Ralston, CFA Dejour Energy (DEJ) announced the execution of an agreement to sell and farm-out approximately 7,450 acres (gross and net) to an unnamed large-cap NYSE-listed exploration & production (E&P) company. The transaction includes a commitment to carry Dejour through the drilling and completion of three earning wells, along with Dejour being able to retain a 20% working interest in over 5,100 acres of the project. (AMZN) in the maintenance, repair & operations (MRO) space. Grainger’s second quarter 2012 earnings increased 18% year over year to a record $2.63 per share, while revenues advanced 12% to $2.25 billion. EPS in the quarter was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate but revenues fell short. Grainger remains focused on expanding its product offerings and growing the share of its private label products. The company’s catalog, issued in February 2012, offers around 413,000 products compared with 350,000 in the February 2011 issue. The company has a long-term vision to expand the count to 500,000 products by 2015. It has historically seen approximately 2% incremental growth

Discouraging U.S. nonfarm payroll data dragged the benchmarks to sharp losses on Friday. This was the third straight time that the US labor market showed such dismal signs. The report comes during a week which has already witnessed a few weak economic readings. Eventually, except for the Nasdaq, the benchmarks ended the week on a losing note. Crude oil prices also moved lower and the energy sector suffered a great deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) suffered a triple-digit loss as it slumped 124.20 points or 1% to close at 12,772.47. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) dropped 0.9% to finish Friday’s trading session at 1,354.68. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 1.3% and was down 38.79 points to 2,937.33. However, meager gains failed to prevent the Dow and S&P 500 from suffering their worst weekly performance this year. Global economic concerns weighed on investors through the week and their influence carried onto Friday. Moreover, tepid housing data made matters worse on Friday, limiting gains. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) gained 0.3% and closed the day at 13,080.73. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was also up 0.3% and finished Friday’s trading session at 1,397.11. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index edged up 0.1% and settled at 3,067.92. The gains were primarily a result of European developments as Italian government won a confidence vote on austerity measures. It was a choppy session for the benchmarks thanks to “quadruple-witching,” which is the expiration of four types of futures contracts. With the possibility of euro nations such as Italy and Spain’s debt ratings being downgraded, benchmarks ended the week sharply lower.
We maintain our long-term Neutral recommendation on Murphy Oil Corporation (MUR) as the company continues to operate in a very competitive environment with peers having greater resources, which continues to impact Murphy’s profitability and ability to expand. The company’s success in the oil and gas sector hinges on its ability to replenish reserves with new findings. Profitability is seriously hampered by the company’s inability to find new resource and unsuccessful drilling. Failed drilling attempts in Congo, Suriname and more recently in Indonesia have severely affected Murphy’s stock performance. Among the positives are the company’s strong balance sheet and its ability to generate consistent cash flows. Besides, the step taken by Murphy, during the third quarter, to exit its refining business and concentrate more on its exploration & production (E&P) operations

Hopes of EU overcoming its sovereign debt crisis gathered strength after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said US would join other EU leaders to seek out a solution to the euro zone debt situation. Markets further rose on news that United Technologies Corporation is looking to finance a major U.S. acquisition. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained 0.7% or 75.91 points and finished the day at 11,509.09 marking its longest winning streak since 1st July. For the week, the blue chip index rose 4.7%.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Tuesday, August 9, 2011 There was a time when a trip to the bank would take quite awhile. Friday payday lines were sometimes unbearable. Banks even stocked lollipops to keep restless children quiet during the long waits. Skip to 2011 and many bank branches are a ghost town. After all, the bank will still collect income on investments of deposits. They’ll also still cash in on numerous fees (which continue to rise). However, there are some

Standard & Poor’s downgraded the US credit rating by a notch, delivering a crushing blow to benchmarks on Monday. Tension from the other side of the Atlantic also dampened sentiment as Europe was gripped by debt woes. Investors also struggled to find a clear answer about whether the recent turmoil means that another recession is in the offing, at a time when the economy is yet to recover from the last one. The credit rating agency’s decision came in on Friday last week after the closing bells. Monday was thus the first trading day after the downgrade, and almost immediately benchmarks ended up in the red. This is the first time that the US has lost its AAA rating since 1917. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) posted its sixth-worst

For the month it was up 15.0%; worse than the $44.0 billion consensus expectation. On a year over year basis, the total trade deficit was up 19.1% from $42.17 billion a year ago. The trade balance has two major parts: trade in goods and trade in services. America’s problem is always on the goods side; we actually routinely have a small surplus in services. Relative to April, the goods deficit rose to $64.88 billion from $58.16 billion. That is a month to month increase of 11.6%. Relative to a year ago, the goods deficit was up 19.4% from

Crude Oil The improving economic scene – both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide – and the continued unrest in producing countries had been the main driver of the oil rally, which saw the commodity zoom past the $110 per barrel level earlier this year. However, apprehensions about high U.S. crude stocks, the release of emergency oil supplies from government-held strategic reserves into the world market, and uncertainty over oil supply disruptions in the Middle East have been weighing on investor sentiment, weakening oil prices to less than $100 a barrel. The Alberta government will fund C$745 million for the project, while the Canadian government will contribute C$120 million, netting C$865 million ($873 million). The company did not disclose any financial details of the agreement. The deal entitles the U.S. integrated giant to explore two blocks, DS-08-10 and DS-08-11, of which ConocoPhillips holds full 100% working interest. The blocks cover a total area of 5158 square kilometers (1.27 million acres) and are located 1000–1500 meters (3,300–5,000 feet) under water. The awarded acreages are located about 280 kilometers (175 miles) from the port city of Chittagong. After the markets recorded its first sixth consecutive week of losses since the fall of 2002 last week, gains akin to yesterday’s will enable the benchmarks avoid a seventh straight week of losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged 123 points or 1.0% to close at 12,076.11, recording its largest gains for the month. Posting the strongest gains since April 20, the Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) gained 1.3% to settle at 1,287.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 1.5% and settled at 2,678.72. This was followed by authorization from the company’s Board of Directors. As a result, the transaction – announced in January – is now ready to take effect on June 30, 2011. While rising concerns about the euro-zone debt situation significantly dampened benchmarks, disappointing manufacturing data from China stepped in to further pressurize the indices amidst the lack of any domestic data. All of the 30 components that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), except one, were in the red and the index declined 1.1% to close at 12,381.26. Only McDonald’s Corp.
The Trade Deficit rose in March to $48.18 billion from $45.44 billion in January (revised down from $45.76 billion. The rise in the trade deficit is bad news for the economy, and the level is very dangerous. For the month it was up 6.0%, and it was worse than the $47.7 billion consensus expectation. On a year-over-year basis, the total trade deficit was up 21.9% from $39.51 billion a year ago. The trade balance has two major parts: trade in goods and trade in services. America’s problem is always on the goods side; we actually routinely have a small surplus in services. Relative to February, the goods deficit rose to $62.11 billion from $59.10 billion. That is a month-to-month increase of 5.1%. Relative to a year ago, the goods deficit
