With the return of business as well as leisure travelers coupled with decelerating supply growth, pricing power remained steady in the year. Improvement in the U.S. economy and the consequent rise in operating metrics helped most of the hoteliers report strong quarterly results. Group bookings appear to be gaining momentum and the companies registered strong advance bookings and pricing for 2012 and beyond. Booking windows are also lengthening. However, macro headwinds can partially restrain the booking momentum in 2012.
New York-based Morgans Hotel Group Co. (MHGC) announced that its chief executive officer (CEO) Fred Kleisner will resign upon the completion of his tenureship on December 31. The hotel company appointed Fred Kleisner as CEO in December 2007, after his successful stint as an interim CEO since September 2007. We believe Fred Kleisner navigated Morgans Hotel through the economic slowdown and decline in leisure demand quite impressively. His experience in the hotel industry as well as dedicated service has helped the company scale new heights. Morgans Hotel has only a month to find a suitable replacement for Fred Kleisner. The company has also appointed the executive search firm Spencer Stuart to speed up the search. Fred Kleisner has offered to extend his period of service, if the company fails to

Morgans Hotel Group Co. (MHGC) announced recently that it has refinanced in full the existing mortgage debt secured by two hotels in London. The company enjoys a 50% ownership through a joint venture with an affiliate of Walton Street Capital in these two hotels. Morgans Hotel Group’s operates the two hotels – Sanderson and St Martins Lane in London under a long-term management contract. Extended by Aareal Bank, the new credit facility is a GBP100 million loan without recourse to Morgans Hotel. This implies that the loan is secured by collateral, which is usually property, and if Morgans Hotel Group defaults, Aareal Bank can seize the collateral, but cannot seek any further compensation from the company. The new loan extends the maturity period of its debt and expires in July
