Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP) declared weak financial results for the first quarter of 2012, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimates. In the previous quarter, the company’s customer churn rate was 3.3% compared with 3.1% in the prior-year quarter. Even worse is management’s prediction that the second quarter churn rate will be much higher at 4.2% (at par with the second quarter of 2011). The major concern for Leap Wireless is the growing competition in the U.S. low-cost prepaid wireless phone market. Traditionally, the company competes with MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS), Boost Mobile, the prepaid subsidiary of Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), and Tracfone, the prepaid subsidiary of America Movil S.A.B. (AMX). Recently, the two largest nationwide carriers, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. (T) entered the wireless prepaid phone market after the

MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS) – one of the lowest cost wireless service providers in the U.S. – has announced price raises for its unlimited plan. Subscribers will now have to pay $70.00 per month instead of $60.00 for its unlimited 4G LTE data plan. Further, the carrier has also announced bandwidth throttling to three of its 4G LTE plans and slowed down speed to the 3G level after the usage of 250MB, 2.5GB or 5GB depending upon the plan in order to manage network traffic and reduce bandwidth congestion. Given the massive demand for wireless data services, MetroPCS is practicing bandwidth throttling like many other carriers. In February, AT&T Inc. (T) came up with similar policies as it was falling short of bandwidth. For an unlimited plan, the company axed

The present wireless market is ready for the incipient boom in the wireless data space with expanding broadband services. Data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds and has more than doubled over the last three years. As a result, U.S. carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising mobile data traffic. The situation becomes even worse with the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones. Stiff competitive pressure and limited wireless spectrum licenses add to the difficulties. The carriers are in need of additional airwaves to expand their high-speed services and support 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services. As a result, the wireless industry in 2012 is intent on tapping unused spectrum to expand their capacity. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), which

Given the growing market for Google’s (GOOG) Android-based smartphones, Sprint Nextel Corporation (S) is adding another such device to its existing line of Android smartphones. The company launched ZTE Fury, an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone at $19.99 after a rebate of $50.00. The USP of the phone not only lies in having an Android operating system but also in its pricing which remains pocket friendly. All this while, Sprint primarily focused on introducing top-end devices, like including Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 4 and 4S in October last year. These devices have remained accretive for the carrier, generating solid margin gains. But their high subsidies, representing nearly 40% of the device’s cost continues to be a significant headwind going forward. As a result, we believe that company’s interest in marketing handsets like

Leap Wireless International Inc. (LEAP) posted mixed financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011. Though EPS managed to beat the Zacks Consensus Estimates, revenue significantly fell below it. During 2011, Leap wireless restructured its business model through which it is emphasizing on the high ARPU generating smartphone customers, while shedding less profitable wireless broadband subscribers as these users generally place huge load on its network. Management is hopeful regarding its business strategy for future subscriber growth. Nevertheless, precipitous economic volatility in the U.S. is a major concern since the company is primarily dependent on the low-income customers, who are very much susceptible to economic downtrend. Meanwhile, competition in the low-end prepaid wireless services market has become intensely competitive. We therefore reaffirm our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.
Verizon Communications’ (VZ) proposed $3.9 billion purchase of wireless spectrum is facing a major setback. T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, is urging Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to block the deal citing unfair competition. T-Mobile as a strong foe stated that the purchase would lead to concentration of excess spectrum in the hands of Verizon, which is already the largest U.S. mobile service provider with the maximum number of licenses. The deal would also allow the cross selling of each other’s products and services, and raise concerns among some politicians and consumer advocacy groups.
In a technology driven world, it has become a prerequisite for the telecom companies to upgrade its mobile technology with the high-speed networks. Currently, the Telecom industry is focusing on the next-generation technology (i.e. fourth generation [4G]), which is based on Long Term Evolution (LTE). LTE has become the life-blood for operators across the world. It is an evolution of GSM and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) standards. Significance Introduced in mid-2009, LTE became a standard technology in the U.S. in 2011. It is the fastest wireless network technology and uses radio spectrum allowing more data transfers with the same bandwidth used by any 3G or other devices. LTE has the capability to handle larger traffic without incurring extra cost. It provides a downstream rate of at least 100 Mbps

The telecommunications industry is growing consistently despite a volatile U.S. economy. This industry is identified as a major driver of economic recovery. Telecommunications is one of the few industries to have seen rapid technological improvement even during the last recession. Given the significance of the telecommunications industry as an infrastructure product, we expect the overall economic dynamics to shift in its favor. We also expect the telecommunications industry to grow faster in 2012 compared with 2011. Invention and Innovation The major thrust for the telecommunications sector is coming from nonstop network inventions by carriers. The introduction of super-fast networks such as HSPA+ and LTE has enabled handset developers and chipset manufacturers to develop innovative products that are compatible with the latest network technologies. While these giants remain eminently solid, yet their outlook is opaque. Also, issues such as huge capital costs, uncertain returns on investment, high penetration rates and churn (customer switch) rates provide continued room for concern. Furthermore, the proposed $39 billion merger between AT&T and T-Mobile USA to create the largest mobile phone entity shows increased chances of failure rather than success. The deal is under regulatory attack even as AT&T is seeking to divest substantial assets to salvage the takeover. Sprint Nextel Corp. The company has recently joined hands with ABC, to bring ABC and subsidiary lifestyle content such as Disney Channel, Disney XD and ESPN on all its 4G handsets via MetroSTUDIO video on-demand application. The deal terms were however not disclosed. The company’s MetroSTUDIO was launched in September 2010 to enhance customers’ entertainment experience. Cameron said that the deal – representing its first full subsea system supply in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea – includes the development of wellheads, trees, flow bases, electro-hydraulic multiplexed controls, connections, pipeline end manifolds and other associated subsea equipment. The company expects delivery to begin in early 2012. Earlier in March, AT&T was keen to bring T-Mobile under its fold in a deal that would to be the largest in the wireless industry since 2004.
Verizon Communications (VZ) recently unveiled its first unlimited prepaid plan for $50.00 a month. The plan would include unlimited voice, text and internet services. Prepaid wireless services remain an emerging business for U.S. telecom carriers, accounting for approximately 20% of the nation’s total wireless subscribers. Over the years, this segment has registered significant growth owing to the economic downturn that has made users wary of long-term contracts and additional cost burdens. As a result, users are always looking forward to prepaid plans that allow maximum cost optimization against post-paid plans. The launch marks Verizon’s foray into unlimited no contract plans which have been largely dominated by rivals like TracFone Wireless, Sprint Nextel (S), MetroPCS Communications (PCS) and Leap Wireless (LEAP).
We believe MetroPCS Communications (PCS), one of the leading providers of unlimited prepaid wireless service in the U.S., remains well positioned to gain from the successful launch and execution of “Wireless for All” service plans. Further, growing demand for Android smartphones and the company’s entry into fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) wireless broadband services ensure opportunities for long term growth. However, we remain concerned about the company’s highly leveraged balance sheet, which may limit its ability to invest in growth initiatives going forward. Moreover, higher promotional expenses to roll out new service plans, new smartphones offerings, a competitive market and regulatory issues keep us on the sidelines. MetroPCS continues to benefit from the successful launch and execution of Wireless for All. During the first quarter, the company recorded subscriber net

The stock price has fallen by more than 38% in the last one year and is trading at the low-end of its 52-week price range. Aftera gap of two consecutive quarters, Leap Wireless generated net customer addition in the fourth quarter of 2010. This turnaround was mainly due to management’s strategy to introduce high-end smartphones, especially those running on Android operating system developed by Google Inc. (GOOG).
Charles River Laboratories (CRL) recently discussed its business outlook with investors and clarified its focus on four key initiatives to drive shareholder value. The company also announced 2011 guidance and made some changes to its 2010 outlook. The four key initiatives are as follows: Improving operating margins: The company aims to generate adjusted operating margin of 20% within three-to-five years, which will be driven by cost control and operating efficiencies. The company pegs the Research Models and Services (RMS) segment margins at or slightly above 30% and Pre Clinical Services (PCS) margins in the high teens. The expected improvement in PCS, however, depends on the extent of recovery in the business that has been affected by low demand from pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients.
We are upgrading our recommendation on U.S. Cellular (USM) to Neutral from Underperform. Although the largest wireless Chicago-based carrier missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in the recently concluded third quarter, the increased penetration of smartphones led to earnings growth from the year-ago level. Currently, the stock has a Zacks #3 Rank (Hold). The company’s third quarter earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny and reported a 7% year-over-year increase. On the other hand, revenues dipped 0.3% year over year. Growth in data revenue (31%) was fully offset by lower voice revenues and inbound roaming revenues resulting from Verizon Communication’s (VZ) acquisition of Alltel. U.S. Cellular registered a net loss of 41,000 customers during the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter, U.S. Cellular’s cash balance reduced

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) today declared that its chipset inventory level is lower than usual contradicting its prior announcement that the CDMA mobile phone chipset giant is witnessing an inventory glut during the fourth quarter of calendar year 2010 (the first quarter of fiscal 2011 for the company). This announcement diminishes investors’ concern about overstocking of chips by smartphone developers and also indicates that Qualcomm can sell more chipsets during the upcoming holiday season. Qualcomm reaffirmed its previously given future financial outlook. First quarter of fiscal 2011 revenue will be within the range of $3.05 billion – $3.35 billion. Pro Forma EPS will be within the range of 63 cents – 67 cents, excluding 7 cents per share of stock-based compensation expenditures.
Oil drilling equipment maker Cameron International Corp. (CAM) reported third quarter 2010 earnings per share (excluding special items) of 64 cents, surpassing the prior-year quarter result of 58 cents and the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 60 cents. Considering the integration expense, associated with the NATCO Group acquisition and the litigation costs related to the Deepwater Horizon matter of 3 cents, earning per share in the quarter came at 61 cents, compared with 56 cents in the prior-year quarter. Cameron’s impressive earnings reflect a lower interest expense along with a strong order and backlog levels. The company generated total revenue of $1,527.1 million in the quarter, up 24% year over year, attributed to strong contributions from all the business units. However, the results failed to meet our expectation of $1,581 million.
