Mesa Airlines, a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group (MESA), announced yesterday that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, hoping to shed the financial obligations arising from leases on airplanes it no longer needs. Currently, the company has approximately 40% non functioning planes of its total fleet of 130. It hopes to shed 25 others that it does not need. The restructuring is expected to cut the extra fleets, thereby reducing operating cost. Earlier during May, Mesa said it may file for bankruptcy court protection if a contract dispute with Delta Air Lines (DAL), which accounted for approximately 11.0% of Mesa’s revenues, didn’t go its way. Delta claimed that Mesa failed to meet operational performance goals spelled out in their code sharing contract, because of which, it wanted to

Earlier this month, Aar Corp. (AIR) entered into a series of related transactions with Mesa Air Group, Inc. (MESA). AAR and Mesa amended their parts supply and maintenance agreements for Mesa’s CRJ-200 and ERJ-145 aircraft fleet to provide Mesa with increased flexibility to respond to demand fluctuations in the 50-seat aircraft market. In consideration for these amendments AAR will receive a cash payment from Mesa along with 15 million shares of Mesa’s common stock. AAR will return to Mesa $6.1 million aggregate principal amount at maturity of Mesa’s 2023 notes. AAR does not expect to increase its stock ownership in Mesa, and may sell down its position from time to time as market conditions permit. AAR has generated approximately $30 million in annual sales supporting Mesa’s CRJ-200 and ERJ-145 fleets.

There is a definite slowdown in AAR Corp’s. (NYSE: AIR) business as a result of the overall market forces and economic malaise, but all things being equal, the company still reported decent numbers after the market closed last night. As I wrote about previously, I wanted to see AAR’s results come in somewhat in-line, which they did, but see significant improvement in their cash flow generation and paying down some of their debt load, which did occur. So what does this mean for our investment? Is AAR still a good place to park our money even in the face of the continued economic storm? In this post I’ll be breaking down AAR’s full earnings release, as well as their analyst conference call, and round out my post with what you
