Symantec Corp. (SYMC) is scheduled to announce its second quarter fiscal 2011 results on October 27 after market close, and we do not see any variation in analyst estimates at this point. First Quarter Overview Symantec reported encouraging first quarter fiscal 2011 numbers, with earnings per share of 35 cents beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3 cents. Symantec reported first quarter revenue of $1.43 billion, flat with the year-earlier quarter, but above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.25 billion. However, after adjusting for currency translation, the quarter’s revenue grew 2.0% from the year-ago quarter. The sluggish performance is attributable to the cautious stance taken by the company’s IT customers. Symantec witnessed strength in its Consumer segment, which was offset by flat growth in Services segment and a decline in

Intel Corp., (INTC) which recently acquired security-software maker McAfee Inc. (MFE) in a $7.68 billion transaction, is believed to be nearing a deal to acquire the wireless business of Infineon Technologies. Infineon, a German semiconductor company, is known for its processors used in smartphones made by Apple Inc. (AAPL), Nokia (NOK), Research In Motion (RIMM) and Samsung Electronics. The increased focus on the emerging mobile device market is perhaps Intel’s way of pre-empting a weakness in PC sales. In mature markets such as the U.K. and the U.S. PC demand is witnessing a shift to mobile computing devices. The Infineon wireless business, for its part, helps Intel get chips into mobile phones — an area where Intel has yet to make a mark. Samsung Electronics and Broadcom Inc. Concerned that the economy would slide back into recession, investors chose to stay away from stocks and flew to the safety of government debt. The Dow industrials and the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index dropped on Friday but the Nasdaq managed to pull off a tepid advance. Absence of catalysts further eroded volume on Friday, which already has fallen to a record low this month. The Dow average fell 57 points, or nearly 0.6%, to close at 10213. The S&P 500 index dropped 0.4% to 1072. The Dow average has re-entered the negative territory for the year.
Intel Corp. (INTC) announced yesterday that it would be acquiring McAfee Inc. (MFE), one of the largest makers of security software for $7.68 billion ($6.8 billion net of cash acquired) in an all-cash transaction. The purchase price of $48 a share represents a 60% premium to McAfee’s closing price on Wednesday (after which the deal was announced). Shares surged 57% yesterday, dropping off .06% after hours. This is overall a very good deal for existing McAfee shareholders, so they are expected to approve. Of course, regulatory approval will also be required, which may not be a problem, considering the fact that security software is not a market in which Intel competes. Intel also announced that it would be retaining key management personnel and running McAfee as a separate unit, similar

McAfee Inc. (MFE) is one of the leading players in the information technology security industry. The company delivered decent second-quarter results, although revenue was below our expectation. The strong product portfolio, acquisitions, customer win momentum and decent cash generation ability are positives. On the other hand, we are a bit concerned about the intense competition that the company faces from small and large players, in the networking, consumer and OEM business, as well as from the hardware and software manufacturers entering the IT security business. This and the enhanced level of security offered by Windows 7 also pose some challenges to McAfee. We downgrade our rating on McAfee to Underperform. Zacks Investment Research

In a recent press release, McAfee Inc. (MFE) disclosed its 2010 Threat Predictions report. In this report the cyber security major stated that, it expects cybercriminals to target social networking sites and third-party applications and use more complex Trojans and botnets to build and execute attacks, and take advantage of HTML 5 to create emerging threats.
