(CLF) announced that it has resumed underground mining at its Oak Grove coal mine in Alabama but was not able to ship coal from the site because of damage to the above-ground facilities. Geopolitical issues also weighed down the markets as tensions in the Middle East intensified with reports of unrest in Saudi Arabia turning investors jittery in anticipation of a likely economic slowdown. Weekly jobless claims increased more than expected and the trade deficit reached its highest level in seven months to add to the gloom. Suggesting that market strength was on the decline, all three benchmarks dipped below their 50-day moving averages.
by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U’s Senior Analyst Wednesday, December 15, 2010: Issue #1408 The Chinese Zodiac says 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit. According to tradition, it’s supposed to be a period of relative calm and diplomacy, where people should opt for negotiation, rather than forcing an issue. It would be nice if that happened. But don’t expect it to occur in the stock market. I believe confrontation between executives and shareholders will take center stage in 2011, as activist investors increasingly get in the faces of underperforming management teams. But a little rumble here and there is good news for investors, as history has shown that this tactic ultimately drives the shares of those companies higher. And here’s where the scraps will occur in 2011… The Activist Investor

Massey Energy Co. (MEE) gave a new direction to the ongoing investigation to go into the cause of the April explosion at its Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia, which killed 29 miners. Massey’s management said that, as per new evidence gathered by company experts, the deadly explosion was caused by the sudden rush of natural gas probably from cracks in the mine’s floor, rather than a build-up of methane gas from unsafe coal mining and ventilation procedures. According to Massey, an analysis of gas emissions near the area where the explosion probably occurred shows that the chemical make-up was closer to natural gas from non-coal sources than the gas that comes from coal seams. The company is now seeking permission from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Tuesday, November 30, 2010 What’s dirty and out of fashion, but everybody wants it? That would be coal, both the coking kind used to make steel, and the thermal coal used to fire power plants. Over the past year or so, coal consumption has climbed on emerging market demand. To the industry’s surprise, it’s been enough to push global prices to a two-year high. The Wall Street Journal reports that China even worries it may run out of coal someday. So the government may cap domestic output to keep from running down the country’s reserves too quickly. Intent on meeting that demand, companies everywhere are busy merging and acquiring. In fact, just in the last few weeks, $15 billion in deals have been announced.

The outlook for the coal industry has revived materially from the weakness experienced in 2008 and 2009, driven by several powerful trends in the U.S. and Asia. Various recent economic indicators suggest that the U.S. economy regaining its stability, bringing about a rebound in various industries – the coal industry being one of them. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), coal production in 2009 fell by nearly 8.5% in response to lower U.S. coal consumption, fewer exports and higher coal inventories. Going forward, the EIA estimates a 0.3% decline in U.S. coal production in 2010, as drawdown in both producer and end-user inventories are expected to meet the increased coal consumption in 2010. However, coal production in 2011 is estimated to improve 1.8%. At the current rate of

Canyon Fuel Company, a subsidiary of Arch Coal Inc. (ACI), has resumed coal production at its Dugout Canyon Mine in Carbon County, Utah. The production has been restarted with all mining equipment Incorporatedluding the main long-wall mining system. Following the detection of a small increase in carbon monoxide levels, coal production at this mine was stopped on Apr 29, 2010. Dugout Canyon mine has 275 employees producing low-sulfur bituminous coal. During the first quarter of 2010, the mine’s production contributed 2% to Arch’s total production. The mine produced approximately 200,000 tons of low-sulfur bituminous coal per month in the first quarter of 2010. The mine’s closure for about a month will put the company under pressure to achieve its production target in the upcoming quarter. However, due to the restart

Massey Energy Company (MEE) has agreed to purchase Cumberland Resources Corporation and its affiliated companies for $960 million. Cumberland is one of the largest privately held coal producers in the United States, with 2009 revenue of $550 million generated from the production and sale of 7.8 million tons of high quality Central Appalachian coal. Approximately half of the 416 million tons of reserves of the company in Virginia and Kentucky can be used as metallurgical coal, a key ingredient in making steel. Massey will acquire Cumberland free of debt. Massey expects Cumberland to be a good fit for its strategy of capitalizing on growing Asian demand for higher-priced metallurgical coal. The company’s strategy centers on high-value metallurgical coal and demand in Asia, and the resulting supply shortages in South America

Massey Energy Co. (MEE) ? the largest coal company in Central Appalachia, Virginia – announced fourth-quarter earnings of 28 cents per share, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. In fiscal 2009, the company felt the impact of falling energy demand precipitated by a weak global economy. As part of its restructuring effort, the company re-negotiated supply contracts as well as slashed personnel costs through retrenchment and salary cuts. Massey Energy also focused its production efforts on lower-overhead mines and idling higher cost ones. Revenues in the reported quarter plunged 22.7% year over year to $583.9 million, reflecting lower demand from electric utilities and steelmakers. In addition, weather, weather-related power outages and disruption of rail and ocean transport significantly impacted Massey’s operations. Produced tons sold in the reported quarter totaled

Massey Energy Company (MEE) has fully acquired 15 million tons of coal reserves in West Virginia from rival Appalachian Fuels LLC, which went bankrupt recently, for over $6 million. Massey has also acquired permits needed to develop infrastructure and plans to begin production at the Dante Coal Reserves site. The transaction was completed on November 13, 2009. Massey secured rights to the reserves through an auction in the bankruptcy of Appalachian Fuels. The acquisition was announced last month and completed on Nov. 13. The company expects the value of the reserves to increase significantly as conditions in the metallurgical coal market improve. The acquisition is Massey’s second from Appalachian. In September, Massey bought 23 million tons of reserves and other assets in West Virginia’s Fayette County from Appalachian for $5.1

However, lower coal shipments and prices drove a 69% slump in earnings year over year. Revenues in the quarter plunged 6% year over year to $6.4 billion, reflecting a 15% drop in sales volumes and a 4% decline in prices. At more than $5.1 million, the assets include 23 million tons of coal reserves, permitted deep and surface mines, a permitted preparation plant and some mining equipment. These assets are located in Fayette County , West Virginia , close to Massey’s existing Mammoth and Nicholas Energy resource groups. Over half of the acquired reserves are metallurgical coal in the Powellton and Eagle Coal Seams. Massey plans to resume mining metallurgical coal in the Powellton Seam in the near term.
