It’s raining discounts at stores as retailers take their final lap before Christmas. Shoppers are offered discounts of 40%, 50% or even 60%. Further, buy one get one free comes as extra toppings. Apart from money offs, flexibility in shopping through smartphones and tablets, free shipping and 24-hour shopping facility from retailers like Macy’s Inc. (M) and Toys “R” Us are like icing on the cake. Moreover, Target Corporation (TGT), the operator of general merchandise and food discount stores in the United States, went one step ahead with the announcement of up to 50% discount on clothing and home decors after Christmas. Hence, the question that crop in our mind is that ‘Is everything fine with the retailers or are they offering discounts at the cost of margins?’ We believe

Macy’s Inc.’s (M) growth momentum continued throughout the year, and we believe it will sustain the tempo as it enters 2012. The company’s persistent effort to keep itself on the growth trajectory has paid off in an economy, whose turmoil seems to have no end. Initiatives Taken Macy’s sustained focus on price optimization, inventory management, merchandise planning and private label offering, positions it to drive traffic, meet customer-oriented demand and improve the shopping experience. In an attempt to increase sales, profitability and cash flows, the company has been taking steps such as integration of operations, consolidation of divisions as well as developing the e-commerce business and online order fulfillment centers. These include integration of operations, consolidation of divisions and customer-centric localization initiatives. To help drive traffic, Macy’s continues to focus on price optimization, inventory management and merchandise planning. These help the company to deliver better-than-expected third-quarter 2011 results. The quarterly earnings of $0.32 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.16, and portrayed a fourfold increase from $0.08 earned in the prior-year quarter. Following this management raised its outlook. Macy’s now expects fiscal 2011 earnings between $2.70 and $2.75 per share.
As the resistance to foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail gathers storm, the Indian government has decided to take the opposition head on. The government was virtually forced to put the ‘FDI in retail’ policy on hold within days of its announcement. The government has now decided to embark upon a campaign to convince all stakeholders, such as farmers, traders and shopkeepers about the benefits of the policy. This looks like a clever move to outsmart the continuing political opposition. Ever since the financial crisis in Europe deepened, the Indian rupee has faced a rapid depreciation. The currency lost as much as 16% in the last four months and close to 7% vis-à-vis the dollar between October-end and November-end.
Does the start of holiday sales suggest a break from the phase when US consumers were reeling under a series of macro-economic shocks? For now, the initial data released by National Retail Federation suggests that Santa has a bagful of gifts for the majority of retailers this holiday season. Early reports hinted that the retailers have won over prolonged macro-economic uncertainty. Shoppers shrugged off their economic woes to mark record holiday weekend sales of $52.4 billion. Supporting the view, data released by the Conference Board reveals that Consumer Confidence Index increased to 56.0 in November from 40.9 in October (its highest level since July, when the index reached 59.2). Further, data from the Commerce Department noted consumer spending to have recorded its fastest growth in third quarter 2011. The quarter

The asset swap was part of the respective corporate strategy to better align the portfolio with the other’s operating platform. The transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings of both the participating companies. In concurrence with the agreement, DDR sold Town Center Plaza – an open-air mall spanning 650,000 square feet in Kansas City, Kansas to Glimcher for $139 million. In exchange, Glimcher sold Polaris Towne Center – a 700,000 square-foot shopping center in Columbus, Ohio, to DDR for $80 million. It has invested $38.5 billion (or $3.50 per share) to buy 11 million newly issued shares of Martha Stewart Living and become a major stockholder and owning two seats in its board. The news was enough to encourage an upward movement in the shares of Martha Stewart that jumped 33.3% to close at $4.16 on Wednesday. However, the market reacted in a subdued manner

The Thanksgiving weekend brought record sales for retailers who went on to post better-than-expected November comparable-store sales and are now padding up for the holiday season. Does this indicate that the retail party has just begun? Early hours store openings, huge discounts, promotional activities and free shipping on online purchases were enough to lure customers on Black Friday that turned out to be a bonanza for both brick-and-mortar as well as e-commerce retailers. The data released by Swampscott, Massachusetts-based Retail Metrics, reveals that comparable-store sales of over 20 companies rose 3.2% beating the expectation of 3.1%. The data provider further added that 57% of retailers outpaced while 33% missed their expectations. Yes, there were retailers that stuck to old traditions and were not bold to think out of the box.

by Jeannette Di Louie, Investment U Research Monday, December 5, 2011 I’ve said for a while now that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) wants to take over the world. First, it debuted the search engine, which changed how we use the internet so significantly that English dictionaries everywhere now include “Google” [goo-guh'l] as an official entry (incidentally both as a noun and a verb). But the company didn’t stop there, adding Google News in 2002, Google Maps in 2004, Google Finance in 2006, Gmail in 2007, and its web browser, Google Chrome, in 2009. These days, it also offers music, video, image and finance services, not to mention Blogger, a popular site where users can create their own blogs for little or nothing, and Google Docs, which serves as a free, online

I’m a true American.” Well, not anymore. After being battered by the latest recession, Americans are gradually learning to live without debt, priming protection over growth. According to a report released by the New York Federal Reserve, U.S. consumers continued to free themselves of debt in the third quarter, showing a 0.6% sequential decline. The decline was primarily led by reduced mortgage balances. Consumer debt increased substantially during 2002–2008. In 2007, consumer debt had swollen to about 135% of disposable income. Since then, the level has been seeing a steady decline. It is a common perception that living without debt is just impossible, as our

The National Retail Federation (“NRF”), an industry trade group, projects a 2.8% growth in sales, amounting to $465.6 billion, during the current November to December holiday season, lower than the 5.2% rise in the corresponding period of the previous year. Online retail may increase 15% to touch $37.6 billion. These estimates reveal a rebound in consumer expenditure, which amounts to about 70% of the U.S. economy. Brick-and-mortar retailers ran extended hours post Thanksgiving in order to snatch some business from Internet retailers who continue to grow at a brisk pace. The growth trajectory of online sellers remains intact despite huge destruction of consumer wealth during the financial crisis in 2008 and tepid recovery since then. On the other hand, retail icons for middle-class shoppers, J. C. Penney Company (JCP) and

With Thanksgiving drawing to a close and Black Friday shopping gathering steam, this is clearly a retail weekend. Brick-and-mortar outlets, such as Target Corp (TGT), BestBuy Inc (BBY), Macy’s Inc. (M) and Kohl’s Corp (KSS) opened their stores at midnight yesterday, vying with each other to catch the first shoppers. Shoppers, too, have been lining up to bust the doors for the best of the selection and deals. While consumer dollars will no doubt pour in, this year is different from others. Mainly because a number of traditional retailers, such as Gap Inc. (GPS) and J.C. Penney Company (JCP) have not been doing so well and may not have promo offers available for long. Consumers on their part are also more cautious and have started comparing the offline shopping experience

Industry Rank Analysis 11-15-11 Before you know it, Christmas will be here. That is something that tends to bring retail front and center to the minds of investors. Rumors of the death of the U.S. consumer appear to be premature. Despite extremely low levels in the surveys of consumer confidence, people are still going out to shop. Personally I don’t like to rely on those surveys, because what people say to the poll takers is often very different from what they actually do. A wide variety of Retail industries are doing very well based on the Zacks Rank. In light of the second month in a row of surprisingly strong Retail Sales numbers, it looks like the retailers might continue to stay on top for a while. Also in the

On the economic front, we got better-than-expected weekly Jobless Claims numbers, raising hopes for a favorable showing from Friday’s non-farm payroll report. We also have a surprise interest rate cut from the European Central Bank, likely indicating a new monetary policy course for the central bank under Mario Draghi, who replaced Jean-Claude Trichet only three days ago. A little later, we get the September Factory Orders and the October ISM Service Sector Index reading. The big wait on the U.S. economic front now is for the Friday labor market report. However, some of the encouragement ebbed after analysts questioned the effectiveness of the plan. Nonetheless, investors remained optimistic and the markets logged their fourth-straight week of gains and looked en route to posting the best monthly gains in decades. In an uncharacteristic move, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained only 22 points or 0.2% to settle at 12,231.11. It has almost become a norm for the blue-chip index to post double-digit swings and this small movement reflected the pause investors have opted to take. Given a banking/housing/credit crisis that nearly melted down the economy, you would have thought that high-end luxury retailers like Tiffany & Co. (TIF) and Coach (COH) and upper-tier department stores like Nordstrom (JWN) and Macy’s (M) would have suffered the most. To the contrary, these were terrific investments as their earnings continued to surprise quarter after quarter. The consumer was not hunkering down in Wal-Mart (WMT) or Kohl’s (KSS). She was out shopping like nobody’s business. More on that surprising trend of the past two years in a moment. Now Comes the Recession? Well, the high-end may still do well, but it finally happened. Fears of a double-dip drove both shoppers and

The Cheesecake Factory Inc. (CAKE), which currently operates 168 restaurants, recently announced the opening of a new unit in San Mateo, California. This is the fifth of the company’s targeted 7 new openings for fiscal 2011. The other restaurants have already opened in Texas, New Jersey, Florida and Connecticut. The newly opened restaurant spans approximately 8,500 square feet and accommodates around 251 guests. It is located in the Hillsdale Shopping Center, which hosts over 130 stores and is anchored by three department stores (Nordstrom Inc. (JWN), Macy’s Inc (M) and Sears). We expect the restaurant to benefit immensely from its strategic positioning. We also expect a great variety of menu offering at the new unit to attract guests. This was the first time since early July that the Dow and the S&P 500 registered two consecutive days of gains. However, the magnitude of losses that the benchmarks had suffered could not be entirely washed out and all the benchmarks were down less than 2% for the week. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) recorded its fifth-straight day of triple-digit movement for the first time since January last year. The Dow was up 125 points or 1.1% to close the day at 11,269.02. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) gained 0.5% and settled at 1,178.81. We remain optimistic about the company’s customer-centric localization initiative called ‘My Macy’s.’ The program aims at improving comparable-store sales and reducing operating expenses, with stores and merchandise assortments focusing on local customer needs and preferences. These help the company to deliver better-than-expected second-quarter 2011 results on the heels of healthy sales, improved operating margin and effective cost management.
A Glimpse at Fiscal 2010 Fiscal 2010 for retailers was a year of continuous process of streamlining and assimilating internal processes. With this priority in mind, retailers concentrated more on aligning inventories, improving efficiencies and spending on technology, which led them to enter fiscal 2011 with a more optimistic outlook. The Challenges and Opportunities of 2011 The retail industry is well positioned to face another year of challenges and utilize to the fullest the opportunities made available by the economic recovery, even as the quality and pace of the recovery has left much to be desired. Despite continued problems, consumers are slowly gaining confidence in the market and increasing their spending power, which is helping retail sales show signs of recovery. We now know that the manufacturing and service sectors lost ground as they entered the third quarter. We will have the full picture of the economy in July after Friday’s non-farm payroll report. This morning’s weekly Jobless Claims report gives us a flavor of what is going on in the labor market. The market will also be digesting developments in Europe, where the European Central Bank (ECB) left interest rates unchanged. The market’s focus has clearly shifted to Italy and Spain as these two countries struggle with their weak finances. On the U.S. labor market front, weekly Jobless Claims came a tad better than expected

Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.
