This morning’s economic data is giving investors the clearest possible evidence of divergence in global economic growth outlook, with the U.S. economy decoupling from Europe and China. We have another better-than-expected read on Initial Jobless Claims in the U.S., while readings of the manufacturing sector in China and Europe show contraction. The surprise factor in the European slowdown is limited since that region is widely believed to be already in a recession, but I suspect that today’s soft Chinese manufacturing data will remain front and center and trump the favorable domestic labor market report. The preliminary Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for March created by HSBC Bank (HBC) shows a slippage from last month’s level. The index dropped to 48.1 in March from February’s 49.6, both below the critical 50 level

Does the start of holiday sales suggest a break from the phase when US consumers were reeling under a series of macro-economic shocks? For now, the initial data released by National Retail Federation suggests that Santa has a bagful of gifts for the majority of retailers this holiday season. Early reports hinted that the retailers have won over prolonged macro-economic uncertainty. Shoppers shrugged off their economic woes to mark record holiday weekend sales of $52.4 billion. Supporting the view, data released by the Conference Board reveals that Consumer Confidence Index increased to 56.0 in November from 40.9 in October (its highest level since July, when the index reached 59.2). Further, data from the Commerce Department noted consumer spending to have recorded its fastest growth in third quarter 2011. The quarter

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, November 9, 2011: Issue #1639 I just got back from my annual physical. Fortunately, everything was fine. But my experience solidified my belief that one of the major healthcare trends that will emerge is the concept of personalized medicine. I had been going to the same doctor every year since 2003. He’s a good guy and has helped me when I’ve been sick. But when I went for my physical every year, he’d tell me to watch my cholesterol, turn my head and cough, and that was pretty much the end of it. This year, I changed doctors. The practice I go to takes a more holistic approach. No, they’re not burning incense and the place doesn’t smell like patchouli. They’re still

On Thursday, I wrote a piece titled “The Seven ‘C’s’ of Recovery Optimism” with my last, and possibly weakest, point for the continuing economic expansion being the resiliency of the American consumer. Today, I will highlight where the strong consumer is spending her money and how that’s driving the earnings and stock prices of several top companies. First, a few points about where I got this wrong and where I got it right in the last two years. This is what I said yesterday about my previously cynical view of the consumer’s ability to recover from the credit crisis: “Here was one I got way wrong in 2009 and 2010. I thought the American consumer would be slow to spend again as she reconstituted her balance sheet and her debt.

In the paragraphs that follow, we cover the recent earnings announcement, subsequent analysts’ estimate revisions as well as the Zacks Rank and long-term recommendation on the stock. Earnings Review Lululemon reported robust first-quarter 2011 adjusted earnings of 44 cents a share, up 63.0% from the year-ago figure of 27 cents, handily beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 38 cents.
