We expect Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) to beat expectations when it reports first quarter 2013 results on Apr 24. Why a Likely Positive Surprise? Our proven model shows that Northrop Grumman is likely to beat earnings because it has the right combination of two key ingredients. Positive Zacks ESP: Expected Surprise Prediction or ESP, which represents the difference between the Most Accurate estimate and the Zacks Consensus Estimate, is at +1.16%. This is a leading indicator of a likely positive earnings surprise for shares. Zacks #3 Rank (Neutral): Note that stocks with Zacks Ranks of #1, #2 and #3 have a significantly higher chance of beating earnings.
Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) has entered into an agreement with Reignwood Group to develop an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) pilot power plant located off the coast of southern China. Per the agreement, this offshore plant with an electric generation capacity of 10 megawatt (MW) will be designed by Lockheed Martin. The plant will supply all the power required by a green resort being built by Reignwood Group. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is a process that can produce electricity by using the temperature difference between deep cold ocean water and warm tropical surface waters. This technology is best suited for island and coastal communities where energy transportation costs for other sources of power are very expensive. Like other renewables, namely, solar and wind, OTEC plants provide clean and sustainable energy.

Raytheon Company (RTN) has decided to reorganize its business through segment realignment, announcement of key executive roles and job cuts. The restructuring would aim to streamline operations, increase productivity and achieve stronger alignment with customers’ preferences. The restructuring will be effective from Apr 1, 2013. Currently, Raytheon’s operations are classified into six business segments: Integrated Defense Systems (IDS), Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS), Missile Systems (MS), Network Centric Systems (NCS), Space and Airborne Systems (SAS), and Technical Services (TS). However, post re-alignment, this number will come down to four. Intelligence and Information Systems and Raytheon Technical Services businesses will combine to form a new segment called Intelligence, Information and Services. Parts of the Network Centric Systems business will be added to Integrated Defense Systems, Missile Systems, Space and Airborne Systems

Diversified business conglomerate United Technologies Corp. (UTX) recently announced that it has sold the pump and engine control systems business of the erstwhile Goodrich Corporation to Triumph Group, Inc. (TGI) for an undisclosed amount. The asset sale is part of the mandatory requirements set by the regulatory authorities relating to the acquisition of Goodrich by United Technologies. Going forward, United Technologies is also expected to dispense with the electric power business of Goodrich subject to a clearance by the regulatory authorities and adherence to the usual closing conditions. Earlier, on Jul 26, 2012, United Technologies acquired Goodrich for $16.5 billion and combined it with the legacy Hamilton Sundstrand division to form a new operating segment named UTC Aerospace Systems.
General Dynamics Corporation’s (GD) marine business wing Bath Iron Works clinched an $18.0 million contract for the modification of the first DDG-1000 Zumwalt class guided missile destroyer. The production of the first next generation DDG-1000 class destroyer is slated to be completed in 2015. The contract is an extension of the original $3.1 billion maintenance and support deal that the company received in 2008. The contract will enable General Dynamics to continue lending its expertise and resources for supporting the building and maintenance of the vessel. The complex body design of the Zumwalt destroyers present challenges which the company needs to study and incorporate in their technological capabilities thereby making the process easier for General Dynamics to construct the next set of destroyers. The cost of the airplanes will be $1.9 billion at current list prices. SWISS is a part of the Lufthansa Group. The 777 -300 ER model is preferred by airline operators due to its capability to fly long distances with more than 350 passengers. This aircraft is 18%-20% more fuel efficient than other rival models in this range. The spacious interiors of the airplanes increase the comfort level of the passengers. The maximum flying range of the aircraft is 7,825 nautical miles (14,490 km). These very features would help SWISS to retain its competitive edge over other airliners which operate airplanes with more than

The Boeing Company (BA) has received an order worth $1 billion from Cathay Pacific Airways for three 747-8 Freighter airplanes. The order also includes options for five additional 777 Freighters. Besides strengthening its position as a market leader in the air cargo business, Cathay Pacific Airways seems to be renewing its freighter fleet with newer, more efficient airplanes. Cathay Pacific currently operates six 747-400 Freighters, eight 747-8 Freighters, six 747-400ER Freighters and one 747-400 BCF. The new 747-8 Freighters fleet will gradually replace the older fleet. The Boeing 747-8 is a wide-body jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the fourth-generation Boeing 747 version, with lengthened fuselage, redesigned wings, and improved efficiency. The 747-8 has two main variants: the 747-8 Intercontinental (747-8I) for passengers and the 747-8 Freighter

On Feb 4, 2013, we downgraded defense and aerospace operator, General Dynamics Corporation (GD) to Underperform based on the company’s dismal fourth quarter and full year 2012 financial results. The company currently has a short-term Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). Why the Downgrade? General Dynamics recently reported lackluster 2012 results. The company posted fourth quarter 2012 earnings of $1.39 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.90 per share. Reported quarter revenue of $8.08 billion failed to meet the Zacks Consensus Estimate by $731 million. The downside reflects huge charges at its information systems business and a revenue decline at European Land Systems. Currently, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2013 is $1.61, an estimated decline of 5.29% year over year. Cause for Concern The company’s Gulfstream business is facing

The fourth quarter reporting season gets into high gear this week, with 253 companies coming out with quarterly results, including 83 S&P 500 companies. The earnings season thus far has been relatively uneventful, but we will have a better idea by the end of this week; by then we will have seen 30% of the total fourth quarter reports. While last week was all about banks, the focus this week is on the Technology sector, particularly Apple (AAPL) which reports after the close on Wednesday. The iPhone maker has lost some of its sizzle lately and is expected to see earnings decline from the same period last year. No company grows forever, but it may be premature to write Apple off. Other major Tech companies reporting results this week include

(AIR), one of the leading suppliers of aftermarket products and services to the global aerospace/aviation industry.
Last week, Embraer S.A. (ERJ), the largest Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, made a delivery of its EMBRAER 175 jet to Belavia, the 100% state-owned flag-carrier of Belarus. The aircraft delivered is leased from Air Lease Corporation of Los Angeles and will fly on European routes from Minsk International airport in Belarus. The aircraft manufacturer is still due to delivery another E175 jet to Belavia by the end of this year. E175 jet supports 12 business class and 64 economy class seats. Embraer over time has been growing its presence in major parts of the world, especially Europe and Asia. Belavia is the company’s ninth customer in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Leading commercial airplane producer, The Boeing Co. (BA) received a firm order of 25 airplanes from Avolon. The order includes 10’ 737 MAX 8s, 5’ 737 MAX 9s and 10’ Next-Generation 737-800s. The total value of the order at list prices is pegged at $2.4 billion. The airline leasing company Avolon initially made a commitment to Boeing at the Farnborough Airshow in July about the 737 aircraft and this order is a finalization of that commitment. The Farnborough Air show was a happy hunting ground for Boeing as the company was able to secure a few multi-billion dollar order commitments for its 737 model. The Boeing 737 MAX sees brisk demand in the single-aisle market for its fuel efficiency and low carbon dioxide emissions. Powered by the Commercial Fan Motor

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) posted mixed results for the December quarter surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate on the bottom line but missing the consensus at the top. Looking forward, the company offers a strong program portfolio positioned to take advantage of focus areas in the defense space, an improving balance sheet and an ongoing share repurchase program. Northrop Grumman is the fourth largest U.S. defense contractor behind The Boeing Company (BA); Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT); and
