The rumors about American Airlines, a subsidiary of AMR Corp. (AMR), merging with another airline have been heating up since the company filed for bankruptcy protection in November last year. Finally, the market buzz appears to be coming true with the three labor unions of American Airlines supporting a plan for the bankrupt carrier’s merger with rival US Airways Group Inc. (LCC), the fifth largest U.S. airline. This move represents a first step toward a consolidation, though creditors, directors, and management are yet to give their green signal. The three unions – Allied Pilots Association, Association of Professional Flight Attendants and Transport Workers Union – represent as many as 55,000 employees at American Airlines. According to them, the merger would save about 6,200 jobs as opposed to what AMR Corp.

Despite the fact that air carriers are losing money due to persistent market turmoil and surging fuel prices, we believe airline stocks are offering attractive returns and are the best bets at this point in time. The airline industry is consolidating in order to regain lost profits and improve operational efficiency. Further, the carriers are cutting capacities and taking several steps to lower their overall costs including fuel and non-fuel. The wild card is fuel prices, largely a function of geostrategic forces, which are outside of the control of the airlines. We expect crude oil and jet fuel prices to remain largely stable this year, but forecasting this key variable with any level of accuracy has always been extremely challenging. While air carriers are contemplating a more effective and enduring

The airline industry is likely to see another major consolidation. American Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation, is looking for a suitable partner to merge with. In this regard, Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL), US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) and private equity firm TPG are mulling bids to acquire American Airlines. American Airlines is the largest carrier to have filed for bankruptcy protection, which it did in November last year, and is currently in the midst of restructuring its debt and cutting labor costs. Looking back, bankruptcies in the airline industry have paved the way for mergers and acquisitions. This is because carriers seek protection to emerge as a low cost provider with a strong competitive position in the industry. Though the details are not fully available, let

Stocks will find it difficult to sustain their upward drift of recent days in the face of lackluster results from banking bellwether JP Morgan (JPM) and the absence of anything meaningful on the economic calendar. This morning’s bigger-than-expected November Trade Deficit number, though not a market-moving release, adds to the negative headlines. An outsized gain in the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, on deck for release a little later, could potentially help lift sentiment. But the overall tone of today’s trading action will likely remain subdued given investors’ evaluation of the fourth quarter reporting season in light of the JP Morgan news. The headlines from across the pond remain non-threatening for another day, though overnight deposits at the European Central Bank (ECB) have hit another new all-time high. Banks have been

The airline industry was hit hard in 2011, by the unrelenting market turmoil and rising fuel costs after a strong rebound in 2010. Major carriers experienced declining year-over-year earnings and revenues. Unfortunately, we foresee a similar scenario in 2012. Conditions could worsen in 2012, stemming from the weak outlook for Europe given its financial problems. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines are expected to generate overall profits of $3.5 billion in 2012, down from the estimated $6.9 billion in 2011 and $16 billion in 2010. This steep decline in the industry’s profitability is a function of the overall unfavorable macro backdrop in which the industry has to operate this year. Regional Forecast North America: North American airlines like United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL),

The airline industry needs to figure out ways to counter rising fuel expenses, which is estimated at $178 billion for this year and $198 billion for the next. Fuel will account for 30% of industry costs compared with 13% a decade ago. Despite higher ticket prices and improved ancillary revenues, air carriers have been struggling with rising fuel prices for the past several months. In order to alleviate the pressure, the carriers have been passing on the increased cost to customers in the form of fare hikes, which are helping these stocks to be profitable. Airlines have imposed about 10 broad fare increases this year but some refused to raise ticket prices. Air carriers are also focusing on cutting capacities and streamlining their costs by reducing non-fuel expenses. Airline traffic

Previously, in September, the Association had forecast profits of $4.9 billion. Tougher conditions will likely stem from the government’s failure to find any resolution to the Euro-zone sovereign debt crisis that has dwarfed economic growth. The problems in Europe are swelling and spilling over to the rest of the world. In the worst case, if the Euro-zone crisis shapes into a recession, the global airline industry would incur a loss of $8 billion – the worst since the 2008 financial crisis. A downward revision was also made to the sector’s revenue. The Association now expects revenue to grow 3.7% to $618 billion next year, down

Another airline consolidation is seemingly in the wind. Chances of American Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation (AMR) merging with US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) seem high. Both companies are struggling to remain competitive amid steeply rising fuel prices and a weak travel demand environment. US Airways, the fifth largest U.S. airline, has long-standing problems with its pilot union. Troubles at American Airlines have also intensified due to high labor costs and a debt-heavy balance sheet. The story is equally bleak at AMR Corp. The company’s shares lost more than three-fourths of their value this year. Yesterday, it plummeted 84% in the last trade. American Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection, which would help it to cut down expenses and position it for consolidation. Looking back, bankruptcies in the

The quarter’s results beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 13 cents but remained below the year-ago earnings of 26 cents mainly due to the negative impacts of fuel hedging, which suffered losses following the drop in fuel price. Adjusted earnings in the third quarter excluded approximately $262 million of unfavorable special items, primarily related to impacts of fuel contracts as well as the acquisition and integration costs of AirTran. Otherwise, the company reported loss per share of 18 cents as against a profit of 27 cents in the year-ago period. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

After four consecutive days of heavy sell-offs, markets edged up modestly on Friday, bringing to a close one of their worst weeks in almost three years. Mounting fear and anxiety over Europe’s debt crisis coupled with the Federal Reserve’s gloomy forecast about the US economy had driven the markets down throughout the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up 37.65 points to close at 10,771.48 while the Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) index gained 0.6% to finish at 1,136.40. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 1.1% to close at 2,483.23. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) continued its uptrend into the fifth-straight day, increasing 0.6%.
The largest U.S. low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines (LUV) plans to keep next year’s capacity relatively flat with the 2011 level. The company might not increase flights even in 2013. The decision was based on surging fuel prices and economic weakness. Given steep rises in fuel prices, the company is taking cautious steps to counter weaker demand, softness in corporate travel trends and lower bookings due to high unemployment and the recent topsy-turvy in financial markets. Although Southwest has implemented eight fare increases since last December in response of fuel price inflation, it is now cutting capacity to handle sluggish demand. Southwest will trim its domestic flights next year but increase international voyages. The purchase of AirTran, earlier this year, boosted its flying capacity by 25%.
Southwest Airlines (LUV) is mulling over raising airfares for fall-winter season travel. After the losses post Hurricane Irene, the airline industry is looking at potential benefits fromhigher travel demand during the holidays and Southwest Airlines is no exception. During late summer, the carrier had offered a limited period sale on fall-winter travel from September 8 to November17. Now, looking at the holiday demand trend, the company has increased fares for business travelers. We see the price hike as a good augury for Southwest Airlines, particularly after a weak first half. Southwest Airlines faced a serious setback in its first and second quarters due to staggering operating costs given skyrocketing fuel prices. In addition, Hurricane Irene had fueled negative sentiments for the company. The company quickly resorted to fare hikes and capacity

After tropical storm Irene hit the East coast, major airline companies were forced to cancel approximately 9500 flight, completely halting operations at the busiest airports in the U.S. including the New York Airport . However, airline companies are seeking to reschedule flights as the hurricane is expected to exit the region by Monday. Consequently, carriers like United and Continental Airlines, subsidiaries of United Continental Holdings, Inc. (UAL) announced their plan of resuming flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport on Monday, August 29. Other airlines that conduct regular flights from these airports are Delta Air Lines (DAL), US Airways (LCC), and American Airlines (AMR) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU). The catastrophic Irene created a huge dent in the airline industry, which is already struggling

One of the leading low cost carriers, Southwest Airlines Co.’s (LUV) board of directors has announced a share repurchase authorization of $500 million. In 2008, the company repurchased 4.4 million shares for approximately $54 million under a $500 million program announced that same year. However, given weak market conditions, management had suspended the buyback plan. The company has now regained its repurchase authorization, highlighting its strong cash flow position and short-term investments of approximately $4.4 billion. Further, the company is banking upon rising synergies from the AirTran merger, which will likely remain accretive to earnings in 2011. However, Southwest Airlines recently announced lower-than-expected its second quarter earnings which remained lower than expected. The company’s adjusted earnings dropped deteriorated from its year-ago performance, reflecting its failure to counter sky-high fuel expenses

With respect to earnings surprise, over the trailing four quarters, Southwest Airlines has outperformed the Zacks Consensus Estimate for all the four consecutive quarters with average positive surprises of 7.77%. We expect the airline to report strong revenue growth and achieve solid cost control in 2011 as it continues to explore and plan for revenue-producing opportunities going forward, thereby increasing earnings for the company. That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

We are maintaining our long-term Neutral recommendation on the largest U.S. low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines (LUV) following its first quarter 2011 results. The stock retains the Zacks # 3 Rank (Hold). Southwest Airlines delivered strong results in terms of revenue and traffic growth that largely compensated higher fuel expenses. First quarter earnings were in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate as well as the year-ago numbers. The drop in demand caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan on March 11 has affected the whole airline industry. Since Southwest Airlines currently operates on domestic routes, it did not have to bear the brunt. However, the surging fuel prices took a toll on the company’s profitability in the recently reported quarter. Southwest is trying to combat rising fuel prices with

The largest U.S. low-cost carrier, Southwest Airlines (LUV) finally completed its $1.4 billion merger of AirTran Holdings Inc, following all regulatory clearances. The merger represents a unique opportunity for Southwest Airlines to expand its presence in key markets. The combination of the two low-cost carriers represents the third major U.S. airline merger in the last three years. Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) acquired Northwest in 2008 and United Airlines acquired Continental Airlines in 2010, resulting in a new entity United Continental Holdings (UAL). Southwest gained a valuable market presence in Atlanta, the busiest airport in the U.S., post merger. The acquisition will widen Southwest’s network by 25% and provides its first international destination in the Caribbean and Mexico. The company will expand its presence in key U.S. markets such as

Jet fuel prices rose over 53% as oil price increased to above $100 per barrel given the ongoing civil unrest in the Middle East. Despite the sharp rise in fuel prices, airline traffic picked up significantly in February attributable to a strong revival in the economy. The month also saw improved performances on the heels of increased air fares and higher revenues collected from extra fees. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles (RPM), which means one mile flown by one passenger. The carriers are benefiting from strong travel demand, industry consolidation, substantial improvement in yields and better capacity management, which resulted in enhanced supply-demand conditions. Further, it is estimated that U.S. carriers will be able to combat 65–70% of the increase in energy costs with higher

Top players in the U.S. airlines industry reported a steep decline of approximately 50% in their domestic fares following a $20 price jump that was announced in February 2011. Larger carriers faced competitive pressure that led them to reduce their increase to as low as $10.00. The discounted carriers limited their price hikes to approximately 50% of the large carriers, which forced the latter to trim their increases to the same levels so as to avert any pricing disparities. Giant carriers such as American Airlines, subsidiary of AMR Corporation (AMR), Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) and US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) initiated a $20 roundtrip fare hike. United Airlines, a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings (UAL) followed suit, with a sky-high $60 hike in business class. This marked the fifth

The U.S. airline industry is on track for a profitable year after a drought of two years. Airline traffic in 2010 has shown an improvement with a surge in business travel and premium service demand from the year-ago levels. We expect demand for air travel to continue showing signs of improvement, thereby making airlines profitable in 2011. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles (RPM), which is the revenue generated for every mile a passenger travels. Unit revenue and capacity rose for major U.S. air carriers in the month of November. United Continental Holdings Inc.
by Martin Denholm, Investment U’s Senior Editor Thursday, October 21, 2010 I’m currently looking for a flight back home to England over Christmas. Now, I know it’s the holiday season and all – and one of the busiest travel periods – but given what some airlines are charging, I’m not surprised they’re raking in the profits. In a dramatic reversal from some of the awful news from the airline industry over the past few years, several American carriers now have a serious financial tailwind behind them. Take Delta (NYSE: DAL), for example – now the world’s second-largest airline, having swallowed up Northwest Airlines a couple of years ago. The firm reported a $363 million third-quarter profit – a massive jump over the $161 million loss the airline recorded in Q3

The U.S. airline industry is on track for a profitable year after a long drought. Currently, airlines are benefiting from the rebound in traffic Incorporatedluding an increase in business travel and premium service demand. With signs of sustained economic growth, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has more than tripled its full-year 2010 profit outlook to $8.9 billion for the overall industry compared with the earlier outlook of $2.5 billion. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles (RPM), which is the revenue generated for every mile a passenger flies. Unit revenue and capacity rose for most of the airlines in the month of September. United Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Continental Holdings Inc. (AAI) for $1.4 billion. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of next year and will be fully operational by 2012. The total transaction value is approximately $3.4 billion Incorporatedluding AirTran’s debt and capitalized aircraft-operating leases. AirTran shareholders will receive $3.75 in cash and 0.321 Southwest share for each share of AirTran, whereas Southwest will pay about $670 million in cash and will assume $2 billion in AirTran debt. The agreement conforms with the consolidation trend in the airline industry. This pending merger would be the third in the last two years following the oil price hike in 2008 and economic downturn in 2009. The trend was initiated with the first merger between Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Northwest in 2008. The second is the ongoing acquisition of Continental Airlines (CAL) by United Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of UAL Corp. (UAUA), scheduled for completion on October 1, 2010. United Airlines received the antitrust approval by the U.S. Department of Justice to acquire Continental Airlines.
The recovery in the global economy is expected to benefit the airline industry with unit revenues slated to rise in the second quarter of 2010. Rising fares, an improvement in international traffic and an overall recovery is expected to drive this growth. Last year’s economic downturn and the preceding year’s steep oil prices had adversely affected the airline industry. We believe that this news will have a positive impact on share price movements of airline companies in the near future. Despite concerns about the recent rise in fuel prices, recovery in business travel and cargo has accelerated along with gains in international and domestic passenger revenue. Moreover, airline capacity is also expected to improve in 2010. Among all the major U.S. airlines, second-quarter 2010 unit revenue of Delta Air Lines (DAL), the

We believe the company’s strong balance sheet, low costs, several revenue initiatives, network optimization and hedging strategy make for a compelling investment opportunity. NMB coordinates labor relations with airlines and rail companies under the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Airlines and railroads employ more than 500,000 workers, and about two-thirds of those are already in unions, which is much higher than the overall union membership rate of 12%. Under the new rule, union organization would be decided on the number of votes cast. The previous 76-year-old rule required a majority of an entire work group to approve unionization, effectively counting those who do not vote as “no” votes.
For the airline sector, consolidation is in the air. And with good reason too. Last year, the industry lost $9.4 billion. This year, the International Air Transport Association expects it to lose another $2.8 billion. On the positive side, that makes buying up rivals very cheap. That’s a good thing, considering that no-frills companies like Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) are adding customers, thanks to the recession. The higher-end competition needs to make a profit somehow. Airlines on both sides of the Atlantic leapt at the chance to conduct mergers. Over in Europe, British Airways ADR (OTC: BAIRY) and Iberia announced potential plans last November. And they just recently reached an agreement on the tie-up, which will create the third-largest airline in Europe. Meanwhile UAL Corporation (Nasdaq: UAUA) – a.k.a United
