We will have representation from the who’s who of the corporate world, with a number of bellwether players on tap to come out with results. While earnings will remain the primary focus during the week, we have a number of market-moving economic releases on deck as well. We will get a sense of the consumer economy though the monthly Retail Sales numbers, while the Industrial Production report will give us a good read on the manufacturing sector.
Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

by Jason Jenkins, Investment U Research Thursday, October 6, 2011 What do you do in a bear market? Most people would tell you to run and get out. Thousands of investors are flocking to the perceived safety of Treasury bonds. But as Alexander Green writes, the Treasury bond market is a calamity waiting to happen. And if you invest in short-term Treasury notes, you may as well stuff all your cash in the mattress, because you’ll get the same return. What those who had success in the market know is that you don’t make money following the herd. You find opportunities. As strange as it may seem, geopolitical dysfunction in the United States and Europe may just provide that opportune moment. Opportunities Exist Despite U.S. and EU Recession Fears Last

We reaffirm our Neutral recommendation for The Coca-Cola Co. (KO) following the second quarter 2011 earnings of $1.17 per share, which exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. It also exceeded the prior-year quarter earnings of $1.06 and were ahead of the company’s long-term growth target. In both the current and the prior-year quarters, Coca-Cola was impacted by restructuring charges and costs related to global productivity initiatives as well as the acquisition of the North American operations of bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc (CCE) in the third quarter of 2010. The North American segment was one of the largest contributors, accounting for over 30% to total revenue. However, it delivered sluggish volume trends for almost two years. Since the third quarter of 2010, it has started reporting positive volume growth,

Commodity shares dragged down indices as energy and raw materials lost their sheen after a steep drop in their prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped 1.6% to settle at 11,010.90. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was down 2.1% and finished the day at 1,151.06. The Nasdaq Composite Index slid 2.2% and closed at 2,491.58.
Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) is planning an extensive restructuring, as announced by its chief executive officer (CEO) Leo Apotheker. In order to focus more on the high-growth and high-margin business, the CEO now wants to spin off or sell H-P’s lower-margin PC business, wash its hands of the webOS business (still looking for a take-off) and buy out business software maker Autonomy Corp. The focus shift would help H-P evolve as a software and services company, without any reliance on the hardware businesses. Goodbye to PSG Segment Although HP has maintained its leadership position in worldwide PC shipments for many years, margins in the Personal Systems Group have lagged other areas of its business. The segment generated single-digit margin growth in the last few quarters, less than any of the other

The Dow Jones Industrial Average see-sawed between positive and negative territory, while the markets finished mixed on Friday amid global economic concerns. Encouraging economic reports helped the markets prevent another heavy slide on the closing day of the week, but they were not strong enough to wash out the huge losses suffered through the week as the benchmarks ended their worst week in almost two years. The Dow closed with modest gains at 11,444.61, up 0.5%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) declined marginally, by 0.06% to settle at 1,199.38. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index shed 0.9% and closed the day at 2,532.41. In what was the worst week for markets in more than two years, the Dow, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq plunged 5.8%, 7.2% and 8.1%, respectively.

Uncertainty over economic growth kept investors jittery, though the benchmarks escaped recording their longest losing streak since Jimmy Carter’s days in the White House. Traders believe the rebound was partially led by former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Donald Kohn’s comments about the Fed considering a new stimulus plan, which brought the buyers into the market. As the day began, investors were once again bogged down by concerns about the economy and the markets opened with steep losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dipped 166 points before recouping its losses to settle at 11,896.21, up 0.3%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) added 0.5% to finish

The political deadlock in Washington weighed down the markets on the opening day of the week, as lawmakers struggled to find a solution to the impasse over the debt-ceiling issue. The day was also marked by disappointing corporate results, and the fear-gauge index posted its biggest percentage jump in two weeks, reflecting heightened investor anxiety. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) plunged 145 points in intra-day trade before recouping losses partially and finally settled at 12,592.80, dropping 88 points or 0.7%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) shed 0.6% to close the day at 1,337.43. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 0.6% and signed off at 2,842.80. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Pepsi to meet this goal wants to go back to its roots and promote its flagship product Pepsi Cola once again. Citicorp (C), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and Bank of America Corp. The new credit facility will replace the company’s prior 364-days unsecured revolving credit facility of $2,575.0 million, entered on June 16, 2010. Investors refrained from betting big ahead of the crucial jobs report from the Labor Department, which will likely add to concerns about a slowing economy. Markets had initially garnered some gains, but these were soon washed out as investors remained worried about the jobs report.
Yes, in an effort to alleviate the huge debt burden, President Barack Obama is mulling to sell more than 14,000 unnecessary federal constructions. According to an administrative official, Obama wants to create an independent panel that will review and recommend how the federal government can sell off its superfluous real estate or consolidate thousands of not-so-used constructions to save billions in taxpayer funds, the Associated Press reported last week. Though selling government property has flared up controversy in recent years, what else could the government do to rid itself of a debt pile? At least it’s better to save taxpayers’ hard-earned money than keeping surplus — though time-honored — government properties for charity. We do agree with one of the controversies that selling government property will never solve the debt

By Steve McDonald, Investment U Analyst Thursday, March 10, 2011 Warren Buffett’s annual letter to his Berkshire Hathaway shareholders (released on February 26) has some very interesting information and tips that I think you can use… What Cash Says About Value: Buffett has $38 billion dollars in cash – the largest cash position he’s ever held. He says he’s looking for a big acquisition, but that much cash may say more about how he sees current valuation in the stock market. Value, Value, Value: Despite Buffett’s huge cash position, many of his favorite holdings are at or below what he paid for them. If you know anything about the Oracle of Omaha, he only buys companies he thinks are undervalued. So if you buy into his value thinking, the following

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day up 6.74 points at 12,239.8. The Dow closed higher for the eighth consecutive session. The S&P 500 lost 0.28% to close at 1,320.88. Consequently, we downgrade the stock to Underperform from Neutral. Plexus is a leading provider of electronic manufacturing services (EMS) to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in a wide range of industries, including wireline/networking, wireless infrastructure, industrial/commercial, defense/security/aerospace, and medical. First Quarter Highlights Plexus Corp. reported mixed first quarter 2011 results.
What impact should Egypt have on your investing decisions? The answer is not much, unless you believe you have particularly good insight into Middle East affairs. My rationale is that Egypt accounts for a small portion of the world economy and, more importantly, that the events unfolding are unpredictable. Egypt’s economy generated about $200 billion in 2010, a small enough size not to disrupt global growth. It is also small enough not to account for a significant position in most international funds. For example, the country comprises just 9.3% of T. Rowe Price’s Africa & Middle East Fund (TRAMX). The only way to get direct exposure is to specifically seek it out by investing in a fund like Market Vectors Egypt Index ETF (EGPT). I will have more to say

Now, many are finally putting it to work. But they’re not hiring more workers, building more factories, or paying down debt. Instead, they’re using the money to buy back their own shares. So far this year, companies have announced that they’ll purchase more than $273 billion of their own shares. That’s more than five times as much as last year, according to Birinyi Associates. Some economists argue that this money could be better put to work in job-generating activities that might produce economic growth. However, management’s first obligation is to shareholders, not economists or “the public.” And if your

by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Thursday, October 28, 2010 Expect the 2010 U.S. census to show profound changes to the “typical” U.S. consumer. According to the Brookings Institution, 83% of U.S. population growth in the last ten years came from ethnic minority groups. Together, their purchasing power rose by $1 trillion from 2000 to 2008. Now exceeding $2 trillion, it’s set to grow by half by 2013. So many companies’ success depends on wooing these consumers. No longer can they rely on a vast homogenous market. David Lawenda, president of advertising sales for Spanish-language broadcaster Univision, says the ad industry must switch “from multicultural marketing to marketing to a multicultural nation.” And as Jim Stengel, former chief marketing officer for Proctor & Gamble, put it, minority groups “set trends

Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. (DPS) reported third-quarter 2010 adjusted earnings of 64 cents per share, compared with 59 cents in the year-ago period. Quarterly earnings also topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 60 cents. During the quarter, Dr Pepper’s net sales grew 2% year over year to $1.46 billion, narrowly missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.47 billion. The year-on-year growth was mainly attributable to higher sales volume, favorable foreign currency translations and revenues from the PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) license. Earlier this year, Dr Pepper signed a 25-year licensing deal with PepsiCo under which the latter will distribute Dr Pepper, Crush and Schweppes brands in the U.S. Dr Pepper received $900 million in cash from PepsiCo, which is being recorded as net sales, proportionally over a period of 25

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (CCE) recorded earnings per share of 58 cents a share (including results from Norway and Sweden), which topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 54 cents. Prior-year quarter earnings were 50 cents. Results for the reported quarter include Norway and Sweden while excluding the Coca Cola Enterprises, North American operation, post divestiture. Results for the prior-year comparable quarter, however, exclude Norway and Sweden and include the North American operation. In February, Coca-Cola Enterprise, in collaboration with the beverage giant Coca-Cola Company (KO), broached a deal, which involved the acquisition of the entire North American business of the bottler by Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola Enterprises is now a newly registered company comprising CCE’s legacy European bottling operations, and the bottling operations in Norway and Sweden acquired from The Coca-Cola Company.
by Tony D’Altorio, Investment U Research Friday, October 22, 2010 A recent survey by TNS, the market researcher owned by WPP ADR (Nasdaq: WPPGY), showed the Internet as perhaps the most important form of communication. It also found that 61% of people with Internet access around the world used it daily. Only 54% watched television, 36% listened to the radio and 32% read a newspaper every day. Of course, the review was conducted of Internet users, so those figures make some sense. But that wasn’t all the study found… It highlighted how emerging markets are overtaking North America and Western Europe in social networking. And it pointed out regional variations in online behavior. A full third of the world’s Internet users now live in China, India, Brazil, Russia and Indonesia.

The Federal Reserve continues to be the enemy of savers. The minutes of the September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, released earlier this week, signaled the possibility of new actions to bring long-term interest rates down further. Specifically, several committee members stated that if the pace of the economic recovery does not strengthen or if inflation does not intensify, “they would consider it appropriate to take action soon.” What could this action be? Most likely, it would involve the Fed purchasing more Treasury securities. Since bond yields are inversely related to bond prices, more demand for Treasuries should effectively drive down yields. The FOMC also considered providing some type of target rate for either inflation or nominal GDP. (A nominal rate includes the impact of inflation. Conversely, a real

China’s surprise decision to raise interest rates took a toll on global markets as concerns mounted the move would slow the country’s economy and have a ripple-down effect. With the foreclosure crisis keeping investors on tenterhooks, Beijing’s decision to tighten rates came at a rather inappropriate time. The Dow average dropped below 11,000 for the first time since August. The blue-chip index fell 165 points, or 1.5%, to 10978. The broader S&P’s 500-stock index dropped 19 points, 1.6%, to 1165.90. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index, weighed down by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and IBM (NYSE:IBM), dropped nearly 44 points, or 1.8%, to 2436.95. Declining issues beat those that rose in price by a five-to-one margin. As investors adjusted their risk portfolios, the prices of government bonds rose while the dollar had its
