We have been watching the semi equipment stocks closely over the last few days and it seems as if our fears have been realized. Over the last five days, shares of KLA-Tencor (KLAC), Novellus Systems (NVLS) and Lam Research Corporation (LRCX) lost 5.9%, 5.9% and 3.8%, respectively. Moreover, the decline was more pronounced after April 7, when Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM) lowered its outlook on semiconductor unit growth for 2011, citing concerns related to Japan. We cannot say we are surprised. We have been thinking that the Japan crisis could have a more far-reaching effect on semiconductor manufacturing than immediately met the eye. This is because Japan is not only a significant consumer of semiconductors, but also a significant supplier. What this basically means is that components coming out

Shares were up marginally by 0.99%, as guidance indicated uncertain demand. Revenue Novellus reported revenue of $367.2 million, up 14.3% sequentially and 107.6% year over year, better than management’s guidance range of $335-365 million. Management stated that Novellus continued to gain from the PC refresh cycle, as well as rapid growth in the smartphone market, which resulted in strong demand from NAND memory customers. However, memory prices weakened during the quarter, indicating increased supply. Technology upgrades to 300mm manufacturing and 3x nm are driving strength at foundries. Management stated that third-party comments indicated continued growth from smartphone and PC markets, with additional momentum from tablets that would compete against

This was in spite of the revenue beat of 6.1% and mainly on account of a higher-contribution from the loss-making EES unit (even excluding the one-time inventory adjustments, EES segment margins declined 309 bps). Analysts are generally more positive about Applied Materials after the company announced its decision to close down Sunfab. This is evident from the fact that more than a third of the analysts providing estimates for the July quarter raised their expectations over the last 30 days and around half of the analysts have nudged up estimates for the following quarter. Moreover, expectations for 2010 and 2011 have also improved. The net change in estimates was minimal however. Revenue Revenue of $2.52 billion was

Applied Materials’ (AMAT) second quarter 2010 earnings beat the Zacks Consensus by a penny. As a consequence, shares did not move around too much. Estimates for Applied Materials underwent a correction when the company reported first quarter results. At that time, Applied Materials clarified the strong outlook for the year, which reflected expectations of market research companies. Although a couple of analysts have fine-tuned their estimates in 30 days leading to the second quarter earnings announcement, the impact on the Zacks Consensus Estimate was negligible. Revenue Revenue of $2.29 billion was up 24.2% sequentially and 125.0% year over year. The year-over-year increase was reflective of the turnaround in the capital equipment market and particularly, the company’s exposure to the memory segment, which should grow in leaps and bounds this year.

With the broad turnaround in the semiconductor capital equipment market underway, some of the other equipment makers, such as Research (LRCX) and Teradyne (TER) also reported stronger results. Consequently, we are very positive about the largest equipment company Applied Materials (AMAT) which is expected to report within the next few weeks. Revenue Revenue of $478.3 million was up 8.6% sequentially and 54.5% year over year. The sequential strength was due to a larger section of customers increasing their capex investments, particularly in advanced technology.
The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. For example, the PCs we use, the cars we drive, the phones with which we communicate, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games, and the planes and weapons used to protect us all use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The industry has come a long way since the last downturn, with most of the players streamlining operations and transferring more routine

Novellus Systems (NVLS) raised its fourth-quarter revenue and earnings outlook, as a result of the ongoing recovery in the semiconductor market. The company now expects revenues of $225-245 million, compared to previous guidance of $215-245 million, which raises the mid-point from $230 to $235 million. Management had previously guided to bookings increase of 25-50%, which were not subsequently revised. Therefore, we assume that bookings are expected to remain within this range. GAAP gross margin expectations were also not revised and remain in the 44-47% range. EPS expectations were raised to 25-40 cents from previous guidance of 20-40 cents. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the fourth quarter is pegged at 31 cents, close to the middle of the revised range. The company’s third-quarter earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a

Applied Materials’ (AMAT) fourth quarter earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 12 cents. Revenue beat the consensus by 15.6%. All the peer companies — ASML Holdings (ASML), KLA Tencor (KLAC) and Lam Research (LRCX) — reported results that also beat the consensus. The general improvement in results is proof of the growing momentum in the semiconductor capital equipment market. Revenue Revenue of $1.53 billion was up 34.6% sequentially and down 25.3% year over year. The year-over-year decline in revenue moderated with respect to the three preceding quarters. Revenue by Segment All segments contributed to the sequential increase, as well as the year over year decline in revenue. Silicon Systems (SSG) remains the largest segment, with a 43% revenue revenue share. Segment revenue increased 31.7% sequentially and declined 11.8% year

KLA-Tencor Corporation’s (KLAC) first quarter earnings beat the Zacks consensus by 29 cents. Revenue beat the consensus by 3.1%. This follows significantly stronger results reported by ASML Holdings NV (ASML). We currently expect the other large equipment makers, Applied Materials (AMAT) and Lam Research (LRCX) to also report strong results. Revenue Revenue of $342.7 million was up 21.7% sequentially and down 35.6% year over year. The sequential strength was due to a larger section of customers increasing their capex investments, particularly in advanced technology. The technical complexity in manufacturing semiconductors and increasingly challenging yield issues are the drivers behind these investments. Products generated 67% of total revenue, an increase of 30.1% sequentially and a decline of 43.5% year over year. Services revenue was 33% of the total, up 7.8% sequentially

ASML Holding N.V. (ASML) was the first of the capital equipment companies to report third quarter results. Judging from the 100.7% increase in revenue to €555.3 million, we feel more optimistic about Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA Tencor (KLAC), Lam Research (LRCX) and Tokyo Electron, the other big players in the space. Although the year-over-year decline of 20.3% indicates that sales are still quite weak, performance is still significantly better than the 67.2% and 80.0% year-over-year declines in the preceding two quarters. The strengthening markets are not so much a reflection of a recovery, according to management, as they are a result of new product introductions, leading to increased demand from memory and foundry customers in Asia. Revenue increase in the last quarter was driven by increases in both average selling

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) recently announced that the pay cuts it had initiated in January this year would be reinstated in December. Hourly workers had suffered pay cuts of up to 5%, while executives at higher rungs took bigger cuts of up to 20%. The company expected the job cuts and rationalization of pay to help it deal with recessionary pressures that were hurting its already unprofitable business. In March, the company signed a deal with an Abu Dhabi state-sponsored financial institution that brought in some cash, enabled it to operate in a fabless model and improved its chances of achieving profitability in the near term. CEO Dirk Meyer said that the company’s new product lineup and the strengthening economy were the reasons for the increased confidence. He expressed optimism
