Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Financial support from the U.S. government ultimately transformed to comparative stability during the year. The government had taken several steps, including programs offering capital injections and debt guarantees, to stabilize the financial system. Also, the banks are working hard to address problem credit, primarily in residential and

Comerica Incorporated (CMA) reported first quarter 2011 net income of 57 cents per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 48 cents and improving from the prior-quarter figure of 53 cents. However, earnings saw a striking year-over-year improvement from a loss of 46 cents. The year-over-year improvement in the results reflected the increase in non-interest income and net interest margin, partially offset by higher non-interest expenses and lower net interest income. Furthermore, a significant improvement in credit quality also acted as a positive catalyst. Net income attributed to common shareholders of Comerica totaled $102 million compared with a net loss of $71 million in the first quarter of 2010 and net income of $95 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. The results also compare favorably with the prior quarter earnings of 87 cents and the prior-year quarter earnings of 75 cents. Operating results, however, exclude certain discount accretion related to former conduit assets, restructuring charges related to reduction in staff and merger and integration costs. On a GAAP basis, earnings for the quarter came in at 93 cents per share, compared with earnings of 16 cent in the prior quarter and 99 cents in the year-ago quarter. Results in the quarter were aided primarily by growth in operating revenues and higher net interest margin, which were offset partly by higher operating expenses. (STI) said on Wednesday that it has repaid the entire $4.85 billion in bailout money it had received from the government for its participation in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). SunTrust financed its TARP repayment primarily through proceeds from a $1.04 billion stock offering and $1 billion debt offering that it completed last week. The company funded the remaining dues from its available cash. Following the release of the Federal Reserve’s much-awaited stress test results earlier this month, SunTrust received the authorization to raise capital. SunTrustis one of the three banks that repaid the total $7.4 billion of TARP funds on Wednesday. With this repayment, the bank bailout swung into profit. The company has fully repaid its $2.5 billion in outstanding Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds on Wednesday. KeyCorp’s repayment was financed by proceeds from the recent $625 million common equity offerings and $1 billion debt offerings, in addition to other funds from available resources. Following the approval from the Federal Reserve earlier in the month, the company had announced the pricing of its public offerings of 70,621,470 shares of its common stock at a price of $8.85 per share. KeyCorp repurchased all 25,000 shares of its Fixed-Rate Perpetual Preferred Stock, Series B, which were originally issued in December 2008 under TARP’s Capital Purchase Program. This will allow the bailed-out auto and mortgage lender to repay its dues to the Treasury. During the height of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009, Ally Financial received more than $17 billion by way of bailout money in several transactions as part of its participation in the government’s $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). The U.S. Treasury now owns a 73.8% stake in the company. The Treasury obtained this stake after the company, formerly known as GMAC Inc., almost collapsed.
Some of the U.S. banks will be notified about the results of the second round of stress tests conducted by the Federal Reserve, the Wall Street Journal reported. This long expected decision is a major milestone for the banking sector, signalling that the notified banks have fully come out of the effects of the financial crisis. This paves the way for these banks to reinstate dividends and buyback shares. Due to the recession, the Fed had put restrictions on increasing banks’ dividends and share buybacks in exchange of the bailout money. Following the repayment of the bailout money, many banks started pressuring the regulators to let them restore their dividends. In January, all 19 banks which were subjected to the stress tests in 2009, had submitted their capital plans to

Following the release of the Federal Reserve’s much-awaited stress test results on Friday, many big banks that were granted the green signal took immediate action to raise their dividends. The Fed allowed America’s strongest banks that have passed the second round of stress tests to operate independently without strict government restrictions that were imposed during the height of financial crisis in 2008. These banks can now increase dividends and buy back shares, both of which were prohibited for the last few years following concerns that banks might not have sufficient capital to counter another financial crisis. The results also brought good tidings for the weaker banks. These were given the consent to raise capital by issuing shares to repay the money they received as part of their participation in the

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the much-awaited results of the stress tests conducted by the Federal Reserve would be out soon. The results will demonstrate if large U.S. banks’ balance sheets are healthy enough to boost dividends. In January, all 19 banks which were subjected to the stress tests in 2009, had submitted their capital plans to the Fed. These banks, including big names such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. These are essentially precautionary measures amid the economic recovery. And although banks such as KeyCorp (KEY) and SunTrust Banks Inc. (STI) are also subjected to the stress

This also compares favorably with a net loss from continuing operations of $1.03 in the prior-year quarter. Results for the reported quarter primarily benefited from a decrease in provision for loan losses and lower non-interest expenses. A strong capital position was also among the positives. However, pressure on the top-line, primarily as a result of lower non-interest income and slothful growth in average earning assets, was among the downside. KeyCorp’s net loss from continuing operations came in at $98 million, compared to $507 million in the prior-year quarter. The results for the year-ago quarter were significantly impacted by a higher loan loss provision

The U.S. Treasury said on Monday that new loans at nine major banks, which received significant government aid through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) during the height of the financial crisis and have not repaid yet, tumbled in Jan 2010. In its monthly survey of lending on the TARP banks, the Treasury found that new loan originations at these nine banks fell about 35% from Dec 2009 to $35.9 billion in Jan 2010. The amount was even lower than $41.6 billion of loan originations in October when new loans had fallen last. According to the Treasury, the drop in loan originations in January could partially be a result of large increases in originations during November and December of 2009.
PNC Financial Services Group (PNC) announced yesterday that it is coming back to its prior compensation policies meant for its executives. This announcement comes after the company last month freed itself from the Troubled Asset Repurchase Program (TARP). In August of last year, the company increased the salary of five of its senior executives entirely in the form of stock units to comply with the TARP requirement. This mode of compensation has been eliminated in 2010. However, for 2010, the executives will be entitled to the company’s annual incentive scheme, which calculates bonuses on the company’s operating earnings (net income minus any extraordinary items, acquisition costs and other one-time charges). Revision of incentives will be based on executives’ performance, and the executives will also have to meet specific targets. Last

PNC Financial Services Group (PNC) has set itself free from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) by redeeming $7.6 billion of Series N preferred shares held by the United States Treasury. In order to fund the transaction, PNC Financial had issued $3.0 billion in stock earlier during the month along with selling its fund servicing unit, PNC Global Investment Servicing Inc. (GIS) to BNY Mellon (BK) for $2.3 billion in cash. Apart from these, the bank also issued $2 billion of senior notes earlier during the month. These capital raising actions bodes well for PNC Financial by providing it financial flexibility without significant equity share dilution. The GIS transaction, which is slated to close in the third quarter of 2010, is expected to raise PNC’s Tier 1 capital ratio to

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has been nominated for a second term, and is facing a confirmation hearing in the Senate today. Below are the key parts of his prepared testimony, and my reaction to it. “Over the past two years, our nation, indeed the world, has endured the most severe financial crisis since the Great Depression, a crisis which in turn triggered a sharp contraction in global economic activity. Today, most indicators suggest that financial markets are stabilizing and that the economy is emerging from the recession. “Yet our task is far from complete. Far too many Americans are without jobs, and unemployment could remain high for some time even if, as we anticipate, moderate economic growth continues. Though there will be those in Congress who disapprove, it is highly probable that Bernanke will keep his job after January 31st.
