Home builder Meritage Homes Corporation (MTH) recently announced that it will redeem its 6.25% senior notes due 2015 carrying an aggregate principal amount of $285 million. The closing date for this notes issue is April 10, 2012.
KB Home (KBH) faces a fragile housing market. Increased availability of housing alternatives may keep the company’s earnings under pressure. Furthermore, the company’s housing market is highly concentrated, which poses threats to its earnings performance. The company did post a profit of $0.18 per share during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, which was much higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.03. Nevertheless, the negative factors have led us to downgrade the recommendation on shares of KB Home from Neutral to Underperform with a target price of $10.00. Our long-term Underperform recommendation on the stock indicates that it will perform lower than the overall market. Our $10 target price, 25.0X our 2013 EPS estimate, reflects this view. With yesterday’s gains, the Dow washed out the losses it suffered on Wednesday and sits comfortably in the green for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) jumped 1.1% to settle at 12,287.04. The Standard & Poor 500 inched up 1.1% and finished yesterday’s trading at 1,263.02. Adding to the gloom was a Wall Street Journal report that suggested the Federal Reserve had accepted new standards that require banking giants to hold extra capital.
Earnings Preview 12/16/11 There will only be a handful of firms reporting next week as the third quarter reporting season is almost over. A total of just 34 firms are scheduled to report, including 13 of the S&P 500. Most of the firms reporting have November fiscal period-ends, which means that they are reporting fourth quarter results. While few in number, some of the reports come from firms that are highly significant in that they will give clues to the overall direction of earnings in the fourth quarter. The firms reporting next week include: Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL), ConAgra (CAG), General Mills (GIS), Micron Technology (MU), Nike (NKE) and Walgreens (WAG). There will, however, be plenty of economic data for the market to chew on.

Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL) recently announced that it has acquired CamWest Development LLC. The company did not disclose the financial terms of the deal but stated that it will start reaping benefits from the acquisition in the upcoming year. CamWest is considered as one of the largest privately held home building companies in the Pacific Northwest. This acquisition will mark Toll Brothers’ entry into the Seattle market, which is both affluent and possesses a strong employment base. As a result of the acquisition, Toll Brothers’ existing backlog increased by around 1,500 lots (1,300 lots owned and 200 lots controlled) in King and Snohomish Counties. According to management, the acquisition will increase Toll Brothers’ selling community count by approximately 15 communities.
The weaknesses prevailing in the housing and construction industry in the U.S. have once again come to the fore as the National Association of Home Builders lowered its September outlook. Poor employment growth, increased availability of foreclosed homes, strict mortgage lending rules and lower confidence have restricted the demand for new homes to an all-time low. Moreover, potential customers who are ready to buy homes are opting for pre-owned homes, given their affordable pricing. As a result, the purchases of pre-owned homes have increased almost 2% year over year during August to 5.03 million (annual rate), which in turn affected new home sales. New home sales for August were at a six-month low of 294,000 units (annualized growth). This trend has affected earnings in the recent quarters and is also

(TOL), have decided to pay lenders up to $340 million to meet their claims and settle legal actions related to a failed housing development deal near Las Vegas. Individually, Los Angeles-based KB Home will be required to pay approximately $216 million–$225 million to the lenders and is expected to incur net obligation charges between $216 million and $240 million. Beazer will reportedly pay an amount somewhere between $15.7 million and $17 million, while Toll Brothers is said to have reached a cash settlement for an undisclosed amount with lenders. Reportedly, another homebuilder, Arizona-based Meritage Homes Corporation (MTH) also owes $13.2 million to its lenders under the same bankruptcy settlement.

The latest Case-Shiller data–released today, confirms that housing prices in the U.S. are suffering from a double dip. Home prices fell 4.2% in the first quarter of 2011 and have a hit a new post-bubble low. To make matters worse, 60% of the component cities in the Case-Shiller index posted new lows in March. Only Washington DC and Seattle posted increases in prices. Overall, prices are now at levels last seen in 2002. Analysts have found that the end of the home buyer tax credit last year removed much-needed support for the market. Our Chief Market Strategist Richard Suttmeier has been predicting this event for quite some time now. His analysis of the housing and banking sectors has been quite accurate with warnings about the frailty of the market and

Investor sentiment was bolstered on Friday, as gas prices eased off and economic data struck a positive note. However, the modest gains ahead of the Memorial Day holiday were not strong enough to prevent a fourth consecutive week of losses for the indices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained 0.3% to settle at 12,441.58. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was up 0.4% and ended at 1,331.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index finished at 2,796.86, after rising 0.5%. Markets rose for the third consecutive day, but the modest gains failed to wash out the losses suffered earlier in the week. This was the first time since February 2010 that markets have been in the red for four consecutive weeks. For the week, The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq were

The rising mortgage rates in the U.S. have pulled down the total mortgage applications in the country, thereby discouraging home buyers. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate increased slightly to 4.93% from 4.92% in the last week, leading to a 2% drop in mortgage application on a seasonally adjusted basis. The limited credit availability is a crucial factor behind the decline in home sales in the U.S. economy. The banks have been tightening their credit facility mostly because of tightened lending standards and uncertain economic prospects. In turn,

However, volumes once again remained low and reflected investor cautiousness ahead of earnings results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Standard & Poor 500 surged 0.7% each, closing at 12,279.01 and 1,319.44, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite Index inched up by a percentage point and finished the day at 2,756.89. Volumes have been particularly low for the past few days and the situation was no different on Wednesday with only 3.6 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange.
We had poor home sales data last week–new housing starts came in at their lowest levels since 1974. Today, we got even more. New home sales fell yet again and came in at a new record low. The US Commerce Department–which has been keeping this data set almost 50 years, reports that on a seasonally-adjusted annual basis the US is on track to sell 250,000 homes. That is far below the rate of 700,000 considered “healthy.” The prices of the new homes continue to decline as well and have now declined to the levels of December, 2003. Our Chief Market Strategist Richard Suttmeier has been tracking this issue for years now, and called the initial bubble way before most analysts. He notes in his most recent ValuEngine FDIC Report that

Stocks advanced for a second straight day as better-than-anticipated retail sales and housing data continued to point toward economic strength. European Central Bank’s assertion that it would not abandon its plan to buy government bonds helped contain eurozone worries, helping stocks extend their gains. Financials led on the upside, after Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) raised its rating on the sector to “overweight,” saying an improving economy is helping U.S. banks’ operations. The upgrade sent Dow components Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) and JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) up 3.5% and 1.16%, respectively. The Dow average, after its 250-point surge Wednesday, added another 107 points to its tally, marking its best two-day run since early July. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite index gained nearly 30 points, or 1.2%, to 2579.35. The widely tacked S&P 500 index

A large drop in existing home sales also disappointed investors and helped send benchmark indexes sharply lower. The Dow industrials dropped 134 points, or 1.32%, to 10040.45. The S&P’s 500-stock index fell 15 points, or 1.45%, to 1051.87. The tech-heavy Nasdaq led the decliners with a drop of 36 points, or 1.7%. It closed at 2123. On the New York Stock Exchange, three stocks fell in price for every one that advanced. Volume picked up slightly. However, housing sector shares benefitted on some brokerage reports that suggested the sector looks attractive at this point. Meritage Homes (NYSE:MTH) climbed 3%; KB Home (NYSE:KBH) rose 2.5%.
KB Home (KBH) shares are weak today after the company reported weaker-than-expected net order numbers for the fourth quarter 2009. Quarterly earnings, on the other hand, came in much better than expected, helped in large part by revenue from land sales. KBH has revealed a net income of $100.7 million or $1.31 per share in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 ended November 30, 2009, in sharp contrast to a net loss of $307.3 million or $3.96 per share in the fourth quarter of the prior fiscal year. The profit is even more surprising compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 51 cents per share for KBH. The improvement in profit was attributable to higher land sale revenues. Revenue dipped 27% to $674.6 million during the quarter
