Given the Christmas overhang, consolidated volumes remained substantively low, and final minutes’ movement took the Dow slightly lower to end its winning run of four consecutive trading days. Brick-and-mortar retailers ran extended hours post Thanksgiving in order to snatch some business from Internet retailers who continue to grow at a brisk pace. The growth trajectory of online sellers remains intact despite huge destruction of consumer wealth during the financial crisis in 2008 and tepid recovery since then. On the other hand, retail icons for middle-class shoppers, J. C. Penney Company (JCP) and

On the economic front, we got better-than-expected weekly Jobless Claims numbers, raising hopes for a favorable showing from Friday’s non-farm payroll report. We also have a surprise interest rate cut from the European Central Bank, likely indicating a new monetary policy course for the central bank under Mario Draghi, who replaced Jean-Claude Trichet only three days ago. A little later, we get the September Factory Orders and the October ISM Service Sector Index reading. The big wait on the U.S. economic front now is for the Friday labor market report. Given a banking/housing/credit crisis that nearly melted down the economy, you would have thought that high-end luxury retailers like Tiffany & Co. (TIF) and Coach (COH) and upper-tier department stores like Nordstrom (JWN) and Macy’s (M) would have suffered the most. To the contrary, these were terrific investments as their earnings continued to surprise quarter after quarter. The consumer was not hunkering down in Wal-Mart (WMT) or Kohl’s (KSS). She was out shopping like nobody’s business. More on that surprising trend of the past two years in a moment. Now Comes the Recession? Well, the high-end may still do well, but it finally happened. Fears of a double-dip drove both shoppers and

This is the fifth of the company’s targeted 7 new openings for fiscal 2011. The other restaurants have already opened in Texas, New Jersey, Florida and Connecticut. The newly opened restaurant spans approximately 8,500 square feet and accommodates around 251 guests. It is located in the Hillsdale Shopping Center, which hosts over 130 stores and is anchored by three department stores (Nordstrom Inc. (JWN), Macy’s Inc (M) and Sears). We expect the restaurant to benefit immensely from its strategic positioning. We also expect a great variety of menu offering at the new unit to attract guests.
Following a record four back-to-back 400+-point moves in the Dow, will we close the week on an equivalent sized move on Friday as well? There is certainly no shortage of data, both here from the U.S. as well as from across the pond in Europe, that can provide the catalysts for moves in any direction. But if we have learned anything from the roller coaster ride of recent days, it is that foretelling the direction of the market’s day-to-day moves has become extremely difficult, if not altogether impossible. That said, I am reasonably confident that we are getting closer to a bottom. The sharp pullback of the last two weeks reflected the adjustment process that the market needed to undergo to account for the economy’s reduced growth prospects in the

A Glimpse at Fiscal 2010 Fiscal 2010 for retailers was a year of continuous process of streamlining and assimilating internal processes. With this priority in mind, retailers concentrated more on aligning inventories, improving efficiencies and spending on technology, which led them to enter fiscal 2011 with a more optimistic outlook. The Challenges and Opportunities of 2011 The retail industry is well positioned to face another year of challenges and utilize to the fullest the opportunities made available by the economic recovery, even as the quality and pace of the recovery has left much to be desired. Despite continued problems, consumers are slowly gaining confidence in the market and increasing their spending power, which is helping retail sales show signs of recovery. According to projections by the National Retail Federation (NRF),

On the operational front, retailers would like to hone their supply chains and maintain lean inventory levels. Keys to Success The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that retail

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U’s Senior Analyst Wednesday, November 24, 2010: Issue #1395 Forget the breathless buildup to Black Friday – the much-ballyhooed Thanksgiving sales event. In an effort to pre-empt the frantic holiday shopping season, America’s retailers are already in full-on sales mode, having instituted “Black November” instead.
With the economic backdrop steadily improving, albeit at a very slow pace, the outlook for the holiday shopping season has brightened. According to NRF’s 2010 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, U.S. consumers plan to spend an average of $688.8 on holiday-related shopping, a slight rise from last year’s $681.8. Therefore, retailers are offering right-trend and well-designed assortments without compromising quality in order to improve merchandise margins, in addition to compelling price points. In the United States, markets reflected those worries as the Dow average nosedived below the psychologically important 11000 mark but value buying at lower levels helped the average stage a sharp recovery. The Dow average fell 39.51 points, or 0.4%, to close at 11052.49, after plunging as much as 160 points during the session. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 9.34 points, or 0.4%, to 2525.22. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 51 points, or 0.5%, to 10,320.10. The blue-chip average had jumped 254 points on Wednesday on better-than-expected manufacturing reports in China and the U.S. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index advanced 10 points, or 0.9%, to 1,090.10, while the Nasdaq composite index climbed 23.17, or 1.1%, to 2,200.01. Sales were $506 million for the month as compared with $497 million in the prior comparable month. Dillard saw an above-average sale in the Eastern region, while revenues from the Western and Central regions were below trend. The sales performance in the cosmetics category was significantly low. The Late Memorial Day weekend gave a strong momentum to sales in June, which eventually tailed off by the middle of the month. We believe the consumer spending still reflects the scars of the recession. The late Memorial Day only shifted the weekend holiday-related sales to June 2010 boosting the sales to some extent.
This morning, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported retail sales for April. The headline number looks pretty solid. Seasonally adjusted retail sales were $366.4 billion, up 0.4% from March and 8.8% from April 2009 (which is against really low comps). Economists were expecting a monthly increase of 0.2%. The March number was revised higher to 2.1% from 1.9%. When we dig a little deeper, however, the report isn’t as strong as the headline suggests. Driving the April’s gains were building materials, which increases $1.5 billion, or 6.9%, to $25.5 billion. Autos were up 0.5%; gasoline stations were up 0.5%, and drug stores increased 0.9%. Growth in those areas masked weakness in other categories. Electronics and restaurants were flat. However, furniture was down 1.2%; grocery stores fell 0.5%; apparel stores were

May 6, 2010 I wrote this on Wednesday evening, prior to today’s (Thursday’s) large market drop. The primary point I make in the commentary below—that you should not sell simply because it is May—is still valid. Today’s drop has nothing to do with the calendar. Why are traders suddenly very fearful of the problems in Greece, when they weren’t last week or last month? My guess is that this market activity has more to do with momentum trading, in this case to the downside, than anything else. Your best defense is to stay diversified and have an allocation strategy that is appropriate for your age and financial situation. For more information, visit the Asset Allocation (http://www.aaii.com/assetallocation/) section of AAII.com. “Sell in May and go away” is an old adage among

The four-week moving average — which, given the inherent volatility of the weekly measures is generally considered a better measure to watch — rose by 2,250 to 450,250. As the graph below shows (from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/) we are still in a much better place than we were a year ago, when the four-week average stood at 643,000. After declining sharply and steadily in the last eight months of 2009, the behavior of initial jobless claims has turned erratic in 2010. It looks like we might be starting to follow the pattern of the previous two recoveries,

Yesterday we got news that New Home Sales had fallen to their second all-time record low (since the data started in 1963) in a row. With other areas of the economy clearly on the mend (at least for now) the question arises: when will housing come back? I want to focus on new home sales, not existing home sales, because new home sales directly contribute to economic growth, while existing home sales have only an indirect effect. The U.S. is a much larger place now than it was back in 1963, both in terms of population and the overall size of the economy, even adjusted for inflation. With more and richer people, one would expect that there would be a demand for more and newer houses. In any economy, be it booming like in the late 1990’s or falling off a cliff like it was a year ago, there will always be some jobs that are created and some that are going away. The JOLTS data gives us a picture of what is

What really sets this recession apart from all previous post-war recessions is the difficulty people have in going back to work after they have been laid off. In any economic environment, there are always jobs that are being lost, and new jobs created. It is the net number that is shown in the employment reports like we got this morning. This time around, and particularly in recent months, it has not been that the economy has been losing old jobs are a super-high rate, but that there has been very little new hiring. One manifestation of this is that long-term unemployment, people who have been out of work for more than 26 weeks (the point at which regular state unemployment benefits usually run out), has simply exploded. The number of

Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 20,000 this week to 512,000. Last week’s numbers were revised slightly higher, so arguably the drop was 18,000, but that’s still a nice improvement. The four-week moving average dropped by 3,000 to 523,750. Since new claims can be volatile from week to week, the four-week moving average is generally considered a better gauge of where we are. The graph below (from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/) shows the history of that average. We are now 135,000 below the peak set back in April. This is a key piece of evidence that the recession is over. However, we remain above the highest levels seen in either of the last two recessions. The level indicates that we are still losing jobs, but at a slower rate than we had
