Total Industrial Production rose by 0.7% in October, much better than the 0.4% rise that was expected. However, September was revised down to a decline of 0.1% from being up 0.2%. The Industrial production numbers are often distorted by Utility Output, which is often affected by the weather as much as it is by economic activity. To get a sense of what is happening in the economy, it is worth looking at just manufacturing output. Factory output rose by 0.5%, up from 0.3% in September (revised down from 0.4%) and 0.3% in August. Year over year, total production is up 3.9% while factory output is up 4.1%. That is a healthy increase on both counts. Utility production was once again weak, with a decline of 0.1% for the month, but

Not all the important news is centered on Greece and Italy. The International Energy Agency, or IEA, this week released its World Energy Outlook. The IEA is not some wild-eyed “peak oil/global warming” fringe group. They are about as mainstream and staid a group as you are going to find. The bullet points below come from the fact sheet associated with the report (see here). I comment on the implications, particularly the investment implications after each bullet point. Major events of the last year have had an impact on short- and medium-term energy trends, but have done little to quench the world’s increasing thirst for energy in the long term. The level and pattern of energy use worldwide varies markedly across the three scenarios in this year’s World Energy Outlook

by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Monday, September 12, 2011 Oil Services Industry Set for “Gusher Of Profits” As Ian Cooper’s recent article for Wealth Daily stated, the world isn’t necessarily running out of oil. It’s running out of “easy to get” oil. Oil companies aren’t chasing the vast amounts of fuel trapped in shale or tar sands because they want to… These sources are becoming the only ones left as production at the largest inland oil fields is declining, or is at least expected to soon. In its 2010 World Energy Outlook, the International Energy Agency estimated that approximately 40 percent of the oil production needed by 2020 has yet to be found or developed. By 2030, it will likely be closer to 60 percent. For the foreseeable future,

However, the Dow and S&P 500 recorded their steepest monthly fall since May 2010, even as indices extended their stay in the green for the fourth-straight day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) opened with gains and was trading substantively higher. However, the Dow lost some of those gains at a later stage to close at 11,613.53, up 0.5%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) climbed 0.5% to finish the day at 1,218.89. The Nasdaq Composite Index could manage only marginal gains and increased 0.1% to settle at 2,579.46.
Upward earnings estimate revisions and positive earnings surprises tend to go hand in hand with a good Zacks Rank. That is certainly no surprise, as those are the key factors that go into determining the rank. However, in recent quarters, almost as much attention is being paid to how a company performs on the top line as to how well it is doing on the bottom line. Therefore I wanted to look for firms that would look good if we had a sales-based Zacks Rank, as well as looking good on the “normal” Zacks Rank. I started with all the firms that currently hold the conventional Zacks #1 Rank and a market capitalization above $500 million, and then required that the consensus revenue estimates to have risen by at least

(BUCY) is now a step closer to being finalized as it has received a go-ahead by the U.S. Department of Justice. The clearance will allow the acquisition to be clinched by mid 2011 subject to other closing conditions being met. In November last year, Caterpillar announced its intention to acquire Bucyrus, a South Milwaukee-based manufacturer of surface and underground mining equipment, in a transaction worth $8.6 billion (including debt). The deal is touted to be the biggest in the company’s history. The billions-of-dollar deal capitalizes on the rising demand for coal and minerals triggered by growth in the emerging nations.
We are encouraged by the long-term fundamentals of the mining industry, which provides Joy Global (JOYG) with substantial growth potential as conditions improve in the U.S., China and India. The company’s first quarter earnings were almost in line with estimates on a significant pick-up in the company’s orders. Additionally, management’s impressive cost-restructuring initiatives, together with expectations of increased spending plans on part of the mining industry, should help the company stay ahead of the curve, in our view. Given the company’s robust 2011 outlook and improving mining industry fundamentals, we see Joy Global shares performing ahead of the broader market going forward and maintain our Outperform recommendation on the stock.
While last week GDP growth came in better than expected at 3.5%, which was a very welcome development, there was very little change in the coverall shape of GDP. This is a troubling development for the long term. GDP is the sum of spending by the Consumer, Private Investment, Government Spending and Net Exports. The Graph below shows the percentage each of them has contributed to overall GDP since 1947. The Consumer is still by far the dominate force in the economy, and it is becoming more so. In the 3Q, PCE, meaning the consumer, rose to 70.98% of GDP, up from 70.66% in the second quarter. That is an all-time record high. At the same time, private investment was virtually unchanged near an all-time low as a share of

In August, industrial production rose 0.8% from July, and the July increase was revised from a gain of 0.5% to a gain of 1.0%. In manufacturing, production was up 0.6% following an upwardly revised gain of 1.4% in July (was 1.0%). Output at the country’s mines rose 0.5% following a 0.6% gain in July. Utility output, which can be affected as much by the weather as by economic activity, rose 1.9% in August following a 1.6% decline in July. These increases are a big turnaround from what we had been seeing. On a year-over-year basis, total industrial production is still down 10.7%, with manufacturing down 12.2% and mining down 10.5%. Utility output is basically unchanged on a year-over-year basis, down only 0.1%. Having two back-to-back gains in industrial production is highly significant,

It also offers a wide range of value-additive aftermarket services aimed at enhancing reliability and optimizing working life of machineries.
We are confident about the long-term fundamentals of the mining industry, which is further supported by a sustainable secular shift in commodity demand in the emerging economies. This will provide Joy Global (JOYG) substantial growth potential once the global economy emerges from the ongoing turmoil. Joy Global aims at maximizing operating efficiency and useful life of mining equipment through value-added aftermarket services, which gives the company significant edge over its competitors. Additionally, the stable revenue stream from the high-margin aftermarket operations help Joy Global offset its cyclical original equipment business. Of late, Joy Global management has implemented several strategies to optimize cost-structure and realign production capacity to cope with the slowing customer orders and stay competitive amid the ongoing global slowdown.
Joy Global (JOYG) posted an EPS of $1.21 for the third quarter FY 2009, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 96 cents and $1.03 recorded in the year-ago quarter, primarily driven by better pricing, improved supply chain management and cost control measures. Operating margin for the quarter expanded to 20% from 15% posted during the corresponding period of last year due to operational efficiency and favorable manufacturing variances. Revenues grew 6% y-o-y to $956 million as a result of 19% growth in the Underground Mining Machinery segment – more than offsetting 8% and 10% decline in the Surface Mining Equipment and the Crushing & Conveying segments, respectively. Original equipment sales increased 19%, largely due to good execution of the strong backlog, primarily in the United States and South Africa. However,

Renewable Energy Reality: Coal by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist Friday, January 9, 2008: Issue #913 The Obama administration has made a big deal about renewable energy. Over the next several years, the new President has plans to spend roughly $150 billion promoting and enabling its growth. And with $700 billion flowing from the United States into OPEC’s pockets every year, I don’t think you’ll get much of an argument from anyone about the timeliness or the need for renewables. But even with massive amounts of capital investment – and widespread adoption by utilities and end users – renewable energy will still only account for roughly 10% of world energy output by 2030, an increase of only three percentage points from today’s estimated 7% contribution.
