Despite the fact that air carriers are losing money due to persistent market turmoil and surging fuel prices, we believe airline stocks are offering attractive returns and are the best bets at this point in time. The airline industry is consolidating in order to regain lost profits and improve operational efficiency. Further, the carriers are cutting capacities and taking several steps to lower their overall costs including fuel and non-fuel. The wild card is fuel prices, largely a function of geostrategic forces, which are outside of the control of the airlines. We expect crude oil and jet fuel prices to remain largely stable this year, but forecasting this key variable with any level of accuracy has always been extremely challenging. While air carriers are contemplating a more effective and enduring

JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU) reported an encouraging 14.3% year-over-year increase in traffic for the month of December. Airline traffic is measured in revenue passenger miles, which implies one mile flown by one passenger. On a year-over-year basis, capacity (or available seat miles) grew 17.1% and load factor (percentage of seats filled with passengers) contracted 190 basis points (bps) year over year to 80.2%. JetBlue also outpaced its major competitors Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL) with respect to traffic in December 2011. Delta and United Continental reported a decline of 2.3% and 0.7%, respectively, in traffic in December 2011, owing to lower capacity levels. However, the low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) registered a nominal year-over-year growth of 0.4% in its December traffic. Despite the volatility

The airline industry was hit hard in 2011, by the unrelenting market turmoil and rising fuel costs after a strong rebound in 2010. Major carriers experienced declining year-over-year earnings and revenues. Unfortunately, we foresee a similar scenario in 2012. Conditions could worsen in 2012, stemming from the weak outlook for Europe given its financial problems. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines are expected to generate overall profits of $3.5 billion in 2012, down from the estimated $6.9 billion in 2011 and $16 billion in 2010. This steep decline in the industry’s profitability is a function of the overall unfavorable macro backdrop in which the industry has to operate this year.
The airline industry needs to figure out ways to counter rising fuel expenses, which is estimated at $178 billion for this year and $198 billion for the next. Fuel will account for 30% of industry costs compared with 13% a decade ago. Despite higher ticket prices and improved ancillary revenues, air carriers have been struggling with rising fuel prices for the past several months. In order to alleviate the pressure, the carriers have been passing on the increased cost to customers in the form of fare hikes, which are helping these stocks to be profitable. Airlines have imposed about 10 broad fare increases this year but some refused to raise ticket prices. Air carriers are also focusing on cutting capacities and streamlining their costs by reducing non-fuel expenses. Airline traffic

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) cut its global airline industry profit forecast to $3.5 billion for 2012, with a net profit margin of 0.6%. Previously, in September, the Association had forecast profits of $4.9 billion. Tougher conditions will likely stem from the government’s failure to find any resolution to the Euro-zone sovereign debt crisis that has dwarfed economic growth. The problems in Europe are swelling and spilling over to the rest of the world. In the worst case, if the Euro-zone crisis shapes into a recession, the global airline industry would incur a loss of $8 billion – the worst since the 2008 financial crisis. Companies like Delta (DAL), JetBlue (JBLU) and Southwest (LUV) are the latest to join the bandwagon after United Continental (UAL) announced last week that it will launch flights in new international routes in the first half of 2012. United Continental, through its subsidiaries United and Continental Airline is set to leverage the benefits of profitable routes (including the emerging networks) by adding more flights on them and curtailing flights on those that are non-profitable.
With oil prices trading above the $100/barrel benchmark (first time since June), airline stocks are once again taking it on the chin. Amid positive news of flight additions across all major airlines, the surge in oil prices comes as a massive jolt for the U.S. carriers, resulting in the recent selloff in shares. United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL) fell 5.6% on Wednesday followed by decreases of 5.2% in AMR Corp. (AMR), 1.8% in Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) and 2.7% in JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU). Rising oil prices have become a serious problem for the hard-hit airline industry. Since 2002, crude oil prices have been registering new highs thanks to soaring demand from the emerging markets and a weaker U.S. dollar. Fuel expenses now account for approximately 30% of the industry’s

Air traffic remained mixed in October, like the month before. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles (RPM), which implies one mile flown by one passenger. The consolidated October traffic fell 5.1% at the largest U.S. airline United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL). Both international and domestic traffic slid 4.4% and 6.3%, respectively. Capacity (or available seat miles) decreased 3.4% year over year and load factor (percentage of seats filled with passengers) decreased 150 basis points (bps). United Continental expects a 9.5–10.5% year-over-year increase in unit revenue for the month of October, measured by passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM), a key metric in airlines. The October traffic for the second largest U.S. airline Delta Air Lines (DAL) declined 3.8%, representing the record low level since January

Markets are down today on a variety of bad economic news. In addition, oil prices are down big after a decision to release 60 million barrels of crude from strategic reserves–30 million of which will come from the US–in order to deal with the ongoing crises in the Middle East and the resultant disruptions in supply. This moves undercuts OPEC’s refusal to increase production a few weeks ago. Some stocks rallied on this news and none were better positioned to profit from lower oil prices than those in the fuel-dependent Transportation Sector. Over the past few years, we have seen a roller coaster ride for Airline Industry stocks as they have dealt with both recession and wild swings in fuel costs. Those prescient enough to lay on some fuel hedging strategies–such as Southwest–were recently

Southwest Airlines (LUV), a leading domestic carrier in the U.S. announced discounts on its flight tickets for fall travel. The offer was made on the occasion of the company’s fortieth anniversary on June 21. Together with its subsidiary, AirTran, the carrier has announced subsidized one-way fares at $40, $80 and $120 at the end of peak summer season. The sale ends on June 23 and is being levied on travel between August 23 and November 16. The airfare sale comes with conditions like no travel on Fridays and Sundays and blackout dates like Labor Day. Seats remain limited and the offer might not be valid on every flight. We believe the improving economy in the U.S. has perked up financial performances of carriers, particularly low-cost airlines such as the Southwest,

Discount U.S. airline JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU) reported a 10.6% year-over-year traffic increase in May 2011. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles, which implies one mile flown by one passenger. On a year-over-year basis, capacity (or available seat miles) grew 8.9% and load factor (percentage of seats filled with passengers) rose 130 basis points to 82.6% from 81.3% in May 2010. Despite escalating fuel prices, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) saw strong traffic in May compared to its rivals Delta Air Lines (DAL), a wholly owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation (AMR) — American Airlines — and United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL). Both JetBlue and Southwest recorded the same increase in May traffic, owing to strong domestic performances. Delta’s traffic increased 2.2%, while American Airlines’ traffic

We remain on the sidelines on the discounted U.S. airline JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU) following its first quarter results and rising fuel prices. JetBlue reported first quarter adjusted earnings per share of a penny, which was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate but double the year-ago earnings. The steeply rising fuel prices led to increased operating costs, and reduced profitability. Total revenue improved on the back of strong revenue generated from the Boston and Caribbean networks. We believe rising fuel prices will remain a major headwind for the company going forward. Additionally, higher dependence on theNew York metropolitan market, competitive pressure from its largest rivals Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), and automated technology may limit the upside potential of the stock. JetBlue expects higher

However, markets negated all these positives to drop further down for the third-consecutive day as lingering concerns about slowing growth continued to dampen investor sentiment. Markets ended at their lowest level since April 19 with the benchmarks dropping modestly. The Dow Jones Industrial dropped 0.2% to close at 12,356.21. Airline traffic is measured in billions of revenue passenger miles, which implies one mile flown by one passenger. On a year-over-year basis, capacity (or, available seat miles) grew 4.2% and load factor (percentage of seats filled with passengers) rose 230 basis point (bps) to 83.6% from 81.3% in March 2010. JetBlue reported stronger March traffic results compared to its largest rivals Delta Air Lines (DAL) and United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL). Delta’ traffic inched up 0.5%, while United Continental traffic dipped 2.2% in March.
United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), the largest U.S. airline reported a pull-back on its capacity growth plans for 2011 due to escalating fuel prices. Earlier this year, United Continental announced its guidance of 1% to 2% increase in consolidated capacity in 2011. However, in light of the steeply rising fuel prices, the company now expects to reduce capacity by approximately 1% in May and approximately 4% by September. Additionally, United Continental also plans to scrap unprofitable routes and less fuel-efficient aircraft from its fleet. Given the current changes in capacity estimates, the company expects its fiscal 2011 capacity to remain flat with the 2010 level. It estimates 2011 international capacity to increase 2.5% to 3.5% while domestic capacity to decrease 1.5% to 2.5% on a year-over-year basis. In recent times,

Larger carriers faced competitive pressure that led them to reduce their increase to as low as $10.00. The discounted carriers limited their price hikes to approximately 50% of the large carriers, which forced the latter to trim their increases to the same levels so as to avert any pricing disparities. Giant carriers such as American Airlines, subsidiary of AMR Corporation (AMR), Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) and US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) initiated a $20 roundtrip fare hike.
The economic downturn in 2009 and the oil price hike in 2008 had hit the airline industry hard. Now, with a revival in the economy, demand for air travel is improving. Revenue and profits of U.S. carriers are increasing with a surge in ticket demand, higher fares as well as improved revenues collected from extra fees. Further, airlines are benefiting from industry consolidation, substantial improvement in yields, an upturn in the market and better capacity management resulting in enhanced supply-demand conditions. The airline industry lost $16 billion in 2008 and $9.9 billion in 2009. Following a turnaround, airline industry would gain $15.1 billion in profits in 2010 as expected by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). However, the month of December affected most of the U.S. carriers yet again with

by Alexander Moschina, Investment U Research Friday, October 15, 2010 Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) – the largest carrier of domestic passengers in the United States – has just tapped into a virtual cash machine… Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. The major American hub is one of the busiest airports in the world, serving around 88 million passengers per year and 970,235 flights. It’s the home base for Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL) and AirTran Airways (NYSE: AAI). But despite its position at the top of the U.S. airline charts, Southwest doesn’t even get a sniff in Atlanta. It’s been “noticeably absent” from Atlanta for years, according to Dahlman Rose & Co. analyst, Helane Becker. However, it’s about to snag a space there. And with it, a huge slice of the market…

Overall Outlook is Positive The economic downturn and the oil price spike before it had negatively affected the airline industry over the past two years. Now, with the economy on the mend, albeit at a slower-than-expected pace, demand for air travel is increasing from last year’s depressed levels. To combat the recessionary effects, the airlines cut costs, slashed capacity and increased load factor. This momentum also prompted the industry into the current ongoing consolidation phase. Currently, airlines are benefiting from the rebound in traffic Incorporatedluding an increase in business travel and premium service demand. While the industry has thus far been fairly disciplined in managing capacity, it is bound to creep up going forward. This would help to keep fares in check, besides making it easier for travelers to book

U.S. Airlines Emerging from Recession With the global economy continuing to improve, there is steady improvement in demand for air travel as well as cargo since the beginning of 2010, after being badly affected by the economic downturn. Business travel, which is directly affected by the economic environment, plunged to an all-time low in 2009 as many corporations slashed travel budgets. Leisure travel as well as cargo also showed a remarkable decline. With improving economic sentiment, business travel and demand for air cargo are gradually catching up. However, leisure demand is still low and is expected to take a greater time to reverse, since spending in this area is highly discretionary. We may not see a noticeable improvement in that segment until clear evidence of labor-market improvements take hold. To

The Air Transport Association (ATA) filed a lawsuit against the National Mediation Board (NMB) to stop the Obama administration from putting in effect the new rules for unions, which makes the organization easier to assemble workers at airlines and railroads. NMB coordinates labor relations with airlines and rail companies under the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Airlines and railroads employ more than 500,000 workers, and about two-thirds of those are already in unions, which is much higher than the overall union membership rate of 12%. Under the new rule, union organization would be decided on the number of votes cast. The previous 76-year-old rule required a majority of an entire work group to approve unionization, effectively counting those who do not vote as “no” votes. Thus, ATA considers the new rule

Airlines are highly susceptible to negative financial impacts caused by major changes in the global economy that drive sudden severe swings in costs or revenues. During 2009, the combined forces of extensive competition and a severe global recession drove numerous U.S. and international carriers to file for bankruptcy and, in some cases, to liquidate. While fuel costs have significantly fallen since reaching historic highs in the summer of 2008, overall demand for airline services has decreased, and may decrease further. The depth of, and recovery from, the global recession continues to be uncertain. The current economic conditions may continue to have negative impacts on passenger demand, revenues, the level of credit card sales activity and cargo operations. The Airlines industry will be spending the next five years playing catch-up after

The U.S. Airlines industry has gone through several ups and downs in the past five years. Major negative influences on the industry included skyrocketing oil prices since 2005, economic recession in the U.S. since 2008, global economic downturn in 2009 and the “swine flu” outbreak. However, some industry operators hedged their fuel contracts at higher rates and are still paying the price. Many of the top airlines in the industry have responded by reducing services and aircraft fleet sizes, introducing
