Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) is a leading supplier of automotive interiors, batteries and other control equipment. Despite posting 14% growth in earnings per share and 2% growth in revenues, the company failed to meet the Zacks Consensus Estimate in the third quarter of fiscal 2012. The company expects softness in the global markets, and a weak Euro would hamper its earnings. We are also concerned about pricing pressure from OEMs and strong competition faced by the company. These have led us to downgrade our recommendation on the stock to Underperform from Neutral and set a target price of $25.00. Our long-term Underperform recommendation on the stock indicates that it will perform below the market. Our $25.00 target price, 9.9X 2012 EPS, reflects this view.
We have downgraded our long-term recommendation on Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) to Underperform. The leading supplier of automotive interiors, batteries and other control equipment is facing challenges from the softness in the global markets along with weak euro, which will affect its profitability. Pricing pressure from OEMs and strong competition also contributed towards the rating downgrade. The company is facing continued pricing pressure from OEMs due to their high levels of inventory. In addition, volatility in commodity prices of steel, aluminum, copper and fuel in the Building Efficiency business and lead in the Power Solutions business will impair the company’s profitability. Johnson Controls faces tough competition from major domestic and international manufacturers and distributors of lead-acid batteries in the North American, European and Asian markets. Its main competitors include Magna

We have upgraded the long-term (more than six months) recommendation on the shares of Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) to Neutral from Underperform due to its growing battery business, strong acquisition policy and long-term focus on emerging markets. The company’s battery business is set to grow globally from new hybrid wins, and the company is adding capacity to meet demand. Last year, the company invested $138.5 million to convert its battery plant near Toledo, Ohio into an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery facility, the first in the U.S., to manufacture Start-Stop and other batteries for high efficiency vehicles. Currently, Johnson Controls is the leading supplier of Start-Stop batteries in Europe through its VARTA brand. The company will be investing about $20 million for this expansion. The facility for expansion produces IONSIV™ Ion Exchange adsorbents, used for the removal of radioactive material from liquids. Honeywell’s UOP IONSIV™ Ion Exchange adsorbents are being used in Japan, following the 2011 nuclear disaster. With the facility expansion, the company will be able to produce new adsorbents and catalysts for petrochemical producers and refiners.
Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Honeywell International Inc. (HON) is focused on meeting the rising demand for low global warming material used in insulation and aerosols. Through a planned investment of $33 million in its Baton Rouge, La., manufacturing facility, the company will increase the production capabilities of such products. The Baton Rouge facility of Honeywell is a prominent provider of refrigerants in the U.S. Honeywell will be producing new low-global-warming-potential (GWP) blowing agent and propellant (technical name: HFO-1234ze) on a commercial scale from the upgraded facility. HFO-1234ze production is expected to start in late 2013. The Baton Rouge facility has been producing beneficial and energy efficient products for its clients for a long time. The investment enables the facility to become a prime provider of next generation technology for meeting low-global-warming aerosol propellants, foam

Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) announced that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of California-based EnergyConnect Group Inc. on July 1. The company purchased the company for $32.3 million. EnergyConnect Group Inc. provides demand-response services to the electricity grid. The demand-response programs offer incentives for curtailing consumption during periods of peak demand. The acquisition will boost the company’s Building Efficiency business as EnergyConnect’s technologies provide real-time pricing information that is used by commercial, institutional and industrial customers to manage their electricity consumption more efficiently. The blending of demand-response services with Johnson Controls’ building efficiency technologies will undoubtedly place the company among the market leaders. Wisconsin-based Johnson Controls is a supplier of automotive interiors, batteries, and other control equipment. The company functions through three segments: Automotive Experience, Building Efficiency and Power

Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) plans to invest $138.5 million to convert its battery plant near Toledo, Ohio into an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery facility. The AGM battery facility, the first in the U.S., will help the company manufacture Start-Stop and other batteries for high efficiency vehicles. The investment will expand the existing capacity of AGM batteries by 6 million units in North America. It will also add 50 jobs to the existing 400jobs at the plant. Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin this summer and the first line of production is expected in spring 2012. Start-Stop system is an emerging technology that saves power/fuel in battery/gasoline powered vehicles.
Markets on Monday slipped marginally amidst tight volumes as inflationary worries crept in, suggesting lower profits in the quarters ahead. However, positive economic data limited the losses and investors now await the first of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s four annual press conferences on Wednesday, which will decide the fate of the bond-purchase program. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) shed 0.21% and 0.16% to close at 12,479.88 and 1,335.25, respectively. Nonetheless, the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index gained 0.20% and finished the day at 2,825.88. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was up 7.4% and decliners outnumbered the advancers on the New York Stock Exchange. Easter Monday kept the shutters down on many markets and that led to significantly lower volumes. Consolidated volumes

TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. (TRW) announced the launch of a new vacuum sensor that will measure and report the level of vacuum in the brake booster. Brake boosters and master cylinders are integral parts of brake actuation systems produced by TRW. These brake actuation systems are typically used with traditional internal combustion engines that generate significant volumes of vacuum. The vacuum helps to amplify the brake force to increase the pressure of the brake fluid and actuate the brakes. The product, which is scheduled for launch in 2013, is expected to see substantial demand from vehicle owners because of reliable and flexible configuration, enhanced performance capability, packaging and lower pricing. Last month, TRW also announced an upgraded version of Electric Park Brake (EPB) system, that will enable users to enjoy
