With the backdrop of an industry-wide glut, ReneSola Ltd. (SOL) in the third quarter of 2011 incurred an adjusted loss per American Depositary Share (ADS) of 25 cents, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 18 cents. The quarterly loss also was way below the year-ago quarterly earnings of 70 cents. Operational Results In the reported quarter, ReneSola’s revenues fell 47.3% year over year to $189.1 million, short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $219 million. The decrease in revenues was driven by a decline in the average selling price (ASP) of solar wafers and modules. ReneSola’s product shipments were 328.5 MW versus 324.9 MW (up 11.2%) in the year-ago quarter. In the reported quarter, solar wafer and module shipments were 294.8 MW and 33.7 MW, respectively.
The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. The recent thaw in oil prices is casting a shadow over this emerging momentum. But even despite the pullback in oil prices, they still remain above historical levels. Nevertheless, we believe that a temporary oil price thaw will do limited, if any, damage to the emerging positive alternative energy narrative. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the projected U.S. refiner crude oil average acquisition cost will rise from $102 per barrel in 2011 to $108 per barrel in 2012. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued the economy in 2010. In the first half of 2011, the

Ltd. Under the agreement, MEMC Singapore and Jusung will combine forces to develop and maintain a high efficiency solar cell production facility for SunEdison (an MEMC subsidiary). Jusung Engineering supplies advanced technology and tools for the fabrication of solar photovoltaic cells. Both partners will have equal interests in the project and will shell out $16.0 million each as upfront cost. The facility will produce advanced solar cells featuring the latest technologies from both MEMC and Jusung. The combination of technologies will pull down the cost of making high efficiency solar cells. The companies expect the new facility to produce the first 100 megawatts of capacity

A leading provider of semiconductor and solar chips, MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (WFR) recently announced the termination of the solar wafer supply agreement between its Singapore unit and Suntech Power Holding Co. Ltd. (STP). MEMC will receive a handsome $120.0 million from Suntech for the termination. The original deal between MEMC Singapore Pte Ltd. and Suntech, the leading Chinese solar energy company, was struck in 2006. Per this 10-year deal, MEMC was required to supply solar wafers at a predetermined price. As an advance, Suntech deposited a certain security amount and allowed MEMC to take over up to a 4.99% stake in it. However, persistent downturn in polysilicon prices led the companies to amend the contract twice in 2009. Accordingly, prices were cut and volumes were raised. But as further

And for 2015, GTM predicts that solar installations will increase to 35,500 megawatts. Most of these installations will probably take place in China, according to a report released six months ago by a HSBC research team that traveled to China. In the report, HSBC said that the country was on track to outstrip its own aggressive government targets for clean energy, solar energy included, by 50 percent in 2015. By 2020, HSBC expects China to install about 20 gigawatts of solar power facilities. Solar Demand Wanes as Production Amps Up While interest in the solar industry is at a new

Under the extended agreement, MEMC Singapore and Flextronics will combine forces to fabricate solar panels for SunEdison, a subsidiary of MEMC. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The initial agreement, signed in December 2010, entailed production of MEMC-branded panels in the Flextronics’ Ontario facility. Each panel had an annual capacity of 50 megawatts. The panels also met a portion of the local demand emerging from Ontario’s Feed-in Tariff Program.
by David Fessler, Investment U’s Monday, May 9, 2011 I haven’t written much about solar recently, and for good reason: There really hasn’t been much to write about. Many U.S. solar panel companies have gone belly-up, like EPV Solar, whose intellectual property was purchased by New Millennium Solar Equipment Corporation. Others, like Evergreen Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR), have outsourced their manufacturing operations overseas. Even that hasn’t helped this struggling U.S. manufacturer, whose shares are trading for just over a $1. Still others have merged with or been bought out by larger competitors, like Advanced Solar. Running out of money, it was acquired in November of 2009 by Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT). Or OptiSolar, which was acquired for $400 million by First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) in March of 2009. But

The awful news out of Japan just seems to keep getting worse. There are now four reactors that are in trouble and significant (although outside the gates of the plant, not immediately dangerous) levels of radiation have been released into the atmosphere. That has severely strained the country’s electrical system (along with other damaged generating and transmission facilities), and there have been rolling blackouts across the country. Most of the factories in the country have been shut down, either due to direct damage or to save electricity. Clearly that is going to be a massive hit to the economy, and first quarter growth there is going to be negative. By how much is really anybody’s guess at this point. And while the economy is in recovery mode, so is our hope for the industry. The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, the global economic expansion remains on track.
OUTLOOK The Alternative Energy industry is going through a recovery after emerging from the global recession and the cascading fall in global crude oil prices. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track.
