The International Paper (IP) – Temple-Inland (TIN) merger has been delayed as both parties have agreed to extend the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) review period till February 13, 2012. The extended timeline will provide both parties the time to resolve DOJ’s concerns regarding the transaction and enter into a definitive agreement on terms that are acceptable to all. The DOJ approval remains the only hurdle in the creation of a company that would enjoy about 40% share of the North American corrugated packaging materials market. In December last year, the merger had been approved by more than 98% of Temple’s shareholders. For the full year 2011, the company expects pre-tax income in the range of $835 million to $845 million. Meanwhile, free cash flow from operations is expected to be $550 million for the year.
International Paper Co.’s (IP) third quarter EPS of $0.92 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company continues with its merger and acquisition strategy to strengthen its businesses. The merger with Temple-Inland will increase its share of the North American corrugated-packaging market from 27% to 40% and will be accretive to EPS in the first year. Further, International Paper’s acquisition of a 75% stake in Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills will help capitalize on the burgeoning demand for paper and packaging products in India. Furthermore, through its joint ventures, International Paper has significant projects underway in Russia and China. These will help the company sustain its earnings growth. We noticed the quarter’s estimates treading in a positive direction, and considering the past trends, we continue to believe another earnings beat is on the cards. Prior Quarter Recap IBM reported strong second quarter earnings and revenues that surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. While the rebound is more than welcome, it is still a very dismal rate of New Home sales. Offsetting the decline was an upward revision to the April numbers of 3,000 to 326,000. Thus relative to where we thought we were, it could be seen as a 1.2% decrease. The May level was, however, substantially better than the expected rate of 305,000. Still, the 12 lowest months on record (back to 1963) for New Home Sales, have all been in the last year.
Before the opening bell, FedEx Corporation (FDX), the world’s second-largest package delivery company, reported fourth quarter 2011 adjusted earnings of $1.75 per share. The quarter’s earnings outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3 cents and increased 32% from $1.33 earned in the year-ago quarter. Stronger results were aided by a higher fuel surcharge that offset the rising fuel prices. For fiscal 2011, FedEx reported adjusted earnings of $4.90 per share, up 30% from $3.76 in 2010. Total revenue climbed 12% year over year to $10.55 billion in the reported quarter and surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $10.36 billion. The outperformance was attributable to improved ground and international express shipments as well as strong yield initiatives. Further, the Freight segment returned to profitability during the quarter. Fiscal 2011 revenue increased

Such comments from the Federal Reserve Chairman kept the investors bearish as the markets suffered losses for the fifth consecutive trading day. Markets had been moving up initially but Bernanke’s comments ensured benchmarks extended their stay in the red, yet again. The markets have now declined for five consecutive trading day and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) lost 0.2% to settle at 12,070.81. While the rebound is more than welcome, it is still a very dismal rate of new home sales. In additional good news about the direction of new home sales, the February sales levels were revised up to an annual rate of 270,000 from 250,000. That is still the worst month on record, but not by as big a margin. Thus, relative to where we thought we were, it could be seen as a 20.0% increase.
Information Technology giant, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) is set to boost its cloud computing ambitions with the launch of its new computing service “Smart Cloud”. Smart Cloud offers cost-effective data analysis, supply chain management and sales management capabilities to big companies that incur significant IT costs related to these operations. The Smart Cloud would enable the companies to store their data on IBM’s servers and access it securely over the Internet. IBM’s sales pitch is focused on security and reliability, since the tech behemoth will be allowing the companies to configure resources to suit their own requirements for security, government compliance and backup. According to IBM, the Smart Cloud will enable it to differentiate its cloud services from the usage-based resources currently offered by its rivals Amazon Inc. (AMZN),

The broader Composite 20 City index (which includes the cities in the C-10) fell by 0.80% on the month and is up 0.55% from a year ago. In August, the year-over-year gains were 2.50% for the C-10 and 1.61% for the C-20, so it looks like the year-over-year gains are rolling over. Of the 20 cities, only one (Washington DC, and it was only up 0.05%) posted a gain on the month, while 19 saw prices fall. Year over year, five metro areas saw gains and 15 suffered losses. In August, there were also

New home sales in November rose by 5.5% from October, but that puts them at a dismal rate of 290,000. The percentage increase is a bit exaggerated as well, since the October numbers were revised down to 275,000 from 283,000. Thus relative to where we thought we were, the increase is more like 2.5%. The seven lowest months on record (back to 1963) for new home sales have all been in the last seven months.
FedEx Corporation (FDX) reported second quarter of fiscal 2011 financial results that fell below the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Quarterly adjusted EPS of $1.16 was below the Zacks Consensus Estimates of $1.31. Management cited higher fuel costs and the reinstatement of employee compensation and benefit expenditures as the primary reasons for the poor performance. Second quarter total revenue was $9,632 million. This was an improvement of 12% year over year, but well below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $9,749 million. We believe this was mainly due to slower-than-expected growth in international express deliveries. International air-shipment in some of the European countries reduced as a result of ongoing economic turmoil. GAAP net income in the reported quarter was $283 million or 89 cents per share compared to a net income of $345

After swinging back and forth for much of the session, stocks closed mostly in the red Wednesday amid concerns that the Fed’s planned purchase of Treasury bonds would not be as heavy and swift as earlier anticipated. Traders are eagerly awaiting a Federal Reserve move to inject more money into the economy by buying bonds. Expectations that the U.S. central bank would soon launch the asset purchases have fueled a rally in stocks. However, market participants are now concerned that the second round of quantitative easing would not be as big as has been expected. Those worries strengthened further after a Wall Street Journal report said yesterday that the Fed would buy no more than $200 billion worth of bonds and the purchases would be spread over several months.
In July, home prices started to slip again, but unevenly across the country. The Case-Schiller Composite 10 City index (C-10) rose 0.03% on a seasonally adjusted basis, and is up 4.01% from a year ago. The broader Composite 20 City index (which includes the cities in the C-10) fell by 0.13% on the month and is up 3.13% from a year ago. In June, the year-over-year gains were 5.02% for the C-10 and 4.22% for the C-20, so it looks like the year-over-year gains are rolling over. Of the 20 cities, only four posted gains on the month, while 16 saw prices fall. Year-over-year, 10 metro areas saw gains and 10 suffered losses. In June, 15 were up year over year and 5 were down.
