There are several factors that influence the decision of selecting an ETF for investment. Such factors include the past performance, holdings, sector exposure and concentration. Beyond these examples, expenses can also play an important role in the decision making process as well. The expense ratio of an asset fund refers to the total percentage of fund assets that are taken on a yearly basis to pay for administrative, management, advertising and all other costs that go into running an ETF. While these ratios are much smaller for ETFs than they are for mutual funds on average, investors should note that expenses still play a crucial role in determining the best fund in a segment. Furthermore, while many products may appear similar on the surface—with similar industry, holdings, and market cap

Over the last couple of weeks, investors have been hearing a lot about the Facebook IPO and the accompanying high-profile road show. For those who are confused, the road show is a planned set of meetings where the management team of the company going public, accompanied by its investment bankers, shares the investment merits of its about-to-be traded stock and why you, the investor, should buy in on the IPO. It is not about whether the CEO of said company is wearing a suit, or a “hoodie,” or will even show up at all. What’s challenging about the Facebook IPO isn’t whether this is a leading company in the new field of social media – oh, it certainly is. And it isn’t, in our opinion, about whether Facebook will continue

On January 22, 1984, Apple ran a television commercial introducing the Macintosh computer during the broadcast of Super Bowl XVIII. Inspired by George Orwell’s book 1984, a woman hurls a sledgehammer through a giant screen – in a fiery explosion – where a “Big Brother” figure is speaking to a bunch of nameless, unemotional faces. The takeaway was, of course, that IBM (NYSE: IBM) was taking over the world. Buying a Mac would show off your individuality and support of independent thought. That commercial was one of the most memorable and successful of all time. If the spot ran today, few would assume that the Big Brother character was IBM. A more logical assumption would be that it was Microsoft, Google, Facebook or, ironically, Apple itself. Fact is, to this

In recent times, BMC Software (BMC) is seeing growing demand for its private cloud enhancement services. The recent taker of BMC’s services is Japanese IT infrastructure provider Fujitsu FSAS. Fujitsu has deployed the BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite to consolidate its nationwide servers and restructure the company’s private cloud. FSAS had sprawling IT operations across 80 locations in Japan, which the company wanted to consolidate into its East and West divisions. The BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite has enabled Fujitsu to unify its operations across the two sites. Fujitsu FSAS initially approached Fujitsu Limited, a partnership concern of BMC Software, to provide a viable solution. BMC is increasingly making its presence felt in the cloud computing market. Apart from cloud computing, BMC is promoting its Remedy ITSM suite, and also struck a

A day after the benchmarks had their best run in nearly a month, insipid results from two tech-bellwethers and European economic concerns dragged the markets lower on Wednesday. Incidentally, benchmarks’ robust performance on Tuesday was largely boosted by the same fronts, except that corporate results came in strong and Europe had positive news to share about. Unfortunately, IBM and Intel’s results failed to lift investors’ sentiment yesterday, and bad loans of Spanish banks reached to the highest level since 1994. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) slumped 0.6% to close at 13,032.75. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was down 0.4% and finished yesterday’s trading session at 1,385.14. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 0.4% to sign off at 3,031.45. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) edged up by

We will have representation from the who’s who of the corporate world, with a number of bellwether players on tap to come out with results. By the end of the week, we will have a good enough number to judge this earnings season. While earnings will remain the primary focus during the week, we have a number of market-moving economic releases on deck as well. We will get a sense of the consumer economy though the monthly Retail Sales numbers, while the Industrial Production report will give us a good read on the manufacturing sector. The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) is investigating the allegations against IBM for its conduct in the Mainframe business. Some smaller companies in the banking, government and health care sector develop technologies that would allow the software to run on cheaper hardware.
Salesforce.com (CRM) continues to capture the headlines. The web-based software maker and a player in the “cloud computing” space now ventures into the business of selling accounting software in collaboration with a Dutch company. Salesforce has set up a company named FinancialForce.com in association with Unit 4 Agresso (UNI4), the parent company of financial software specialist CODA, that sells accounting software. Both the companies will invest in FinancialForce.com, which in turn will use CODA’s cloud accounting application previously known as CODA 2go and will deliver finance and accounting solutions in the cloud. This brings Salesforce to an area where the company has not ventured before.
