Dell Inc. (DELL) has introduced a family of servers specially targeted at the Small and Medium Business [SMB] segment. This is the eleventh generation of its PowerEdge servers and PowerVault NX300 storage servers. We believe that these cost-efficient products could help the company grab a share of the SMB market. The new PowerEdge servers are powered with Intel’s (INTC) Xeon 3400 processors needed to run business workloads with the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system. These servers have lifecycle controllers and an easy access design. They are empowered with various features that claim to reduce maintenance cost. The new PowerEdge servers come in T110, T310, R210 and R510 models and are available from September itself, starting at $599. This apart, in the Storage Server segment, the company introduced PowerVault

Texas Instruments (TXN) narrowed its third quarter revenue expectations to $2.73-$2.87 billion (a sequential increase of 9.7%-16.7%). Previous guidance was for revenue of $2.50-$2.80 billion (a sequential increase of 1.6%-13.8%). This effectively raises the mid-point of guidance by 5.7%. The company also expects earnings per share [EPS] to come in at 37 to 41 cents, compared to the previously guided range of 29 to 39 cents. Management stated on the call that the higher expectations were based on increased demand across all segments and particularly, the analog business. The main drivers within the high-performance category are HDD, PND and video games products. Power management products will benefit from the ongoing strength in notebooks, cell phones and other consumer products.
Moody’s senior analyst Ken Chan put Chartered Semiconductor’s (CHRT) speculative-grade Ba2 rating under review for a possible downgrade after Abu Dhabi’s nationalized investment firm, ATIC, proposed to buy the Singapore-based company for $1.8 billion. The acquisition would transfer the majority holding from Singapore investment agency, Temasek (Moody’s rating Aaa) to ATIC (Abu Dhabi’s sovereign rating Aa2). Analysts differed on how the acquisition would affect Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which had earlier united with ATIC to form Globalfoundries. Although Chartered and Globalfoundries will continue to operate as separate entities Incorporatedreased scale of operations could result in cost synergies. Since AMD includes Globalfoundries in its consolidated results, the deal could shorten its road to profitability. The deal would also open up Globalfoundries to several big customers, such as Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Broadcom

The company now expects third quarter sales to be flat-to-up 3% on a sequential basis compared to the previous guidance of sales being down 1% – 5% sequentially. Management expects a broad-based improvement across all market segments except telecom and wireless. Management had earlier expected a slowdown in communications equipment deployment in China and seasonality in the telecom and wireless markets. Nevertheless, the decline in telecom and wireless now appears to have moderated in contrast to management’s anticipation as a result of better-than-forecast demand from OEMs supplying to Asian wireless networks. Additionally, design wins for the company’s newly launched 40-nm products continue to be very strong. Management expects third quarter sales of 40-nm

The plan is to invest up to $2 billion into the country’s technology industry over the next five years. The decision was well-timed, as the company may be able to take advantage of the country’s economic turmoil that prompted the government to offer an $11 billion stimulus package in November last year. SkyLake is engaged in funding technology companies through contributions in the form of private equity investments. Its recent investments include Viatron Technologies, which is focused on heat processing technologies for displays; DASAN Networks, a subsidiary of Nokia Siemens Networks, which makes switching and fiber- to-the-home (FTTH) equipment; and Wemade Entertainment Co., which develops online games.
During the past 7 days, investors received 3 signs that the outlook for the semiconductor industry is improving. First, last Wednesday, Gartner Inc. raised its forecast for worldwide semiconductor sales. The consulting firm now expects a 17.1% decline, a huge improvement from its previous forecast for a 22.4% drop. Gartner credited lower prices on LCD TVs and computers as well as China’s stimulus package for helping the industry. Second, Intel (INTC) raised its third-quarter guidance. The chipmaker now anticipates third-quarter revenues at about $9 billion, versus its previous forecast of $8.5 billion. Gross margins are expected to be around 53%, with the projection likely being too conservative, rather than too pessimistic. Since Friday’s announcement, 22 out of 35 covering brokerage analysts have raised their 2009 profit projections for INTC. The

We believe this is a counter move by Nokia, a reply to computer manufacturers’ decision to enter the smart phone space. The netbook market is growing very fast and has number of players including Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Lenovo, Acer and Asus.
ANADIGICS, Inc. (ANAD) recently reported net sales of $31.5 million, up 3% sequentially but down 61% year over year in the second quarter of 2009. ANADIGICS designs and manufactures radio frequency integrated circuits (ICs) for the wireless and broadband markets. The company had earlier guided revenues to decline by 8% – 10% sequentially in the second quarter but the reported results beat management’s expectations. Both 3G and wireless LAN sales depicted strength. Purchases by LG continue to be steady and both Samsung and ZTE came in much stronger than anticipated. Despite inventory corrections by certain customers, revenue increased sequentially with LG Electronics, Samsung, ZTE, Cisco (CSCO) and Intel (INTC). The company regained some of its lost market share at Samsung. However, revenues from cable infrastructure declined but came in better

Hard times seem far from over for Dell (DELL). The company’s Chairman Michael Dell and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Rollins are encountering problems on all fronts. Trouble started with the Sony (SNE) laptop battery fiasco back in 2006, which prompted the company to recall over four million units. More recently, management decided to terminate its agreement with Intel (INTC) and use Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) chips instead. We believe this could impair consumer confidence, especially since rumblings of customer dissatisfaction are getting louder. Further, one of its most successful business strategies is also not working well. Dell used to attract clients by displaying cheap products on the company website. Customers browsing the website would end up spending an additional $2500 on PC accessories. This scenario is changing rapidly since PCs

Tony Daltorio, The Investment U Research Team The financial downturn and global recession has hit the semiconductor industry hard. Orders for microchips were almost non-existent at the end of 2008 as computers and mobile phones languished unsold on retailers’ shelves. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, global semiconductor sales fell 2.8 percent last year and are expected to fall a further 21.5 percent to $195.6 billion this year. Despite the positive reaction in the stock market to the latest sales figures from Intel (INTC),the world’s biggest chipmaker, the numbers were mixed at best. Intel did enjoy a sales revival driven by consumers buying cheaper, smaller netbooks, but revenues fell in Europe and sales in the key business customer area were weak. Let’s take a closer look at the semiconductor industry

Like many looking to get away from it all, I’ve been spending most of my summer Sundays at the movies. Too often, as I stroll in late, I find the theater is already packed. It’s not surprising. Entertainment often does well in economic downturns, leading many to call it “recession proof.” More correct, would be to call it “recession resistant.” The fact is, there are a number of movies and movie companies that are raking in the dough right now. U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner’s comments yesterday that the vast majority of U.S. banks are well capitalized failed to lift sentiments in Asia. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 407.44 points, or 2.7%, to 14,878.45, while Shanghai’s benchmark fell 74.48 points, or 2.9%, to 2,461.35 – registering its steepest one-day drop in two weeks. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 stock average edged up 15.97 points, or 0.2%, to 8,727.30, while South Korea’s Kospi added 1.4% to 1,356.02. Encouraging comments from Geithner yesterday pushed U.S. equity markets higher. The Treasury Secretary’s testimony on the Hill came amid a plethora of conflicting data, uncertain forecasts, and shifting political winds.
There is a maxim which states companies that spend more on development and advertising during economic downturns, rise become leaders when then markets turn around. And it’s true. Much of the reason behind this is that prices plummet during downturns: business investment – of any kind – can be done incredibly cheap compared to “normal” periods. Being a buyer when everyone else is selling has a simple benefit – you get great deals. Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) has been one of the most public in its business investments. Today it’s detailing how it will spend $7 billion over the next two years on new chip manufacturing and development in the United States. With the amount of companies announcing major layoff growing, thoughts of an economic “nuclear winter” start to creep into the discussion. Nuclear winter is often thought about as the consequences of nuclear weapons release and the resulting environmental impact. But its current reference is economic, and for good reason. Companies are remembering the lessons from the 2000 dotcom bust. Those that laid staff off quickly and severely were the ones who survived. Companies that waited, or that did smaller lay-offs, didn’t make it. Looking around at the

Cumulatively, that’s almost $156 billion less for the full year than 2007. These repurchase cutbacks give us a window into who’s healthy – and who’s not. Companies that buy back shares have higher profits and generally outperform those that do not. Firms worried about income or financing are going to be the first ones to cut back or suspend share buybacks. Surprisingly, the Information Technology sector accounts for 25% of all buybacks. While Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) took the top spot, energy companies only accounted for 18% of buybacks. That’s low, considering their record-breaking profits this year.
