However, the markets’ upward movement was subdued somewhat due to investors’ cautious attitude towards European debt crisis, tensions between the two Korean nations and apprehensions about the tax-cuts deal agreement. Nonetheless, the upward movement of the markets resulted in the indices gaining their two-year highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.35% to 11,410. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 0.60% to 1,240.40 and closed at its highest level since September 2008. The Nasdaq was up 0.80% to close at 2,637.54 and reached its highest level since end of 2007. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) rose above 17. On the New York Stock Exchange, the advance decline ratio was 2:1 and 4.5

European Central Bank’s assertion that it would not abandon its plan to buy government bonds helped contain eurozone worries, helping stocks extend their gains. (JNPR) is scheduled to announce its third quarter 2010 results on October 19 after market closes, and we do not see any variation in analyst estimates at this point. Second Quarter Overview Juniper reported modest second quarter 2010 numbers, with earnings per share of 22 cents (excluding one-time items, but including share-based compensation expenses) missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2 cents. Juniper reported second quarter 2010 of $978.3 million, an increase of 24% from the year-earlier quarter. The revenue upside was attributable to the strength in Juniper’s product sales.
Retail Sales were better than expected in September, and the numbers for August were revised significantly higher. Total retail sales rose 0.6%, better than the 0.4% consensus expectation and are up 7.3% from a year ago. August was revised up from 0.4% growth to 0.7% growth, which makes the overall level of retail sales much better than the consensus was expecting. The Retail Sales report covers far more than just the shopping malls and is a very broad based measure of consumer spending. Since consumer spending makes up 71% of the economy it is a very important number. That overstates things a bit since retail sales are mostly about the sale of goods, not services, and services make up two thirds of what consumers spend. Still, it is a pretty

Chemicals are used to make a wide variety of consumer goods besides being necessary in the agriculture, manufacturing, construction and services industries. The European Union and the U.S. house the world’s largest chemical companies. The entire US chemical industry is broadly divided into four segments — basic chemicals, life sciences, specialty chemicals and consumer products. While most of the larger companies operate in one or more of these segments, specialized operators in niche segments are also numerous. Of these, basic chemicals or commodity chemicals form the largest segment and includes products like polymers, petrochemicals, plastics and inorganic chemicals, as well as fertilizers.
October 14, 2010 The Federal Reserve continues to be the enemy of savers. The minutes of the September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, released earlier this week, signaled the possibility of new actions to bring long-term interest rates down further. Specifically, several committee members stated that if the pace of the economic recovery does not strengthen or if inflation does not intensify, “they would consider it appropriate to take action soon.” What could this action be? Most likely, it would involve the Fed purchasing more Treasury securities. Since bond yields are inversely related to bond prices, more demand for Treasuries should effectively drive down yields. The FOMC also considered providing some type of target rate for either inflation or nominal GDP. (A nominal rate includes the impact of inflation.

The blue-chip Dow industrials and the broader Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index dropped for the first time in five days even as the Commerce Department noted retail sales rose at their fastest rate in five months. After rising for four consecutive sessions, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 18 points, or 0.2%, to close at 10,526.49. The S&P 500 dropped less than a point, or 0.1%, to close at 1,121.10. The tech-heavy Nasdaq bucked the trend and edged up 4 points, or 0.2%, to 2,289.77.
Earlier today, Taiwanese regulators rejected American International Group Inc.’s (AIG) bid to sell its Taiwanese unit Nan Shan Life Insurance Co. to a Hong-Kong based consortium, according to Reuters. The $2.15 billion bid by the consortium, which comprises Primus Financial Holdings Ltd., a Chinese investment firm, and China Strategic Holding Ltd., a battery maker, was rejected citing political concerns in the country. The buyers can file an appeal to the Cabinet within 30 days. AIG had agreed to sell its Taiwan unit Nan Shan to the consortium in order to pay off its US government bailout money. The deal was earlier decided to be closed by July 2010. However, it got delayed by three months due to regulatory concerns in Taiwan such as the prohibition of Chinese investments in Taiwan

The deal, which according to some could be worth as much as $80 million, is expected to provide Cisco the necessary technology for delivering video over IP. ExtendMedia’s OpenCase suite (for managing, publishing and monetizing video across platforms) had a few big customers, such as AT&T Corp (T) and Bell Canada – a subsidiary of BCE Inc (BCE). However, further growth was limited by the non-availability of funds. Consequently, the buyout, which is currently expected to close in the first half of 2011 (subject to regulatory approval), comes at an opportune moment. Thanks to a booming local booming economy, Brazil’s two largest airlines – GOL Linhas Aereas ADR (NYSE: GOL) and TAM ADR (NYSE: TAM) – are doing quite well for themselves these days. Brazil will expand by 6.5% this year, and should grow by 4.5% in 2011. But more importantly, its middle class increased notably in 2009 to 53% of its 200 million citizens. Those kinds of numbers easily explain how TAM grew revenue-passenger-kilometers three times faster than even its host country’s fast-growing GDP over the last decade. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. According to IMS Health, this is the main reason global pharmaceutical market growth will be restricted to the mid-single digits (5-8%) through 2014. Over the next five years, products that currently generate more than $142 billion in sales are expected to face generic competition Incorporatedluding Lipitor, Plavix and Zyprexa. (JNPR) recently announced the launch of the Junos Pulse software, specially designed to maintain the same standard of security across a network, even when some of the connected devices such as cell phones or other mobile Internet devices are not under the control of the network administrator. With a rapid growth in the adoption of new technologies across mobile devices, creation of malicious codes has become commonplace Incorporatedreasing security threats for all. For example, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPad, which was launched in April, has already witnessed a security breach, as announced by its service provider AT&T Inc. (T) last week.
OUTLOOK The Alternative Energy industry is going through a recovery after emerging from the global recession and the cascading fall in global crude oil prices. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track. The outlook for the U.S. and key emerging markets remains positive. In the first quarter of fiscal 2010, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 3.2%, while sale of electricity to the industrial sector, per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Incorporatedreased by 2.7%
