Hospira Inc.’s (HSP) third quarter preliminary results were below expectations due to continued manufacturing problems at the company’s Rocky Mountain facility. The facility is expected to continue functioning below full capacity through the remainder of 2011. The additional costs for manufacturing remediation resulted in lost sales, inventory loss and lower service levels. In addition, management cut its 2011 adjusted earnings guidance to $2.95-$3.05 from $3.90-$4.00. We have slashed our 2011 earnings estimate from $3.93 to $3.01 and our 2012 estimates from $4.47 to $2.85, in line with management’s action. Moreover, the Symbiq and Plum pump issues remain matters of concern. We have, therefore, downgraded our rating on Hospira from Neutral to Underperform.
We recently reiterated a Neutral recommendation on The Medicines Company (MDCO), which carries a Zacks #3 Rank (short-term Hold rating). The Medicines Company reported a first-quarter profit of 60 cents per share, well above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 39 cents and the year-ago profit of 19 cents. Performance was boosted by higher revenues. Revenues, up 9.8% at $112.1 million, surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $110 million. The Medicines Company’s lead product, Angiomax (bivalirudin), is a specific and reversible direct thrombin inhibitor that was launched in early 2001. Despite the challenging economic scenario which has led to hospitals and patients cutting down on costly procedures, Angiomax sales in the first quarter of 2011 were up 9.7% year over year in the US.
Hospira Inc. (HSP) reported earnings per share of 93 cents for the first quarter of 2011, well above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 79 cents. Earnings benefited from strong US sales of the generic version of Sanofi Aventis’ (SNY) cancer drug Taxotere which was launched in March 2011. Results were however 1 cent below the year-earlier earnings of 94 cents due to difficult year-over-year comparisons. Earnings in the prior-year quarter were boosted by strong margin contribution from US sales of Hospira’s generic version of Sanofi’s Eloxatin (oxaliplatin) which has been temporarily discontinued. Higher research and development expenses also affected earnings in the quarter. First quarter revenues of $1 billion were almost flat year over year.
We recently reiterated our Outperform recommendation on The Medicines Company (MDCO). In August 2010, The Medicines Company received good news with the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia ordering the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) to treat The Medicines Company’s patent term extension application for lead product, Angiomax, as having been filed on a timely basis. The extension will provide exclusivity until August 13, 2011 (February 2012 including 6-month pediatric exclusivity). With the US Solicitor General and the Government deciding against appealing the Court’s ruling, a major overhang on The Medicines Company has been removed. Previously, we were expecting Angiomax to start facing generics from late 2010. But,

Excluding the impact of stock-based compensation expense, earnings came in at 18 cents. With the company yet to emerge from manufacturing problems, we were not surprised to see the dismal second quarter results. Second quarter revenues declined 12% to $1.08 billion, mainly due to restricted supplies of Cerezyme and Fabrazyme. Genzyme’s Personalized Genetic Health business was the most adversely affected by the temporary shutdown of the company’s Allston Landing facility in June 2009. The offer, which was supposed to expire on May 18, has been extended till June 2, 2010 as all the conditions of the deal have not yet been met. Viewing the uncertainty surrounding the closure of the deal, shares of Javelin Pharma plunged subsequent to the announcement. In April 2010, Hospira announced its intention to acquire Javelin for $2.20 per share or approximately $145 million. If the deal with Hospira does not get through, it will be a major setback for Javelin. In December 2009, Myriad Pharmaceuticals (MYRX) had decided to acquire Javelin in a stock-swap deal. However, Javelin decided to terminate this agreement in April 2010. The termination has resulted in Javelin paying $4.4 million to Myriad

Recently, Hospira (HSP) announced its intention to acquire Javelin Pharmaceuticals (JAV) for $2.20 per share or approximately $145 million. Hospira expects to initiate the tender offer for all the outstanding shares of Javelin shortly. The acquisition of Javelin will provide Hospira with access to Javelin’s lead product candidate, Dyloject, a post-operative pain management drug. The drug is awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A final decision is likely by October 3, 2010. As a non-opioid analgesic, Dyloject scores over traditional intravenous opioids, which are associated with significant adverse events in pain management. Hospira will gain global rights to Dyloject other than in Europe, where rights are licensed to a third party. Hospira plans to market the product in the US, Canada, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific

The data, which was published in the March edition of The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, revealed that ibuprofen was more effective than acetaminophen for the treatment of pain and fever. The newly published meta-analysis was based on 85 published studies that compared oral ibuprofen with oral acetaminophen for analgesic efficacy, antipyretic efficacy and safety in adult as well as pediatric populations. Cumberland stated that the data reinforced the findings from previously published studies on the efficacy of Caldolor injection for the treating pain and fever.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reinstated the previously suspended approval for Hospira’s (HSP) generic version of Eloxatin (chemotherapy agent), giving the company some relief for the time being. The Eloxatin issue has been in the news for the past few days ever since Hospira received the approval to launch its generic version of the drug, which is manufactured by French giant Sanofi-Aventis (SNY). Along with Hospira, the largest generics player Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA) also received the approval to sell its generic version of the drug. However, soon after granting approval, the FDA ordered both Teva and Hospira to stop shipment of the drug pending patent infringement litigation filed by Sanofi-Aventis against both the companies. Recently the court order was dissolved following which both Teva and Hospira resumed shipment

In a major setback for Hospira Inc., (HSP) the company had to stop the shipment of its generic version of chemotherapy drug Eloxatin (oxaliplatin), within a few days of receiving regulatory approval. Apart from Hospira, Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA), the largest generic player also received the approval to sell its generic version of Eloxatin, which is manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis (SNY). Eloxatin, meant for the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer and stage III colon cancer patients after surgery, recorded US sales of $1.4 billion in 2008. French giant, Sanofi-Aventis is suing both Hospira and Teva for patent infringement. Although in June 2009, a US District Court in New Jersey ruled in favor of Hospira and announced that the generic drug did not infringe the patent held by Sanofi-Aventis, the latter has appealed
