We are maintaining our Neutral recommendation on Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI) with a target price of $8.25. Human Genome, founded in 1992 and based in Rockville, Maryland, is a biopharmaceutical company. The US launch of Benlysta in March 2011 for treating patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was a huge positive for Human Genome. The subsequent launch of the drug in Canada and several European nations, including Germany, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Norway and Sweden is also encouraging. Benlysta, which has blockbuster potential, has been co-developed with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Benlysta is the first new lupus drug to be cleared in more than 50 years. Sales of the drug are growing, albeit slowly. Net sales of Benlysta improved 36.7% sequentially to $25.7 million in the final quarter of

With 2011 coming to an end, the pharmaceutical industry continues to face challenges like sluggish prescription trends, EU pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition, pipeline failures and limited late-stage catalysts. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. All these factors will lead to a slowdown in global pharmaceutical market growth in the next five years, with major revenue-generating drugs like Lipitor, Plavix, Lexapro and Zyprexa losing exclusivity. In fact, by the end of 2011, drugs worth more than a total of $30 billion will lose patent protection. This includes drugs like Lipitor, Zyprexa and Levaquin. The effect of the genericization of these products will be felt mostly in 2012, which will be a challenging year for several companies. At the

We are downgrading Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI) to Underperform from Neutral following the disappointing third quarter 2011 results reported by the company. The company suffered a wider-than-expected loss due to lower revenues. The most alarming factor was the below-par showing of Human Genome’s recently launched lupus drug, Benlysta. Following the lackluster showing, we have increased our loss per share estimates for 2011 and 2012. Moreover, management has pushed back its aim of turning profitable by a year to 2014. In view of these headwinds, we see little reason for investors to hold on to the stock at current levels. Our target price is $10.00.
Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI) received a huge boost when its potential blockbuster candidate Benlysta received a positive recommendation from an advisory panel of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Arthritis Advisory Committee voted 13-2 in favor of approving Benlysta for the treatment of patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In addition to asking the panel to discuss the efficacy data, the FDA had asked the panel to discuss the safety profile of the drug as well. The panel was asked to concentrate on the safety signals of infection, malignancy, suicidality, and mortality imbalance favoring placebo over Benlysta. Apart from that, the panel was also asked to weigh the risks of using Benlysta in combination with other immunosuppressive agents. A final decision from the FDA should be

Recently, Human Genome Sciences, Inc. Lupus, an inflammatory disease, causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues and organs. Benlysta, a human monoclonal antibody, is designed to suppress the body’s immune response to lupus. BLISS-76 is the second of two pivotal phase III trials in patients with active SLE.
Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (HGSI) is expected to report fourth quarter as well as fiscal 2009 results shortly. We expect that the company will report a loss of 10 cents per share for the fourth quarter of 2009 and 4 cents for fiscal 2009. However, we believe that the earnings report is basically a non-event for the company and will have little or no impact on the stock price. We feel that investors are more concerned about the progress of the company’s pipeline candidates, especially Benlysta. Human Genome boasts a robust pipeline with three late-stage candidates. Human Genome Sciences intends to seek approval for its potential blockbuster lupus drug candidate Benlysta during the second quarter of 2010 in the United States and Europe. We expect US approval in early 2011.

It’s a staggering statistic, just like the equally frightening claim that one in four people will end up with some type of cancer in their lifetimes… or that the disease affects 10 million people around the globe every year. Fortunately, doctors, research teams and entire corporations have set their brilliant minds to finding a viable cure. And they’ve made enormous strides in DNA profiling and the emerging field of pharmacogenomics – which studies how individual genetics affect medication outcomes. Human Genome and GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) are co-developing Benlysta for treating patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We remind investors that in Nov 2009, Benlysta met the primary end-point in BLISS-76, a pivotal phase III study, through 52 weeks. BLISS-76 is the second phase III trial in seropositive SLE patients. Complete 76-week data from the trial are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2010. Positive results from the first trial, BLISS-52, were announced in the third quarter of 2009.
Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (HGSI) recently announced the submission of a Marketing Authorization Application, [MAA], to the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) seeking marketing approval of Joulferon (albinterferon alfa-2b) for treating chronic hepatitis C patients. The application was submitted by Novartis (NVS) with whom Human Genome entered into an exclusive global agreement for the development and commercialization of the drug in 2006. The application for European approval includes data from two pivotal late-stage trials which showed that 900-mcg albinterferon alfa-2b dosed every two weeks met its primary endpoint of non-inferiority to peginterferon alfa-2a (Pegasys of Roche (RHHBY)) dosed once each week. The randomized, open-label, active-controlled, multi-center, non-inferiority studies, known as ACHIEVE 1 and ACHIEVE 2/3, evaluated albinterferon alfa-2b vs. peginterferon alfa-2a, in combination with ribavirin, for treating interferon-naïve patients with chronic

Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI) announced that it intends to sell up to 12.5 million shares to raise money for the development of its potential blockbuster lupus drug Benlysta and other business activities. The net proceeds from the public offering will be used for general corporate purposes, which include the acquisition of additional manufacturing capacity and development of new indications for Benlysta. The underwriters of the offering have a 30-day option to purchase another 1.9 million shares to cover over-allotments. Human Genome forecasted its operating expenses, after collaboration partner reimbursements, to increase from $250 million in 2009 to a range of about $325 million- $375 million in 2010. The increase is primarily attributable to the pre-launch manufacturing expenses associated with Benlysta coupled with increased sales and marketing expenses. As a

The agency issued a complete response letter wherein it asked for additional information in response to the Biologics License Application (BLA) filed in May 2009. The company intends to provide the agency with the requested information shortly. The agency’s decision comes weeks after an FDA advisory panel questioned the drug’s effectiveness when compared to existing anti-bacterial drugs since ABthrax was primarily tested in animals, not humans. The panel of experts voted 17 to 6, with one abstention, that the company should submit more evidence on whether adding ABthrax to older drugs is beneficial for anthrax treatment.
Recently, Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI) suffered a setback when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) questioned the efficacy of its drug ABthrax (raxibacumab), meant for treating anthrax infection. The FDA accepted that the medication was more effective than a placebo in treating anthrax exposure in animals. However, it was unsure as to how effective the treatment would be for humans since the reliability of human data is doubtful. Though the drug appeared to be effective when used with antibiotics in rabbits and monkeys, animal studies do not always predict success in humans. Later today, an advisory panel from the FDA is scheduled to meet to decide whether the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks for treating deadly infections caused by anthrax inhalation.
