Earnings Preview – Week of May 21st It will be a relatively quiet week on the earnings front, as there are only a few reports left before we close the books on the first quarter earnings season. This turned out to be a positive reporting season, with the growth rate, surprises and percentage of beats coming ahead of pre-season expectations. We will get reports from about 100 companies this week, including 17 companies in the S&P 500, which will take the complete tally of S&P 500 results to 495 by the end of the week. The economic calendar this week is on the light side as well, which means that headlines from Europe will likely continue to drive market activity on a day-to-day basis. We will get reports on New

Online social networking mogul Facebook (FB) is scheduled to start trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market today at around 11.00 a.m. Yesterday, its much-hyped initial public offering (IPO) yielded approximately $16 billion from 33 investment banks, led by Morgan Stanley (MS). Given Facebook’s size, the investment banks underwriting the issue are expected to charge as much as 3% of the proceeds as their commission. At the time of IPO filing, Facebook’s price band was $28 to $35 per share. However, earlier this week (May 15, 2012), Facebook raised the price range to $34 to $38 per share and the very next day (May 16, 2012) the company increased the size of the offering by 25% to 421 million, representing a 15% float. Facebook eventually priced its IPO at $38.00 per

Over the last couple of weeks, investors have been hearing a lot about the Facebook IPO and the accompanying high-profile road show. For those who are confused, the road show is a planned set of meetings where the management team of the company going public, accompanied by its investment bankers, shares the investment merits of its about-to-be traded stock and why you, the investor, should buy in on the IPO. It is not about whether the CEO of said company is wearing a suit, or a “hoodie,” or will even show up at all. What’s challenging about the Facebook IPO isn’t whether this is a leading company in the new field of social media – oh, it certainly is. And it isn’t, in our opinion, about whether Facebook will continue

On January 22, 1984, Apple ran a television commercial introducing the Macintosh computer during the broadcast of Super Bowl XVIII. Inspired by George Orwell’s book 1984, a woman hurls a sledgehammer through a giant screen – in a fiery explosion – where a “Big Brother” figure is speaking to a bunch of nameless, unemotional faces. The takeaway was, of course, that IBM (NYSE: IBM) was taking over the world. Buying a Mac would show off your individuality and support of independent thought. That commercial was one of the most memorable and successful of all time. If the spot ran today, few would assume that the Big Brother character was IBM. A more logical assumption would be that it was Microsoft, Google, Facebook or, ironically, Apple itself. Fact is, to this

In recent times, BMC Software (BMC) is seeing growing demand for its private cloud enhancement services. The recent taker of BMC’s services is Japanese IT infrastructure provider Fujitsu FSAS. Fujitsu has deployed the BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite to consolidate its nationwide servers and restructure the company’s private cloud. FSAS had sprawling IT operations across 80 locations in Japan, which the company wanted to consolidate into its East and West divisions. The BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite has enabled Fujitsu to unify its operations across the two sites. Fujitsu FSAS initially approached Fujitsu Limited, a partnership concern of BMC Software, to provide a viable solution. BMC is increasingly making its presence felt in the cloud computing market. Apart from cloud computing, BMC is promoting its Remedy ITSM suite, and also struck a

A day after the benchmarks had their best run in nearly a month, insipid results from two tech-bellwethers and European economic concerns dragged the markets lower on Wednesday. Incidentally, benchmarks’ robust performance on Tuesday was largely boosted by the same fronts, except that corporate results came in strong and Europe had positive news to share about. Unfortunately, IBM and Intel’s results failed to lift investors’ sentiment yesterday, and bad loans of Spanish banks reached to the highest level since 1994. HP has won a contract from the Runnymede Healthcare Centre in Canada, wherein the latter will deploy the HP Converged Infrastructure. The solution is expected to facilitate patient care and reduce IT administration time and costs. Runnymade Healthcare was earlier suffering from considerable network downtime with an outdated data infrastructure.
International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) is all set to report its fourth quarter and full year 2011 results on January 19, 2012, after the market closes. We expect IBM to report modest results due to sluggish IT spending partially offset by robust growth from its key growth initiatives. We note that IBM has posted an average earnings surprise of 1.86% in the trailing four quarters, implying that it has outdone the Zacks Consensus Estimate by the same magnitude for the last four quarters. We do not expect any major changes in the earnings trend pattern for the current quarter. Prior Quarter Recap IBM reported mixed third quarter 2011 results with earnings per share (EPS) surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 6 cents (2.0%) but revenues falling shy of the estimate

Gartner and IDC estimate 1.4% and 0.2% declines in worldwide PC shipments, respectively in the fourth quarter. Worldwide PC shipments for the fourth quarter were in the range of 92 million and 93 million, as per Gartner and IDC. The adjusted figures could be gathered from the PC makers, as the companies release their quarterly reports in the coming weeks. This decline in PC shipments is attributable to various factors, the most important of them being the growing popularity of the mobile devices that are more convenient, less expensive and almost as powerful as PCs. The Dow and S&P 500 registered their third-straight finish in the green, but trading volumes continued to be on the low side. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up 0.5% and ended the day at 12,169.65. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) gained 0.8% and closed yesterday’s trading session at 1,254. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index finished trading at 2,599.45, after edging up 0.8%. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) dropped 1.3% and settled at 21.16. Fortunately, the fear-gauge index has dropped to its lowest levels in many months, in an economic scenario that is highly uncertain and weighed down by lingering European debt woes.
by Chris Matthai, Investment U Research Tuesday, December 13, 2011 Individuals, businesses and governments are under attack… cyber attack. Collectively, we’ve never faced as many online threats as we do today. Why is so much hacking happening now? The answer is simple: More valuable information is stored online now than ever before and – at the same time – many organizations’ cyber security measures are still not up to snuff. And, unfortunately, our international competitors are taking full advantage of these shortcomings. An Onslaught of Foreign Intrusions According to a recent U.S. government report from the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive, government agencies and private companies are still failing to shield their networks from foreign hackers and illicit programmers. Financial details of the deal were not divulged. Use of personal devices in the workplace and access to corporate networks is common these days.
Tech major Dell Inc. (DELL) is looking to grow its share of the server market, something that could hurt Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) in the longer term. Dell missed its chance of becoming the leading PC shipment vendor after H-P’s PC segment spin-off was called off by current CEO Meg Whitman. The two companies saw their fortunes reverse in the last quarter, as Dell’s server business did much better than H-P’s. H-P has seen a few hurdles in the last few quarters. Even the recently concluded fourth quarter was lackluster. And now, we see H-P encountering another threat from its nearest competitor Dell. Both companies have excelled in developing servers that bring the graphics processing unit (GPU) into the data center or high-performance computers (HPC). However, while H-P has mostly concentrated

Rumor has it that Amazon.com (AMZN) will be launching a smartphone late next year. Well, may not be a rumor exactly, since the Citigroup (C) analyst reporting the development mentioned that his supply chain checks suggested that such a device was in fact being developed in collaboration with Foxconn International Holdings. However, the largest contract cellphone maker may not be the one to ultimately make the product for Amazon, which may rely on its tablet maker Hon Hai Precision for the purpose. The phone is expected to use Texas Instruments’ (TXN) OMAP 4 processor and Qualcomm (QCOM) baseband chips. The question that comes to mind is, what could Amazon possibly be thinking? The company is no more a smartphone maker than a tablet maker. So this is not its core

Revenue AMD’s revenues in the last quarter came in at $1.69 billion, up 7.4% and 4.4% from the previous and year-ago quarters, respectively. While supply constraints prevented the company from meeting its guidance of a 10% sequential increase (at the mid-point), revenues came in higher than consensus expectations of $1.65 billion. AMD clearly benefited from strength in its new products (Brazos and Llano). However, contrary to our expectations, it does not look as if the company was able to pick up share from archrival Intel Corp (INTC) mainly due to issues at Globalfoundries.
