Dell Inc. (DELL) has introduced a family of servers specially targeted at the Small and Medium Business [SMB] segment. This is the eleventh generation of its PowerEdge servers and PowerVault NX300 storage servers. We believe that these cost-efficient products could help the company grab a share of the SMB market. The new PowerEdge servers are powered with Intel’s (INTC) Xeon 3400 processors needed to run business workloads with the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system. These servers have lifecycle controllers and an easy access design. They are empowered with various features that claim to reduce maintenance cost. The new PowerEdge servers come in T110, T310, R210 and R510 models and are available from September itself, starting at $599. This apart, in the Storage Server segment, the company introduced PowerVault

The print App software is designed to work with HP’s high-end printers. To improve the speed and reduce cost of digital printing, the company had earlier unveiled graphic arts technologies and products to support its Print 2.0 strategy. HP’s Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web is already available in the market. The company is manufacturing commercial and specialty digital printers to work with the Photosmart and TouchSmart. Management also said that IBM was well on course to deliver earnings of $10 to $11 per share in 2010. With significant operating leverage, the company expects to continue expanding margins, helped by about $3.5 billion of savings from cost-cutting initiatives in 2009. Shares of the company rose in early trading hours to $118.18 after closing at $117.46 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. IBM expects to release third-quarter results on Oct. 15.
Several patents previously held by Microsoft (MSFT) are expected to change hands. Microsoft acquired the patents from Silicon Graphics and subsequently sold them to Allied Security Trust (AST) at a private auction. AST is expected to resell the patents to Open Invention Network (OIN). The patents purportedly relate to Linux open source technology, which is the reason for the interest in them. OIN consists of member companies such as RedHat (RHAT), International Business Machines (IBM), Phillips and Novell (NOVL), which use open source technology in their products. OIM licenses the patents but typically does not resell them. AST is in the business of acquiring patents from owners, licensing the technology back to them and ultimately selling off the patents. EMC is a leader in the storage hardware and software segment while Cisco is a leading provider of IP-based networking and other products. The Journal cited that the joint venture would provide data center services to large businesses and would use Cisco’s new blade server for data centers. However, both the companies declined to provide further details. EMC had agreements with Cisco earlier. The strategic alliance with Cisco in the data center and security business as well as enterprise market enables EMC to drive new growth opportunities within large virtualized next-gen data centers and help target the company’s next generation virtualization efforts. The financial or other details of the transaction were not disclosed. A Google spokesperson said that the deal was in the nature of a first step and agreements with other leading PC-makers are expected to follow. We think this is an interesting move and could be leveraged to boost sales of its Chrome operating system to be launched next year. Microsoft’s (MSFT) domination of the web browser space is largely attributable to its strategy of bundling the Internet Explorer with its operating system. Since MSFT operating systems continue to be the most commonly used, this is an obvious advantage. While Microsoft, being the market leader,

According to the agreement, Hewlett-Packard will be developing a system for AMR, which will take care of pricing, reservations, flight information and check-in. We believe this will improve the overall travel experience of American Airlines customers. This will specifically help the company in efficient baggage transfer, which will ultimately lead to lesser lost baggage, passengers getting updated information about cancelled or rescheduled flights and user-friendly check in process.
Both International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) have disclosed their U.S. federal and state lobbying expenses (Lobbying is the practice of influencing government decisions) and political expenditures from trade association in recent filings. California-based HP spent $790,000 (2.9% of total revenue) as lobbying fees to the State, Commerce and Treasury departments for domestic and foreign trade issues in the second quarter, up $340,000 from the comparable quarter last year. The issues dealt with included the dismissal of China’s plan to set up HP PCs with Internet filtering software in China. China withdrew the agreement after security personnel warned that it might infringe international trade rules. The costs also include charges on energy efficiency standards, immigration issues and tax laws. The second-quarter lobbying costs are a huge jump from

It would be wonderful if the conversation shifted to what changes can realistically be made and what changes should be made to prevent a worsening crisis. Here are some ideas, along with potential investment plays. Big Pharma Is Not Going Away Regardless of what you think about the drug companies, they are not going anywhere. The pharmaceutical lobby has made certain that it has a seat at the table and it seems probable that any new laws will benefit them. Even though some concessions will be made, the Obama Administration has quietly signaled a willingness not to pursue the most beneficial cost-saving

Tech Data Corp. (TECD) has declared encouraging financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2010. Total revenue was $5.2 billion compared to $6.2 billion in the prior-year quarter. However, this was above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5.04 billion. The year-over-year decline in sales is mainly attributable to the adverse movement of exchange rates of the U.S. dollar with respect to certain foreign currencies, as well as a challenging global economy that has resulted in a slowdown in IT spending. Net income in the second quarter of fiscal 2010 was $35.2 million compared to $22.1 million in the year-ago quarter. EPS in the same quarter was an income of 70 cents compared to an income of 42 cents in the prior-year quarter. This was significantly above the Zacks Consensus

The largest software company, Oracle Corp. (ORCL) announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has approved its proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA). The approval from the DOJ was much anticipated. In June, the DOJ had extended its investigation on the deal to gather more information and further review the effects of the merger on competition for International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), Oracle’s biggest database software rival, as well as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO), which compete with Sun in the server market. The clearance had earlier been delayed due to scrutiny about the licensing of Java, a programming language and software developed by Sun, which is used in IBM’s products. Moreover, issues lingered on Oracle’s potential acquisition of Sun’s MySQL – an open-source database software,

IBM generates over a billion dollars in revenue from the Indian market. Revenue at IBM was driven by double-digit growth in markets such as India and China, which were up 10.0% in 2008. Our rating is based on the following thesis: EMC holds a leadership position in the storage hardware and software segment. The information storage business is EMC’s largest segment (78.0% of fiscal 2008 revenue). The company has reasserted its market leadership in the important high-end storage product category with the recent launch of V-MAX, its new Symmetrix line. Moreover, the new V-MAX product could help EMC gain additional market share in the cloud computing space. Successive acquisitions have helped EMC build a strong portfolio of products, which provides tough competition to large software vendors.
The drivers behind our Outperform rating on International Business Machines (IBM) are the company’s strong fundamentals, substantial free cash flow, strong earnings momentum, improving operating performance, effective restructuring initiatives and new growth opportunities. IBM is the leader in software, services and storage business. Its second-quarter results beat the Zacks Consensus, fueled by higher gross margins and cost controls. With continued cost-cutting efforts, the company raised its 2009 profit guidance by 50 cents to $9.70 per share. Despite falling sales, IBM’s efforts to generate earnings through a combination of margin expansion, growth initiatives, acquisitions, expected benefits from retirement-related costs and effective capital deployment are commendable. IBM has been better insulated from the recent weakness in the U.S. economy than many of its peers owing to a large international revenue base. Moreover,

The deal has yet to clear legal formalities and financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. While the acquisition will enable Mphasis to enter the insurance sector, we doubt that it will have a significant impact on Hewlett-Packard’s credibility. AIG is one of the biggest insurance companies in the world, but lost face during the recent credit crisis and had to be bailed out by the U.S. government. Historically, acquisitions have always been a key growth strategy for HP. As part of its plan of expanding into growth markets and furthering its leadership in personal computing, the company acquired Neoware, Inc., a provider of thin

Hard times seem far from over for Dell (DELL). The company’s Chairman Michael Dell and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Rollins are encountering problems on all fronts. Trouble started with the Sony (SNE) laptop battery fiasco back in 2006, which prompted the company to recall over four million units. More recently, management decided to terminate its agreement with Intel (INTC) and use Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) chips instead. We believe this could impair consumer confidence, especially since rumblings of customer dissatisfaction are getting louder. Further, one of its most successful business strategies is also not working well. Dell used to attract clients by displaying cheap products on the company website. Customers browsing the website would end up spending an additional $2500 on PC accessories. This scenario is changing rapidly since PCs

Three former employees sued Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) for default in paying millions of dollars of commission to its sales force. It is believed that this is the result of faulty software Incorporatedapable of keeping an accurate record of commissions earned by respective employees. We believe this is an embarrassing development for a company of this stature, which may adversely affect its goodwill going forward. It is likely that the incident will spread a negative feeling among all employees, whether affected or not. Although the company has acknowledged the problem, it is of the opinion that the issue has been blown out of proportion. This lawsuit is particularly targeted at a computer program known as “Omega”, which HP started using after its acquisition of Compaq in 2002. The company declared that only a

Operating conditions for the printing business are getting increasingly challenging. The weakness is driven by both corporate and retail customers who are moving towards a paperless office, in order to reduce the cost of stationery. Research firm IDC projects the number of printed pages worldwide will decline to 1.47 trillion in 2009 from 1.50 trillion in 2008. As a result of this bleak outlook, printer manufacturing companies like Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Xerox (XRX) and Lexmark International (LXK) are transforming their printing business through new products with enhanced features. These new age printers, when linked to online services, enable direct access to data from websites, which can then be printed accordingly. The first all-in-one printers and copiers that came into existence a few years back included web-browsing capabilities. Later versions also included

Like many looking to get away from it all, I’ve been spending most of my summer Sundays at the movies. Too often, as I stroll in late, I find the theater is already packed. It’s not surprising. Entertainment often does well in economic downturns, leading many to call it “recession proof.” More correct, would be to call it “recession resistant.” The fact is, there are a number of movies and movie companies that are raking in the dough right now.
Repurchase Cutbacks Identify the Weak… and the Poor Standard & Poor’s just reported that third-quarter stock buybacks declined by almost 48% amongst S&P 500 firms. Cumulatively, that’s almost $156 billion less for the full year than 2007. These repurchase cutbacks give us a window into who’s healthy – and who’s not. Companies that buy back shares have higher profits and generally outperform those that do not. Firms worried about income or financing are going to be the first ones to cut back or suspend share buybacks. Surprisingly, the Information Technology sector accounts for 25% of all buybacks. While Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) took the top spot, energy companies only accounted for 18% of buybacks. That’s low, considering their record-breaking profits this year. Does this spell trouble for gas giants in
