Foreign banks have been facing difficulties non-stop since the latest financial crisis, which triggered off as a credit issue in the sub-prime enclave of the U.S. mortgage market in mid-2007, and spilled all over the globe. The latest deterrents –– nagging macroeconomic issues, the European sovereign debt crisis in particular, and regulatory pressure –– also resulted in the sector’s latest under-performance. Moreover, the upcoming quarters look even worse with several negatives like asset-quality troubles, weak revenue growth, steeper costs and weak loan demand. But thanks to the worldwide regulatory reform, the sector has at least entered a transformation phase. Needless to mention, a change is yet to be felt. The sector entered 2012 with a lot less momentum than anticipated. Rising concerns related to funding and limited access to market

The company is still exposed to threats related to higher cost of funds. Growing competition in the retail space with the re-entry of peers is an added future concern. Our six-month target price of $25.00 per ADS equates to about 22.3x our earnings estimate for fiscal 2012. This target price implies an expected negative total return of 7.6% over that period. This is consistent with our long-term Underperform recommendation on the ADSs. Additionally, the quantitative Zacks Rank for HDFC Bank is currently #5, indicating a significant likelihood of downward pressure on the ADSs over the near term.
HDFC Bank (HDB), like most Indian banks, are expected to encounter higher cost of funds as they have to raise deposit rates to meet increasing loan demand. This will keep margins of some banks including HDFC Bank under pressure. But as lending rates are expected to climb faster in the upcoming quarters, demand for loans would decline. On a price-to-book basis, HDFC Bank is trading at 3.8x, a sizeable premium to the 1.1x for the industry average. The valuation on a price-to-book basis looks expensive, given a trailing 12- month ROE that is only 9% above the industry average. Our six-month target price of $28.00 per ADS equates to about 23.1x our earnings estimate for fiscal 2012.
Backed by worldwide regulatory reform, the global banking industry is currently going through a transformation phase. Though the growth potential of some non-U.S. banks could be subdued due to higher reserve requirements, increased property taxes and strict lending limits as part of the regulatory overhaul, greater transparency in regulation could strengthen the fundamentals of many banks. Moreover, it is expected to create a less risky lane for the overall industry. Since 2010, the banking sector has been recovering at a moderate pace from the latest financial crisis that started as a credit issue in the subprime enclave of the U.S. mortgage market in mid-2007 and spilled all over the globe.
Aided by worldwide regulatory reform, the global banking industry has reached a phase of a transformation in 2011. Since 2010, the industry has been recovering at a moderate pace from the worst financial crisis in history that started as a credit issue in the subprime enclave of the U.S. mortgage market in mid-2007 and spilled over to every corner of the globe. Though the malice spread by the financial crisis is behind us, banks are now dealing with regulatory pressures now that they have been rescued by taxpayers’ money and government intervention. While non-U.S. banks are still facing liquidity and confidence challenges, government intervention to alleviate industry concerns have significantly raised political hurdles in the sector over time. Politics will continue to influence lending decisions of banks until they repay

On Thursday, markets registered modest upward movement. The blue chip index was led slightly lower primarily due to a weak forecast from DuPont (NYSE:DD), but the S&P 500 closed at its two year high, while Nasdaq moved to its highest level since December 2007. The major benchmark indices swayed on the back of forecasts and reports. DuPont’s (NYSE:DD) forecast of earnings for 2011 was below the Street estimates, and this somewhat led to the slight fall in the DJIA. The stock fell 1.14%. But the other key indices modestly advanced primarily based on reports that instilled optimism about the economy. The government’s count of weekly initial jobless claims was downsized to 421,000, and it bettered analysts’ expectation of 425,000. Investors took a positive stance, somewhat banking on this positive report
