The company has reinvigorated itself with a shift in focus from new square footage growth to maximization of productivity through its existing store base. In addition, the company has implemented significant changes to its store operations to make them simpler and more customer-friendly, thereby inducing more customer traffic. Driven by solid comparable sales growth and strong operating performance, the company’s reported earnings of 50 cents per share for fourth-quarter 2011, handily surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 42 cents and climbed nearly 39% from the prior-year quarter. Following better-than-expected fourth-quarter results, management anticipates 2012 diluted earnings per share to increase by 13% year over year to $2.79 (after share repurchases) on the back of

It was yet another choppy trading session for the benchmarks, which started on a low note and recovered after Apple announced a dividend payout and share buyback. By the closing bell, benchmarks had lost some ground and dropped from the day’s highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) edged up 0.05% and closed the day at 13,239.13.
Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc (ALNY) recently announced pre-clinical data from a trial evaluating its pipeline candidate ALN-HTT for the treatment of Huntington’s disease (HD). ALN-HTT is a novel therapeutic product that uses the potentially revolutionary RNA (ribo nucleic acid) interference (RNAi) technology. The data showed broad central nervous system (CNS) distribution and robust therapeutic silencing of the gene responsible for Huntington’s disease. Further, ALN-HTT was well tolerated in these studies. ALN-HTT is being developed in collaboration with Medtronic, Inc. (MDT) and the CHDI Foundation. Alnylam expects to file an investigational new drug application (IND) application for the candidate in 2012. Approval of the IND by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) will allow the candidate to enter early stage clinical trials. Besides ALN-HTT, Alnylam is developing ALN-RSV01 for the treatment

Customers buying goods from Walmart Inc. (WMT) can heave a sigh of relief as the world’s biggest retailer teams up with online giant Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) to eliminate cumbersome packaging by manufacturers. The two retail giants are also pushing other biggies like Procter & Gamble Company (PG) to design user-friendly packaging materials and do away with nearly impenetrable plastic packaging, known as clamshells. These clamshell packages use excessive amounts of harmful plastic such as polyvinyl chloride. In order to make the packages tamper-resistant and also enable adequate display of the contents, manufacturers are often driven to packages that are difficult to open and come with excess packing materials, wire ties and plastic bindings.
Recently, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ALNY) announced the commencement of an early-stage stage study (n~32) of its RNAi (RNA (Ribo Nucleic Acid) interference) therapeutic program ALN-PCS for treating patients suffering from hypercholesterolemia. Hypercholesterolemia indicates a situation where the cholesterol levels in the blood are higher than normal. The randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, single-ascending dose study intends to evaluate the safety and tolerability of the candidate in patients suffering from high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc or “bad” cholesterol). Moreover, the clinical activity of ALN-PCS is also expected to be assessed through the study on the basis of measurements of plasma PCSK9 protein and serum LDLc. Results from the study, which is being conducted in the UK, are expected by year end. ALN-PCS is a part of Alnylam’s core product strategy – 5×15 introduced

The company is the fourth largest broadline retailer in the U.S. offering home appliances, tools, lawn and garden equipment, electronics, automotive repair and maintenance products through a countrywide network of over 4,000 retail stores. Sears Holdings disappoints with its overall second-quarter 2011 results. The company’s adjusted loss of $1.13 per share was well above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 64 cents per share while widening drastically from the prior-year quarter loss of 19 cents per share, primarily due to the sluggish top-line performance. Management is still continuing with its cost-cutting measures for boosting profits, which were largely criticized in the first quarter of fiscal 2011, as improving the merchandise mix and customer service would have

Stocks will likely be unable to sustain the three-day rally of sorts as the reality of economic growth uncertainty comes back to center stage. We have a number of reports out this morning that highlight the lack of economic growth, not just here in the U.S., but also in Europe. We have known about Europe’s debt problems for awhile, but this morning brought in a weaker-than-expected report about EuroZone’s GDP growth in the second quarter. German economic growth was barely in the positive column, while France had no growth at all. The sharp slowdown from the first quarter’s growth pace raises questions about the interest rate hikes implemented by the European Central Bank recently. Lack of growth makes it difficult for European leaders to tackle the common market’s escalating debt

Lowe’s Companies Inc. (LOW), the world’s second largest home improvement retailer, is scheduled to report its second-quarter 2011 financial results on Monday, August 15, 2011. The current Zacks Consensus Estimate for the quarter is 67 cents a share. For the quarter under review, revenue is $14,743 million, according to the Zacks Consensus Estimate. First-Quarter 2011, a Synopsis On May 16, 2011, Lowe’s posted lower-than-expected first-quarter 2011 results, reflecting sluggish economic recovery and difficult comparison on account of government stimulus programs that benefited the prior-year quarter. Some stocks have been excessively volatile. Take Mastercard (MA), for instance. Shares of MA fell 10.6% on Monday, rebounded 10.6% on Tuesday and fell 5.9% on Wednesday.
We reiterate our Underperform recommendation on Masco Corporation (MAS), which manufactures, sells, and installs home improvement and building products. The company earns 75-80% of revenues from the operations in North America, primarily in the U.S., while its international operations are located principally in Belgium, China, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the U.K. The company’s principal customer Home Depot, buys approximately 20%-30% of its production. Masco recently reported its fiscal first quarter results delivering a loss of 5 cents per share in stark contrast to a profit of $0.03 per share during the year-earlier quarter. The company’s loss was broader than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 3 cents. It was attributed to poor North American sales during the quarter, partially due to expiration of home buyer tax credit

Central Garden & Pet Company (CENT), the leading producer of garden and pet supplies products in the U.S., recently announced a new $100.0 million share buyback program. Share buybacks reflects the company’s sound financial position and well-defined future prospects. The signs of recovery in the economy have made share buybacks and dividend increases a common factor among companies sitting on extra cash. These strategies enhance shareholders’ return and boost the market value of the stock. The newly announced program would take place through open market or private transactions. As I started writing this on Thursday morning, iShares Silver Trust ETF (SLV) was down by 5.7%. Though significant by itself, the decline was just the latest in what has been a very bad month for SLV shareholders. Since the start of May, the ETF has fallen from $46.88 to this morning’s $32.42, a drop of nearly 31%. The drop is even worse when you consider that SLV hit an intraday high of $48.35 on April 28. Chart courtesy of FreeStockCharts.com Notice the volume bars at the bottom of the chart. Interest in the ETF has surged over the past six weeks. Any time a security jumps in price on

Retail Sales were slightly below expectations for March. Total retail sales rose 0.4%, and are up 7.1% from a year ago. The consensus of forecasters was looking for a rise of 0.5%. However, February was revised up from 1.0% growth to 1.1% growth, which more or less offsets the miss. The Retail Sales report covers far more than just the shopping malls; it is a very broad-based measure of consumer spending. Since consumer spending makes up 71% of the economy it is a very important number. That overstates things a bit since retail sales are mostly about the sale of goods, not services — and services make up two thirds of what consumers spend — but still, it is a pretty important thing to watch. Auto Sales Drag Auto sales

Consumer spending edged ahead while inflation soared to hit new highs post June 2009. Investors’ apprehension against betting big bucks was highlighted as volumes touched their lowest levels for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial average sank 0.2% and closed at 12,197.88. The Standard & Poor 500 and Nasdaq shed 0.3% and 0.5% to finish the day at 1,310.19 and 2,730.68, respectively. Geopolitical concerns kept investors’ fears about volatility alive with only 5.9 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the lowest volumes till date for 2011. Unrest in the Middle East and North Africa continued as immediately after the overthrow of leaders in Egypt and Tunisia, demonstrators in Bahrain, Libya and Algeria put forward similar demands. Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa and Bahrain is next only to Saudi Arabia when it comes to oil reserves. The situation has sparked concern over oil prices and crude prices surged to their highest level in 2.5 years. The trend of rising markets now seems to be suffering a setback. On Tuesday, the Dow fell 1.44% and closed at 12,212.79. The S&P 500 was down 2.05% to 1,315.44 and the Nasdaq closed at 2,756.44,

The company’s loss was broader than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 2 cents per share. Operating loss widened to $798 million from $197 million a year ago. Masco’s results clearly reflect the challenging market conditions, including expiration of the home buyer tax credit, higher commodity costs and the competitive environment. The rally was led by material and energy shares. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped almost 250 points, or 2.3%, closing the day at 11255.85. The gains, biggest since early September, came on reports that private sector employers continued to add jobs in November. A big revision to October’s private sector payroll numbers and reports of improved economic activity in 10 of the 12 Fed regions boosted investors’ belief that the economy is beginning to strengthen. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index advanced 25.52 points, or 2.2%, to 1206.07. The technology-laden Nasdaq

The broader S&P’s 500-stock index climbed more than 9 points, or nearly 0.8%, to 1193.57 and the technology-focused Nasdaq rose more than 28 points, or 1.1%, to 2533.52.
