Major oilfield services provider Halliburton Co. (HAL) is set to release its first-quarter 2013 results before the opening bell on Monday, Apr 22. In the preceding three-month period, Halliburton delivered a positive 3.28% earnings surprise – the third outperformance in the last 4 quarters – helped by robust performance from its international business. Let’s see how things are shaping up prior to this announcement. Factors to Consider This Quarter With some relief in the cost for guar gum – a key constituent of the company’s market-leading hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’) procedure – Halliburton expects its North American margins to stage a partial recovery. However, utilization and pricing pressures in the region will continue to affect the bellwether’s profitability More alarmingly, with the quarterly domestic land rig count falling by some 3%

A recent Barron’s article was very positive about banks in 2013. They expect healthy growth from capital markets, corporate lending and deposits. And the existing catalysts of housing and the labor market to continue to push earnings higher. The article listed the EU and the US regulatory environment as the reasons for a recent slump in consumer confidence and the slowdown in bank stocks. But they are confident earnings growth will continue through the fourth quarter, supported by improving credit quality, loan growth, and better expense control. The keys going forward, and where your focus should be to track this segment of the market, are the housing recovery and the improving jobs numbers. Both will run through to the banks and will drive their bottom lines. The basket of stocks

On Jan 31, we reaffirmed our Neutral recommendation on the leading oilfield services company Schlumberger Limited (SLB), following its fourth quarter results. The company’s strong performances in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) region, its international reach and diverse product offerings were offset by weak performance in Europe/CIS/Africa and Middle East & Asia. Why the Reiteration? The company reported its fourth quarter financial results on Jan 18. Adjusted earnings of $1.08 per share came in line with our expectation but decreased 1.8% from the year-earlier quarter. Although hydraulic fracturing pricing and land drilling activity remain depressed throughout North America, outperformance in the GoM helped the offshore business. It posted a 24% sequential rise in revenues in the GoM bolstered by rising deepwater rig activity and a seasonal rise in year-end, multi-client

Possibilities that Spain would have to seek a sovereign bailout and a record jump in the nation’s borrowing costs dragged the US markets lower. The return of the European concerns resulted in the Dow’s second-consecutive triple digit loss; the first one since April 10. Separately, an earnings miss by McDonald’s was an additional concern and the fast-food chain was the biggest laggard in the Dow. However, the benchmarks pared some losses at a later stage. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) plunged 101.11 points or 0.8% to close at 12,721.46. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) dropped 0.9% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,350.52. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index lost 1.2% and was down to 2,890.15. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) jumped 14.45 and settled at 18.62.

By the closing bell, the energy sector had dented the S&P 500, while investors’ apprehensions about Hewlett-Packard’s decision of merging its printing and personal computing businesses dragged down the Dow. However, tech shares boosted the Nasdaq into the positive zone. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 0.3% to settle at 13,124.62. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) edged down 0.2% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,402.89. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index was the only gainer among the other benchmarks and moved up by 0.04% to settle at 3,075.32. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was down 2.9% and finished at 15.13. Total volumes on the New York

It was the “super spike” in the price of oil which called for prices to dramatically increase from the $115 level to an unthinkable $150-$200 a barrel. We will leave the details of Iran or supply and demand out of this discussion and focus on how we can best position our

Partly offsetting this favorable view has been high U.S. crude stocks and worries about China’s growth outlook. As such, crude oil’s near-term fundamentals remain mixed, to say the least. The long-term outlook for oil, however, remains favorable given the commodity’s constrained supply picture. In particular, while the Western economies exhibit sluggish growth prospects, global oil consumption is expected to get a boost from continued strength in the major emerging powers like India, China and Brazil that continue to grow at a healthy rate. However, this is largely seen as a one-off shot, with warmer-than-normal temperatures across the country restricting the commodity’s requirement for power burn. In fact, gas stocks – currently 21.4% above the 5-year average and 20.7% higher than the same period last year – are at their highest level for this time of the year, reflecting low demand amid robust onshore output.
