Garmin Ltd (GRMN), the maker of portable navigation devices, has opened offices in Shanghai, China; Stuttgart, Germany; and Yokohama, Japan. The idea is to get closer to all the major auto manufacturing markets of the world to sell built-in devices for automobiles including navigation, telematics and infotainment. Garmin has been the most celebrated supplier of personal navigation devices (PND) that were largely used in automobiles. However, the incorporation of navigation into smartphones started to eat away its core market. Garmin tried to enter the smartphone market itself, but given the stiff competition from stalwarts like Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) through devices from LG, HTC and Samsung, and Research In Motion (RIMM), Garmin could not create a niche for itself. Others in the space were increasingly selling navigation as software for

Garmin Ltd. (GRMN) is an OEM of GPS-based equipment. September quarter earnings thrashed the Zacks Consensus Estimate and 2011 guidance was raised. Garmin s market share, brand equity, compelling new products across segments, significant diversification of revenue, strategic alliances and financial position may be expected to offset the negative impact of a secular decline in its core PND business. We are buyers of the shares at the current valuation, since we believe that Garmin has the position and financial muscle to overcome the fierce competition, pricing pressure and PND cannibalization by smartphones. Garmin’s current trailing 12-month earnings multiple is 14.0X, compared to the 16.2X average for the peer group and 17.0X for the S&P 500. We note that Garmin’s expected earnings growth rate of 15.0% over the next 5 years

Garmin Ltd (GRMN), one of the leading providers of navigation devices into the outdoor/fitness, aviation, marine and automotive markets recently beefed up its business in Europe. Garmin announced the acquisition of European navigation device provider Navigon AG, 90% of which is owned by private equity firm General Atlantic Partners. Although Garmin did not announce the price, a German daily reported in early June that Garmin offered 50 million euros ($72.14 million) for the company. Navigon brings several advantages to Garmin. The most obvious of these is its relationships with mobile phone, automotive and consumer electronics OEMs. Garmin could leverage on these relationships to grow its position in Europe. Navigon has very popular mobile apps for Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc’s (GOOG) Android-based phones in both Europe and North

Earnings were up 52% from the year-ago quarter. Revenue Revenue of $431 million was down 59.3% sequentially and 1.3% year over year. The decline from the year-ago quarter was related to a 1.3% decline in the blended ASP (average sale price), as volumes stayed essentially flat. The sequential decline was mainly on account of the every strong fourth quarter, which typically generates over 30% of total revenue for the year. The revenue decline was more pronounced in North America and Europe, which are the regions that experience particular holiday-driven strength in the Dec quarter. Moreover, PND adoption in Asia remains encouraging. North

Revenue Revenue of $1.06 billion was up 35.6% sequentially and 1.1% year over year. This was the first year-over-year increase in five quarters. Volumes were up a whopping 71.2%, driven by seasonality, although the ASP declined 20.8%, mainly due to pricing pressures in Garmin’s core PND product family. The ASP also declined 3.2% from the year-ago quarter, but this was offset by a 4.4% increase in volumes. Strength was broad-based across geographies, although North America witnessed the strongest growth.
by Louis Basenese, Small Cap and Special Situations Expert Thursday, December 10, 2009: Issue #1155 “Never lose money.” That’s Warren Buffett’s No. 1 rule of investing. And after a 62% run-up for the S&P 500 from its March 9 low, I suggest you make it your top rule, too. Why? Because I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that more than a few stocks – including ones in your portfolio – have overshot the mark and are destined to take a tumble in the year ahead. And I’ve honed in on a chosen few that boast particularly terrible fundamentals. If you own them, I suggest you take profits and switch to a short position. Whatever you do, just don’t buy them in 2010. So without further ado, let’s get to this

We have been observing personal navigation device (PND) makers for some time now and one has to admit that they are coming under increasing pressure. The portable navigation market includes archrivals Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom, as well as other smaller players, such MiTAC Digital and Navigon. Since navigation products are given to commoditization, there has always been significant pressure on prices. However, the more immediate threat is Google (GOOG), which intends to add free turn-by-turn directions to the Google Maps app for smartphones using its Android operating system. The concept of adding navigation to phones is not new—Nokia (NOK) made its intentions clear last year, when the company acquired Navteq for a lofty $8.1 billion. Navigation is increasingly becoming a part of all smartphones, adding to the competition for the

On the other hand, comScore (SCOR) expects online retail sales to be up 3% in November and December. The online retail segment is still a very small portion of the retail market (only 7% of total retail sales according to Forrester Research). However, there is good reason to believe that the segment will continue to grow into a larger share of total retail sales. While online retail companies, such as Amazon.com (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY) have been around for a while, the number of traditional retailers exploring the area continues to grow. This time, it seems that Google is trying to kill stand-alone GPS navigation devices – and the companies that make them. The rumor that the firm might offer turn-by-turn GPS navigation has just turned into reality, as the tech giant has brought the feature to all its Android 2.0 devices. For free. And the effect this has had on shares of GPS firms is notable… GPS Stalwarts Crushed As Google Crashes the Party On Wednesday (October 28), both Garmin (Nasdaq: GRMN) and fellow GPS provider TomTom saw their plunge by 16% and 20% respectively.
AT&T (T) announced the launch date of Garmin Ltd.‘s (GRMN) long-awaited GPS smartphone yesterday. The second-largest US carrier will be the exclusive distributor of the device (called “nuvifone G60″) in the US starting Oct 4, 2009. This will end a more than year-and-a-half delay in the device’s US market launch, and also marks Garmin’s first foray into the US smartphone market. The touch-screen based nuvifone G60 will be sold at AT&T’s stores and online for $299, after a $100 rebate and with a two-year service contract.
Garmin (GRMN) recently launched a new connected portable navigation device (PND), nuvi 1690, with several robust features. AT&T(T) will be its wireless network partner for the device. The product is expected to ship in the fourth quarter, which should enable the company to make the most of the holiday season. According to iSuppli, connected PNDs are likely to grow from around 3% in the North American market in 2008 to around 15% in 2010 and constitute half of all PNDs by 2013. Therefore, the new device is targeted at an important growth segment. Garmin’s nuLink service enables the user to connect to Google (GOOG) Local, which provides localized information on traffic, weather, fuel prices, movie listings, flight status, local events and even telephone listings. The service includes Garmin’s patent-pending Ciao,

Garmin (GRMN) is an OEM of GPS-based equipment. June quarter results were much better than consensus expectations, signaling an end to the downturn. The strong revenue and margin performance in the recently concluded quarter, the company s market share, brand equity, financial position, compelling new products and management history of execution are encouraging factors. Although the near-term outlook is cloudy and competition remains fierce, we continue to believe that the company will perform better than peers. Consequently, we are reiterating our Outperform recommendation on Garmin shares. Zacks Investment Research View original at: Zacks.com News Feed

A Garmin Ltd. (GRMN) spokesperson announced that the company had selected a carrier for the nuvifone G6, its new smartphone. Although the name of the carrier was not announced, rumor has it that it could be AT&T (T), the second-largest player in the U.S. The product will be manufactured by Taiwanese PC manufacturer Asustuk. Garmin expects the product to generate $100-200 million in revenue this year, which would add an incremental 4% to the top line. This means that Garmin would still be short of the one million unit mark this year. Although the company’s small size and vulnerability in the intensely competitive market could delay initial customer response, Asus is geared to crossing the million unit threshold in 2010.
