Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) let us know last Tuesday that once again the company knocked it out the park. It had an unbelievable second quarter in 2012, largely due to strong iPhone sales – again. Analysts last month tried to read between the lines on earnings reports from Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T), and figured there would be lower iPhones unit sales. The stock got pretty beat up for week. However, Apple showed that iPhone distribution isn’t a two-trick pony. I’m certainly bullish on Apple, but I also don’t want to tie up all the money it takes to acquire shares in the $600-range. Below I’ll show you a more affordable way to play Apple’s expected growth, but first let me show you why I’m so confident in the

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

The mid-Atlantic region witnessed its first drop in manufacturing activity in eight months and the outlook for US economic growth showed a declining trend for the first time in six months. With these concerns sinking the benchmarks, the Dow suffered its 11th decline in the past 12 sessions and ended at its lowest level since January this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 1.2% and ended significantly lower at 12,442.49. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) slumped 1.5% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,304.86. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index crashed 2.1% and closed at

Online social networking mogul Facebook (FB) is scheduled to start trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market today at around 11.00 a.m. Yesterday, its much-hyped initial public offering (IPO) yielded approximately $16 billion from 33 investment banks, led by Morgan Stanley (MS). Given Facebook’s size, the investment banks underwriting the issue are expected to charge as much as 3% of the proceeds as their commission. At the time of IPO filing, Facebook’s price band was $28 to $35 per share. However, earlier this week (May 15, 2012), Facebook raised the price range to $34 to $38 per share and the very next day (May 16, 2012) the company increased the size of the offering by 25% to 421 million, representing a 15% float. Facebook eventually priced its IPO at $38.00 per

Over the last couple of weeks, investors have been hearing a lot about the Facebook IPO and the accompanying high-profile road show. For those who are confused, the road show is a planned set of meetings where the management team of the company going public, accompanied by its investment bankers, shares the investment merits of its about-to-be traded stock and why you, the investor, should buy in on the IPO. It is not about whether the CEO of said company is wearing a suit, or a “hoodie,” or will even show up at all. What’s challenging about the Facebook IPO isn’t whether this is a leading company in the new field of social media – oh, it certainly is. And it isn’t, in our opinion, about whether Facebook will continue

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is scheduled to report its first quarter fiscal 2012 results on April 26, 2012. We witness both downward and upward movements in analyst estimates in the build-up to the release. Prior-Quarter Synopsis Amazon reported weak fourth-quarter revenue, but earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 24 cents, or 150%, on improved operating margins and a lower share count. The company reported revenues of $17.43 billion, up 60.3% sequentially and 34.6% year over year (in the middle of management’s guided range but missing Consensus expectations by around 4.3%). Key strategies for driving revenue growth were competitive pricing, free shipping, user experience on Amazon properties and the Amazon Prime program. The gross margin shrunk 280 bps sequentially to 20.7%, but was up 34 bps from the year-ago quarter. The

(T), the second largest mobile service provider in the U.S., reported first quarter 2012 adjusted earnings of 60 cents per share, surpassing both the Zacks Consensus Estimate and the year-ago earnings by 3 cents. The company made a strong start to the year, with mid-single-digit growth in operating income and earnings. Lower sales of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone during the quarter helped it to cut expenses that resulted in more profits but hurt subscriber growth to some extent. Further, the out performance was attributable to the healthy wireless and wireline businesses. Revenue grew 1.8% year over year to $31.82 billion, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $31.81 billion. Improved performance in the quarter was mainly driven by continued 4G mobile broadband sales, strong wireless network performance and improved

The idea is to get closer to all the major auto manufacturing markets of the world to sell built-in devices for automobiles including navigation, telematics and infotainment. Garmin has been the most celebrated supplier of personal navigation devices (PND) that were largely used in automobiles. However, the incorporation of navigation into smartphones started to eat away its core market. Garmin tried to enter the smartphone market itself, but given the stiff competition from stalwarts like Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) through devices from LG, HTC and Samsung, and Research In Motion (RIMM), Garmin could not create a niche for itself.
We reaffirm our Underperform recommendation on Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM). The company is in a complete mess. Revenue and net income plunged in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012, future financial outlook is grim, and the stock price is at its trough. All these negative events took place despite the fact that the previous quarter included December Holiday sales. So far, Research In Motion has failed to provide any specific time frame when its free-fall will finally end and is delaying the launch its much-hyped QNX based phones. Management has decided to refrain from providing any specific financial guidance in future. We believe this decision highlights how grave the situation is as the company is unsure of its future prospects. Research In Motion is facing severe problems from several

Revenue was more or less in line with consensus estimates of $8.1 billion. Google’s superior algorithms have consistently attracted more users and generated better conversions. Research In Motion has consistently struggled ever since Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPhone hit the market. The situation worsened further when Google Inc. Presently, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry operating system has become obsolete and continues to lose market share. Moreover, the recent launch of Apple’siPhone 4S has further hampered its market share. This layoff is an attempt to optimize the cost structure, concentrate on the core businesses, and thereby improve the company’s competitiveness.
The present wireless market is ready for the incipient boom in the wireless data space with expanding broadband services. Data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds and has more than doubled over the last three years. As a result, U.S. carriers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising mobile data traffic. The situation becomes even worse with the growing popularity of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones. Stiff competitive pressure and limited wireless spectrum licenses add to the difficulties. The carriers are in need of additional airwaves to expand their high-speed services and support 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband services. As a result, the wireless industry in 2012 is intent on tapping unused spectrum to expand their capacity. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S), which

All this while, Sprint primarily focused on introducing top-end devices, like including Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 4 and 4S in October last year. These devices have remained accretive for the carrier, generating solid margin gains. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) so successfully sells computers, phones and other electronic gadgets that recently announced fourth-quarter profits soared 118% on a 73% increase in revenue. This is unheard of for a $475-billion company. And they’ve hired five underwriters for the job, with Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) taking the lead role. The company is currently looking at a valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion, which would be one of the largest initial public offerings in U.S. history. These Numbers Make No Sense… Facebook generated $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011, and a nice $1 billion in net income.
Following the second quarter 2012 earnings announcement on January 19, more than half the analysts covering Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) have made downward revisions to their estimates. The reason for the downward movement can be traced to the negative affect on the PC supply chain due to hard-disk drive (HDD) shortages and macroeconomic uncertainties that are expected to continue well into 2012. Last Quarter Synopsis Microsoft’s second quarter results were a couple of cents higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, the client PC business was impacted by the Thai floods, although all the other areas of the business saw good growth. However, shares gained just 0.77% after the company reported, despite losing 10.74% during the day, reflecting continued challenges in the company’s display and specialty materials businesses.
As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

Microsoft Corporation’s (MSFT) second quarter results were a couple of cents higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The last month has seen 10 analysts lowering estimates for the quarter, which took the Zacks Consensus down a penny. Therefore, without the revisions, Microsoft would have exceeded expectations. While the client PC business was slightly impacted by the Thai flooding, all other areas of the business saw good growth. Investors reacted as may be expected, taking share prices up 2.42% in after-hours trading. Revenue Revenue of $20.89 billion was up 20.2% sequentially and 4.7% from last year, just short of consensus expectations of $20.93 billion. Growth in the last quarter was again led by the Entertainment & Devices segment (up triple digits sequentially), with all segments other than Windows growing strong double-digits.

Prior-Quarter Synopsis eBay’s third quarter 2011 earnings per share (EPS) of 40 cents (excluding one-time items and including stock-based compensation) were level with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company reported gross revenue of $2.97 billion, up 7.4% sequentially and better than the Consensus expectation of $2.91 billion. Over 86% of eBay’s total revenue was transactions-based, while the remaining 14% came from marketing services.
Personal Computer (PC) shipments continue to struggle as research firms Gartner and IDC reported a decline in PC shipments for the fourth quarter of 2011. Gartner and IDC estimate 1.4% and 0.2% declines in worldwide PC shipments, respectively in the fourth quarter. Worldwide PC shipments for the fourth quarter were in the range of 92 million and 93 million, as per Gartner and IDC. The adjusted figures could be gathered from the PC makers, as the companies release their quarterly reports in the coming weeks. This decline in PC shipments is attributable to various factors, the most important of them being the growing popularity of the mobile devices that are more convenient, less expensive and almost as powerful as PCs.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) recently received an adverse ruling in a patent suit against Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) from the International Trade Commission (ITC). An ITC judge set aside Apple’s allegation that Motorola Mobility had violated three of its patents. This is Apple’s second defeat against Motorola in successive months, after a German court issued an injunction favoring Motorola in December last year. Although the current ruling will be reviewed by a six-member ITC panel, the full commission doesn’t usually contradict with the judge’s determinations. ITC is expected to issue the final verdict in March this year. ITC has the power of blocking import of products that infringe U.S. patents. This brings the total iPhone sales closer to Verizon’s targeted 11 million for fiscal 2011. The fourth quarter iPhone sales more than doubled from the prior quarter. Verizon added 2 million iPhones in the last quarter, trailing AT&T’s 2.7 million activations. Even then, Verizon outpaced AT&T in total subscriber gains, on the demand for handsets that run on Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android operating system. The company sold 2.2 million smartphones apart from iPhones in the recently concluded quarter using its highest-speed wireless network.
The telecommunications industry is growing consistently despite a volatile U.S. economy. This industry is identified as a major driver of economic recovery. Telecommunications is one of the few industries to have seen rapid technological improvement even during the last recession. Given the significance of the telecommunications industry as an infrastructure product, we expect the overall economic dynamics to shift in its favor. We also expect the telecommunications industry to grow faster in 2012 compared with 2011. Invention and Innovation The major thrust for the telecommunications sector is coming from nonstop network inventions by carriers. The introduction of super-fast networks such as HSPA+ and LTE has enabled handset developers and chipset manufacturers to develop innovative products that are compatible with the latest network technologies. Products like Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone, iPADS,

Despite the sluggish economy and stiff competition, U.S. telecom service providers are delivering consistent growth. These companies are innovating products and services as well as enhancing the existing ones to grow market share. Telecom operators provide Voice Telephony, Data, Internet, Cable and Satellite Television services through either wireless or wireline networks. Future growth of the telecom industry depends on the wireless segment as subscribers are discontinuing landlines and moving quickly to wireless connections. We expect wireless services to grow at a larger pace and account for 46% of the industry’s revenues in 2013, up from the current 42%. The carriers are rapidly entering into the cloud computing business due to increased competition and changing consumer habits. Cloud computing is now a business prerequisite that is high in demand. (YHOO) is revisiting a proposed deal to reduce its 40% stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and sell its 35% ownership position in Yahoo Japan. The proposal values Yahoo’s 40% stake in Alibaba at about $12 billion and its 35% stake in Yahoo Japan at about $5 billion. Hence, the total value of the sale for the Asian assets is valued at $17 billion to $18 billion. Despite being one of the biggest brand names, Yahoo has not done very well in the last few years. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2012. Shares jumped 18.6% to close at $31.63 following the news. Cotendo specializes in software and services that improve the delivery of content across the Web and on mobile-device networks. It is using the data of the famous search engine Google Inc. Google tracked the address of several flu-related Web searchers from 2003 to 2008, and formed a database of most flu-prone regions. The database was developed to help public health officials and health professionals to better respond to seasonal epidemics. Google also devised a formula to estimate regional flu activity with a reporting lag of roughly a day. It formed a predictive model called ‘Google Flu Trends’, which gained a significant edge over the only

by Chris Matthai, Investment U Research Tuesday, December 13, 2011 Individuals, businesses and governments are under attack… cyber attack. Collectively, we’ve never faced as many online threats as we do today. Why is so much hacking happening now? The answer is simple: More valuable information is stored online now than ever before and – at the same time – many organizations’ cyber security measures are still not up to snuff. In fact, phone makers are touting screen size, resolution, virtual or real QWERTY keyboards, video conferencing, recording and streaming, social networking, office integration and what not to boost sales. While our parents may have considered a phone good if it offered noise-free, good-quality sound, we are more on the lookout for contacts management, social networking integration and media support, while our kids would rather be using the device to listen to music, capture and stream video and play games. Or that is what the phone companies would like us to do. And considering the level of competition in the
