The European Union (EU) recently expanded the approval of Merck’s (MRK) Isentress (raltegravir) for the first line treatment of HIV patients. Earlier, it was approved for patients who had not responded to other treatment options. In the US, following a recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, Isentress can be used in combination therapy for previously untreated patients as well. Isentress recorded worldwide sales of $172 million for the second quarter of 2009, an increase of 123% compared with the year-ago period. We believe the recent FDA and EU approval (for previously untreated patients) could increase the number of targeted patients considerably, leading to a significant rise in sales. We expect the drug to record more than $1 billion in revenues by 2011. Recently, at the 49th Interscience Conference on

We are pleased to hear that Mylan (MYL) has begun to market the generic version of BenzaClin (1% Clindamycin and 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Gel) for acne treatment, which was originally manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis (SNY). The drug has been developed under an agreement between its subsidiary, Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, a subsidiary of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International. Earlier this month, Dow received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the generic drug. Although the approval is good news for the company, we do not expect it to contribute significantly to the top line since BenzaClin had total U.S. sales of about $221 million for the 12 months ending June 30 (as per IMS data). This is the third approval for Mylan in the month of August. A few

Yesterday, Mylan Inc. (MYL) announced that its Indian subsidiary, Matrix Laboratories, received tentative approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) for its generic version of a fixed-dose combination of Efavirenz, Emtricitabine, Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate tablets in 600 mg/200mg/300 mg dosage strengths. The decision is in response to an Abbreviated New Drug Application filed by the Indian subsidiary. The tentative approval under PEPFAR is indicative of the fact that the product satisfies all the manufacturing quality, safety and efficacy standards laid down by the agency. The Efavirenz, Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate combination is the generic version of Gilead Sciences’ (GILD) Atripla tablets used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults. It combines three anti-AIDS medicines into a single,

OVERVIEW The financial market and the economic landscape in the U.S. have not changed much since the beginning of the year. And we believe the status quo will last for a while at least in 2009. Large biotech companies are doing OK since they have strong balance sheets to weather the current market turmoil and can generate revenue from product sales. Investors in large biotechnology companies worth more than $1 billion have preserved much of their wealth. Smaller biotech companies, particularly those still in development stage, meanwhile, are under severe strain as the global economic slump cuts into sales and their ability to raise fresh cash to fund research. As we expected, the M&A spree has continued in the first three months of this year. Following the acquisition of Wyeth

Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD) continues to grow its earnings in a tough market on the strength of its HIV drug franchise. Gilead’s fourth-quarter results, reported on Jan 29, were once again of expectations. Revenue was up 30% from last year to $1.43 billion. Earnings came in at 60 cents per share, 5 cents ahead of the consensus estimate. This was Gilead’s second consecutive earnings surprise. Estimates Tick Higher After the solid quarter, analysts went ahead and lifted their earnings projections. The current-year estimate is up 11 cents to $2.51 per share. The next-year estimate is bullish, pegged at $2.86, a 14% earnings growth projection. The Chart In spite of Gilead’s great quarter, market pressure has weighed on the company’s share price after encountering some short-term resistance just above the $53
