Whirlpool Corporation (WHR) has opened a million-square-feet facility in East Tennessee that will manufacture premium cooking products. The new facility, replacing a 123-year-old plant at the same location, will add 130 jobs to the company’s 1,500 people workforce. The company has invested $200 million in the project. The facility also includes a 400,000-square-foot distribution center. Whirlpool posted a profit of $2.62 per share for the fourth quarter of 2011 compared with $171 million or $2.19 per share in the same period last year. However, excluding special items, profits decreased to 32 cents per share from 43 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2010. While earnings will remain the primary focus during the week, we have a number of market-moving economic releases on deck as well. We will get a sense of the consumer economy though the monthly Retail Sales numbers, while the Industrial Production report will give us a good read on the manufacturing sector. All I can say is… Our analysts are the real deal. Last year, Investment U Associate Investment Director Marc Lichtenfeld and Senior Analyst Steve McDonald made bold predictions about the world’s largest tech company Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). And already this year, both of their forecasts have come true… Prediction #1: Apple to $600 Steve McDonald’s prediction came first on December 19th. Here’s the condensed version of what he had to say: “A recent survey of buying trends of iProducts for Morgan Stanley by AlphaWise was full of upside surprises. “The street may be underestimating Apple’s 2012 ‘iProducts’ sales by as much as 40 percent. “If this

After announcing plans for initiating new intermodal services connecting British Columbia and Alberta, Canadian National Railway (CNI) is about to carry out another infrastructural development. The company is purchasing approximately 65 new and 96 second-hand locomotives to enhance the service abilities on its network and support the growing demand for rail freight.
The tide for commercial aerospace appears to have turned, as the global economy continues to recover. Both airline traffic and new aircraft orders have significantly recovered from their recession lows. Therefore, the stocks dealing with aerospace and defense products should be a good pick at least for the next couple years. Aerospace companies see continued growth in their backlog, with the industry now expected to grow in the mid-single-digit rate. However, the past decade has seen a much slower growth rate, so we have our reservations about this optimistic projection. The recent rebound in commercial air traffic and a slight increase in defense spend is good news for companies in the segment. Growth in commercial aircraft is expected to be driven by increased demand for new age jet engines which

Recently, Merge Healthcare (MRGE) showcased its new cloud-based platform ‘Merge Honeycomb’ along with its first application in the cloud, namely ‘free image sharing’ at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). This application enables users to upload, download, view and share medical images everywhere without the help of any additional software. Through this new solution the company intends to improve image interoperability and achieve the ‘Meaningful Use’ stamp from the federal government. Earlier this month, Merge selected Dell, Inc (DELL) as its preferred cloud computing services provider. The company expects to launch “Merge Honeycomb” in the first quarter of 2012, which led to a 17.5% increase in the stock price to $5.18 on Monday. Presently, Merge boasts the largest image sharing network opportunity with 6,000 clinics across the US, This

In the face of high competition, the Dutch company Royal Philips Electronics NV (PHG) got approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to sell a combination scanner that performs both positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging. The scanner is expected to accelerate imaging time for cancer patients, as PET identifies cancer cells as it absorbs chemical tracers. The magnetic resonance imaging will be helpful to identify the surrounding tissue. In addition, the magnetic imaging is also capable of scanning bone and combining systems in order to improve the diagnosis of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The big advantage of this machine is that these diagnoses can be done at much lower radiation levels than X-rays. In addition, the new scanner is expected to deliver with quality and

We maintain a Neutral rating on General Electric Company (GE), since the shares appear to be fairly valued. While the 10.8 multiple to our earnings estimate for 2011 represents a 37% discount to the peer group, we believe the valuation is justified by GE’s weaker earnings power. The energy business is expected to drive long-term growth for General Electric, as global demand for alternative energy production will continue to increase. The company had an order growth of 15% in the last reported quarter, primarily driven by demand for energy equipment. Aviation is another bright spot, with the rebound in commercial air traffic driving demand for GE’s new age jet engines. The jet engines are in high demand among the leading aircraft manufacturers, particularly Boeing (BA). However, the Industrial business and

Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Investors also eagerly awaitedAlcoa’s quarterly results, which would kick-start the third quarter earnings season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fluctuated between small gains and losses to finally end at 11,416.3, dropping roughly 0.2%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) declined by less than 0.1% to finish the day at 1,195.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 0.7% to close at 2,583.03.
Tyco International Ltd. (TYC) announced its plans to break out into three separate companies. The plan has received the unanimous approval of Tyco’s Board of Directors. The trio to be formed out of Tyco include the ADT North America residential security business, low control products and services business and commercial fire and security business. Each company will have an independent existence and will be publicly traded. Tyco believes the restructuring will enable each stand-alone unit to re-focus more fully on its core business and provide improved services to its customers. The three companies will enjoy leading positions in the markets served by them, thus creating significant value for shareholders. The transaction is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months, subject to certain conditions including shareholder consent. The company estimates

Europe remains in the headlines, with rating downgrades for two major French banks due to their Greek exposure. But the overall tone of Europe-centric headlines has improved as the Germans have started to back-peddle from some of their tougher statements. It may be a tad calmer in Europe today, but rest assured that the issue is not going away anytime soon. We also have plenty of economic news on the domestic front this morning, with a soft Retail Sales report and a fairly benign inflation reading. On the inflation front, we got a relatively benign wholesale inflation reading for August this morning, with the ‘headline’ flat vs. expectation of a 0.1% drop. The ‘core’ PPI number came in better than expected at 0.1% vs. an expectation of 0.2%. The more

Clean Energy and Spy Bots The biggest problem with most clean energy companies is the speculation involved. Most aren’t profitable, at least not yet, especially in the electronic vehicle (EV) market. It’s a guessing game trying to figure out what products or brands will take off. For instance, a company such as Ecotality (Nasdaq: ECTY) could end up being a future leader in EV charging systems. It announced last Thursday that it was chosen to install 200 EV charging stations around the Houston area. But the company’s tiny market cap of $53.96 million and lack of profitability makes Ecotality a relatively shaky investment. Its beta of 2.38 shows it’s more than twice as volatile as the market as a whole… and the market as a whole hasn’t been very stable.

The acquisition will cost the company $9.7 billion, at $135 per share. The purchase consideration includes $0.7 billion of the acquired company’s debt. Post-acquisition, Berkshire will continue with its headquarters at Wickliffe, Ohio, and will be led by the current management.
The Boeing Company (BA) announced that it will deliver its first 747-8 Freighter to Cargolux Airlines International S.A. on September 19, 2011 at Paine Field in Everett, Washington. Cargolux will also take delivery of the second 747-8 Freighter on September 21, 2011. The carrier has ordered 13 747-8 airplanes on Boeing. This new 747-8 model only retains the iconic shape of the first 747, but is by far more advanced than the initial 747′s rolled out from Boeing’s factory. The latest from Boeing features cutting-edge breakthroughs in aviation technology, akin to the 787 Dreamliner, featuring new wings, a brand new body and engines. Consequently, the airplane would improve upon fuel efficiency by 16% and reduce carbon emissions by another 16%. The 747-8 Freighter is the high-capacity version of 747 that

The Boeing Company (BA) launched a new engine variant of its 737 series airliners christened 737 MAX. Boeing 737 is a short- to medium-range, twin-engine narrow-body passenger jet airliner. The new engine variant 737 MAX would be powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines. CFM International is an equally owned joint venture between GE Aviation, a division of General Electric Company (GE) and French conglomerate Safran. The fuel efficient engines would enable the 737 MAX airliners with a distinct cost advantage over its peers in the single-aisle segment. Boeing estimates the advantage could stretch as far as 7% versus its comparable peers like the European aerospace company EADS’ Airbus A320 series airliners. Boeing’s new 737 variant has already order commitments for 496 units from five airlines. Delivery of the airline is

With the exception of a handful of financials — most notably Bank of America (BAC), which had a $12 billion negative swing in net income from last year — this has been another great earnings season. The year-over-year growth rate for the S&P 500 is 12.1%, way off the 17.6% pace those same 492 firms posted in the first quarter. However, it you exclude the Financial sector, growth is 19.7%, down only slightly from the 19.8% pace of the first quarter.
Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Meanwhile, reports of US trade deficit surging more than expected also kept investors jittery. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) shed 0.5% to settle at 12,446.88. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) finished at 1,313.64, after dropping 0.4%. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 0.7% to close at 2,781.91.
Itron Inc. (ITRI) recently announced the completion of the installation of more than 150,000 Itron gas meter communication modules in Greater Houston for a natural gas distribution subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy Inc. (CNP). The project will include a total of 1.2 million communication modules and will be completed by 2013. These meters can effectively do away with the necessity of entering the premises of customers to take the readings manually. These communication modules employ the radio transmitting devices attached to the CenterPoint Energy’s customers’ existing natural gas meters, enabling the collection of readings once a month by a mobile meter reading device mounted to a CenterPoint Energy vehicle. According to Itron, CenterPoint is an old and valued customer and Itron is looking forward to conferring the benefits of smart metering
