However, the results decreased 13.6% from 65 cents earned in the year-ago quarter. Total revenue of MXN$192.9 billion ($15.3 billion) improved marginally by 0.2% year over year and was in-line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Strong contributions from key markets across the globe aided the results. Excluding the impact of exchange rates, total revenue was up 6.1% year over year.
On Mar 5, we maintained our Neutral recommendation on Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), considering its tight grip over the telecommunication business, plus ample growth opportunities and market share capture potentiality. However, the company faces certain headwinds that will likely slow down its expansion speed in the coming months. The largest wireless carrier in the North America also holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Why Maintained? We believe that Verizon has a strong foothold in the wireless sector and continues to tap additional market share via robust deployment of the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. This is expected to lead to improved operating and capital efficiency. Strong sales of Apple’s iPhone as well as increased adoption of Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android smartphones will boost data revenue going forward. The company

The M2M market is growing rapidly in the cellular industry and is being used by a number of mobile network operators in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region in particular. Major operators are entering into M2M services as their voice and data service markets reach a saturation point. M2M refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wireline systems to communicate with other devices of the same capacity. In this regard, the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) cut a deal with France Telecom’s (FTE) Orange Business Services to offer machine-to-machine (M2M) data services outside the U.S. Along with Sprint’s current domestic and global M2M services, the latest M2M service is expected to reach 180 countries in sectors such as automotive telematics, smart grid and metering, healthcare,

by Carl Delfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, June 30, 2011: Issue #1546 When I was with a Wall Street firm, it was common for stockbrokers to mock investors who focused on income. Traditionally, income meant bonds… And in the old days many bonds came with coupons, which investors clipped and then cashed… And nothing was worse than being labeled a “coupon clipper.” But today, bond investors do have it even worse. One-year Treasuries yield nearly 0.19% right now. Meanwhile, inflation just hit 3.6%, according to the latest estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means you’re actually losing purchasing power by “collecting income” from one-year Treasuries right now. So if you’re looking to add to your income portfolio, what’s an investor to do? Millicom reported excellent financial results for the first quarter of 2011, easily beating the Zacks Consensus Estimates. This fabulous performance was primarily attributable to a double-digit growth in Latin America and Africa. Furthermore, highly penetrated Central American region also witnessed a 5% revenue growth. Significant growth of 3G mobile and broadband services coupled with lucrative wireless value-added services business in Central/South America and Africa will serve as long-term business catalysts. Millicom operates in Central & South America, and Africa. These regions are economically less stable, but average mobile penetration rates remain appealing at around 40% (20%-25% in Africa) fostering vast revenue potential.
P.T. Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk. (TLK), the largest telecom operator in Indonesia, recently provided a solid financial outlook for the ensuing fiscal 2011. The company estimated its total revenue in fiscal 2011 to grow by 7%-8% year over year. EBITDA margin will be around 58%. Total revenue in fiscal 2010 was $7,617 million, up 1.4% year over year. Telekomunikasi looks very comfortable with its wireless businesses projecting a 10% year-over-year growth in 2011. This is the primary reason for this strong revenue forecast. At the end of fiscal 2010, Telekomunikasi had around 95 million wireless subscribers. The Indonesian wireless services market is quickly maturing as several operators are offering more or less similar services. Telekomunikasi competes fiercely with P.T. Indosat Tbk (IIT) and P.T. The stock price has moved up by nearly 40% in the past year and is trading at its 52-week high at present. With respect to several valuation metrics, Millicom is trading at significantly higher multiples compared to both the S&P 500 average and the industry average. We believe increasing competition in the telecom sector in the emerging markets may generate volatile revenue trends. Millicom is giving a major thrust to its African operations for future growth. While our overall view is neutral for the industry, the recent sell-off has created attractive opportunities in a number of stocks. The industry encompasses a lot of technology-related businesses. Besides the traditional local and long-distance wire-line telephone services, telecommunications also include wireless communications, Internet services, fiber optics networks, cable TV networks and satellite communications. We believe that the overall economic dynamics may shift in favor of the telecommunications industry, although at a very slow pace, primarily due to its basic nature of being a major infrastructure product for both emerging and developed nations. Net profit surged to £8.6 billion (US$13.7 billion) from £3.08 billion (US$4.9 billion) a year ago, boosted by higher sales, lower impairment losses and reduced tax expenses. The year-ago quarter’s profit was dented by a £5.9 billion ($9.4 billion) impairment charge on the carrier’s operations in Spain, Turkey and Ghana. Consolidated revenues leapt 8.4% year-over-year to reach £44.5 billion (US$71 billion) on the back of favorable exchange rate swings and healthy contribution from the operator’s Asia-Pacific and Middle East operation which offset weak performances in the key European markets.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) has decided to postpone the launch of its iPad in international markets to the end of May 2010 (initially expected to be launched by the end of April). The company cited strong U.S. demand, which exceeded supply, as the reason for the postponement. The company is expected to announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on May 10. International markets have become an important driver of growth for AAPL as it has increased its presence in international markets via iPhones and iPods. International sales accounted for 58% of total revenue in the first quarter of 2010 (most recent quarter) compared to 46% of total revenue in the first quarter of 2009. Apple’s shares are now trading at an all-time high, as investors are more focused on

We have upgraded our recommendation for Vodafone (VOD) to Outperform based on the company’s healthy operating results in the last quarter and management’s upbeat guidance. Our assessment also reflects improving business trends in the carrier’s key European markets and opportunities for sustainable growth across the emerging markets. Revenue growth in the most recent quarter was fuelled by the healthy contributions from the Asia-Pacific and Middle East operations. Moreover, subscriber growth was driven by continued healthy net additions in the company’s Indian operation. Vodafone is the world’s largest revenue generating wireless carrier and is only behind China Mobile (CHL) in terms of overall subscriber count among the cellular operators. The carrier’s globally diversified operation is a natural hedge that offsets price competition and currency exchange translation risk that may arise in

The Indian telecom industry made history as the government finally kick-started the long-awaited 3G WCDMA spectrum (radio airwave) auction on Friday, April 9, 2010. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is conducting the 3G auction over the Internet with the bidders having respective passwords for accessing the sale process. Bidders at the auction are vying for a chunk of spectrum to roll out next-generation telecom services in the world’s fastest growing wireless market with roughly 600 million mobile subscribers. A separate spectrum auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is expected to start two days after the close of the 3G auction which may take several days to complete. Winning bidders have to pay for their licenses within 10 days following the auction closure. The DoT recently revealed the bidders’ names for

Vodafone (VOD) has teamed up with Norway-based browser developer Opera Software ASA to bring mobile Internet experience to millions of people across the emerging economies. The carrier plans to introduce a tailor-made version of the popular Opera Mini 5 mobile browser that will offer web access to low-end mobile handsets running on 2G networks. This is great news for cell phone users in developing nations, especially for the low-to-mid income group who so far does not have the privilege of using a state-of-the-art mobile Internet browser. The move is also in parity with Vodafone’s recent launch of low-cost handsets across select developing nations. This follows the recent approval from the European Commission, the executive body of the European Union (EU), and other necessary regulatory clearances. The management structure of the combined entity has been announced. The former chief executive of Orange UK will be the CEO of the integrated company while the former T-Mobile UK CEO has been designated as the Chief Financial Officer and deputy CEO. Nevertheless, we see a silver lining for the telecommunication industry in this challenging environment as the valuation level now reflects remedial conditions in the economy. Depressed stock prices may make investment entry points more favorable at this juncture, should stimulus plans improve worldwide economics. The industry encompasses a lot of technology-related businesses. Besides the traditional local and long-distance wireline telephone services, telecommunications also include wireless communications, Internet services, fiber optics networks, cable TV networks and satellite communications. According to our assessment, overall economic dynamics may shift in favor of the telecommunications industry, although at a very slow pace, primarily due to its basic nature of being a major infrastructure product for both the emerging and

Good news for 3G hopefuls in India as the country’s much-delayed 3G spectrum (radio airwaves) auction is finally set to be held in April 2010 after 4 postponements. The 3G WCDMA spectrum auction was recently deferred to August-September 2010 due to lack of available spectrum. India’s Department of Telecommunications (“DoT”) has been in a prolonged negotiation with the country’s Ministry of Defence as India’s armed forces had to vacate specific 3G spectrum required for the auction. As per the information provided by the DoT on Feb 25, 2010, the last date for submission of applications for the operators is March 19, 2010. Mock auctions will be held on April 5 and 6, followed by 3G auction on April 9, 2010. The DoT will auction 3-4 slots of 3G wireless spectrum

Group Revenue & EBITDA The telecom giant reported consolidated revenues of £21.8 billion (US$34.8 billion) for the period, representing a 9.3% year over year growth. Total savings from this program reached approximately €5.4 billion (US$7.7 billion) at the end of the quarter, exceeding the annual savings target of up to €4.7 billion (US$6.7 billion) originally expected to be achieved in 2010.
French telecom giant France Telecom (FTE) has reported operating results for third-quarter 2009 with revenue falling 6.4% year over year to €12.69 billion (US$18.1 billion), primarily due to unfavorable exchange rate fluctuations (British pound versus Polish zloty) and reduced mobile termination rates (inter-operator fees). Revenue was also hurt by the recession-driven discontinuation of landline phone use by customers. EBITDA & Margin France Telecom, which operates two of the leading telecom brands in Europe (Orange and Wanadoo), reported EBITDA of €4.6 billion (US$6.6 billion) which declined 8% from the year-ago quarter, resulting in a fall in EBITDA margin to 35.9% from 36.6%. This decline is a result of stringent price regulation and adverse currency exchange swings. Revenue by Key Markets Reported revenue in France (46% of group sales), the company’s largest
