The other three big ticket projects include the 660-megawatt Desert Sunlight project in California vended to NextEra Energy Resources (NEE) and General Electric (GE); the 348-megawatt Agua Caliente project in Arizona sold to NRG Energy Inc. Major bankruptcies, political scandals that have called into question subsides to the space, and intense competition from China have all combined to make an investment in this budding industry a big loser so far this year.
South Africa is playing host to the climate conference, which opens today in the city of Durban. Climate change conferences focus on reducing global temperatures, which appear to accelerate global warming. The Kyoto Protocol (1997), the game-changer in climate negotiations had identified developed countries as primarily responsible for high levels of green house gas emissions following decades of unbridled industrialization. The protocol requires countries to lower emissions according to pre-agreed targets. The commitment period that started in 2008 will conclude in 2012. Therefore, the Durban conference comes at an important juncture. Governments had agreed last year that emissions need to be reduced to keep global temperature rises at less than 2 degrees Celsius. However, according to EU negotiator Artur Runge-Metzger, recent reports caution that the world was looking at warming

Historically, the growth outlook of alternative energy companies has been inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. In the near term, however, the fortunes of the alternative energy players are undergoing a radical transformation.
The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is inversely related to the prices of petroleum products and directly related to the fortunes of the economy. The recent thaw in oil prices is casting a shadow over this emerging momentum. But even despite the pullback in oil prices, they still remain above historical levels. Nevertheless, we believe that a temporary oil price thaw will do limited, if any, damage to the emerging positive alternative energy narrative. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the projected U.S. refiner crude oil average acquisition cost will rise from $102 per barrel in 2011 to $108 per barrel in 2012. The U.S. economy was not able to completely shake off the negative momentum that plagued the economy in 2010. In the first half of 2011, the

And for 2015, GTM predicts that solar installations will increase to 35,500 megawatts. Most of these installations will probably take place in China, according to a report released six months ago by a HSBC research team that traveled to China. In the report, HSBC said that the country was on track to outstrip its own aggressive government targets for clean energy, solar energy included, by 50 percent in 2015. By 2020, HSBC expects China to install about 20 gigawatts of solar power facilities. Solar Demand Wanes as Production Amps Up While interest in the solar industry is at a new

by David Fessler, Investment U’s Monday, May 9, 2011 I haven’t written much about solar recently, and for good reason: There really hasn’t been much to write about. Many U.S. solar panel companies have gone belly-up, like EPV Solar, whose intellectual property was purchased by New Millennium Solar Equipment Corporation. Others, like Evergreen Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR), have outsourced their manufacturing operations overseas. Even that hasn’t helped this struggling U.S. manufacturer, whose shares are trading for just over a $1. Still others have merged with or been bought out by larger competitors, like Advanced Solar. Running out of money, it was acquired in November of 2009 by Applied Materials (Nasdaq: AMAT). Or OptiSolar, which was acquired for $400 million by First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) in March of 2009. But

The awful news out of Japan just seems to keep getting worse. There are now four reactors that are in trouble and significant (although outside the gates of the plant, not immediately dangerous) levels of radiation have been released into the atmosphere. That has severely strained the country’s electrical system (along with other damaged generating and transmission facilities), and there have been rolling blackouts across the country. Most of the factories in the country have been shut down, either due to direct damage or to save electricity. Clearly that is going to be a massive hit to the economy, and first quarter growth there is going to be negative. By how much is really anybody’s guess at this point. The amount of direct damage is probably on the order of

Benchmarks inched down by a point as Japan’s nuclear crisis started taking its toll, raising concerns of a dip in the global economy. However, experts’ opinion of the Japan crisis being only a short-term drag for the US markets reduced investors’ anxiety to a certain extent. Separately, a state of emergency was declared in Bahrain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) survived a 300 point plunge shortly after the market opened to end at 11.855.42, dropping 1.2% or 137 points. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) closed at 1,281.87 recovering from a 2.7% fall after the market opened and finally managed to shed 1.1%. The

Trends on both fronts appear be favoring the alternative energy industry at present. The U.S. economy has shaken off the negative momentum that appeared to be taking hold in the middle of 2010. The fourth quarter GDP report, despite the subsequent negative revision, is showing the resumption of sustainable economic growth. Importantly, the drivers of economic growth appear to have shifted the more stable consumer spending side. Major economic reports, such as the ISM Indices, leading indicators and consumer confidence are all showing signs of renewed strength. Moderately positive domestic economic data and a small decline in crude prices brought cheer to investors after a week of falling indices.
OUTLOOK Like everyone else, the Alternative Energy industry was hit hard by the Great Recession and essentially remains in recovery mode. And while the economy is in recovery mode, so is our hope for the industry. The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, the global economic expansion remains on track. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in its latest release U.S. electricity consumption is expected to rise year-over-year by 4.7% in 2010. Going forward, in fiscal 2011 we expect the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to grow 3.7% year-over-year. Along with this, a faster decline in the unemployment rate will jack up electricity demand, funneling investor interest in the sector. Also, the outlook for the major emerging

This acquisition cements NRG Energy’s alliance with First Solar, as the latter has recently agreed to assist NRG Energy to develop another solar project in New Mexico. The construction work of the 290 MW Agua Caliente solar project will be completed by 2014. This project will create 400 jobs during the construction process and, once operational, will be the largest photovoltaic solar power plant in the world. The Yuma County, Arizona based solar power project has already executed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric (PCG) for delivery of green power. Just this past summer, the last vestiges of any meaningful climate change legislation withered on the vine in the Senate, despite getting previous approval in the House of Representatives.
OUTLOOK The Alternative Energy industry is going through a recovery after emerging from the global recession and the cascading fall in global crude oil prices. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track. The outlook for the U.S. and key emerging markets remains positive. In the first quarter of fiscal 2010, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 3.2%, while sale of electricity to the industrial sector, per the Energy Information Administration (EIA) Incorporatedreased by 2.7%

The Edison Mission projects that First Solar is acquiring are sited largely on private land, and range from 20MW to 150MW. First Solar and Edison Mission have worked together since 2008 on projects, with First Solar providing engineering, procurement and construction services while Edison Mission was responsible for land acquisition. Earlier this week, my colleague Marc Lichtenfeld detailed the impact that a healthcare reform bill will have on the various industries and stocks within the healthcare and biotech sectors. But there are big changes coming in the energy and infrastructure sectors, too. And with much of the infrastructure improvements energy-related, that means there will be plenty of lucrative areas to put your investment dollars to work in the coming months. Here’s my energy and infrastructure forecast for 2010, along a few companies that stand to benefit… Profit From Oil Now… While You Still

The real beneficiary of a healthy business duel, however, is the customer. Particularly when the competition gets down to price. Nowhere is that more apparent right now than in the solar energy industry. Over the past few weeks, solar panel and module prices have been dropping through the floor. The reason can be summed up in just one word: China. Executing a strategy not unlike the Japanese car companies did back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Chinese solar panel manufacturers are selling solar panels for less than it costs to make them. Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE: STP) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Company, Ltd. (NYSE:YGE) are

On the one hand, we have governments globally trying to give the industry the impetus it needs, through subsidies and incentives, to fulfill its potential and become a mainstream energy source. On the other hand, the fundamentals for the industry are currently far from sunny. But just because there’s cloud cover, doesn’t mean that solar panels don’t make energy. And even though the markets conditions have changed, doesn’t mean we can’t make money here. Let’s take a closer look at the solar sector to see where the best opportunities are for investors. By all accounts, solar power is quickly becoming the fastest growing energy source in the United States, and indeed, the world. But here’s the most amazing part… Even with a meteoric 48% annual growth – and that of a select group of solar companies – its just getting started. The market is expected to double over the next five years, and triple in just seven. What’s behind solar’s shine? Is this torrid growth sustainable? What opportunities are there for investment in the solar space? Let’s take a look. A Quick Solar Panel Primer Solar panels can be divided into several types: thermal, photovoltaic, hybrid and building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). In a thermal collector,

It’s the industry cost leader by a wide margin… the only manufacturer able to produce panels at under $1.00 per watt. It’s one of the reasons First Solar shares were one of the darlings of Wall Street, soaring 942% between January 2007 and May 2008.
