Energy and basic materials took the benchmarks modestly higher on Friday, snapping a three-day losing streak. However, meager gains failed to prevent the Dow and S&P 500 from suffering their worst weekly performance this year. Global economic concerns weighed on investors through the week and their influence carried onto Friday. Moreover, tepid housing data made matters worse on Friday, limiting gains. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) gained 0.3% and closed the day at 13,080.73. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was also up 0.3% and finished Friday’s trading session at 1,397.11. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index edged up 0.1% and settled at 3,067.92.
European debt concerns once again weighed down the markets and dragged the Dow slightly lower, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted meager gains. Reports of Germany’s economy contracting during the end of 2011 and a downward revision of economic growth estimates by the European Union (EU) dented the markets. However, a late upward swing helped the markets extend their stay around five-month high levels. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped 0.1% to settle at 12,449.45. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) edged up by a mere 0.03% to finish yesterday’s trading session at 1,292.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.3% to close at 2,710.76.
Workers at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) decided to end a strike at Peruvian copper mine Cerro Verde that began almost two months ago. Union workers discontinued their work in September 2011 to back demands for higher pay. Cerro Verde has been operating the mine at two-thirds of the normal daily rate with supervisors and volunteer personnel. As per the union, no agreement was reached with the company. However, workers expect authorities from Arequipa region, where the mine is located, to issue a resolution in the coming days in order to resolve the dispute. The union called off the strike so that the regional government could take a decision. However, the country’s longest-running mining dispute still continues at Freeport’s Grasberg mine in Indonesia. Miners at Grasberg, the world’s second-biggest copper

by Carl Delfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, November 17, 2011 I’ll never forget my first visit as a teenager to the commodity-trading pit of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). The swirling bright colored jackets, the shouting and rapid hand signals (looked like arm wrestling to me) were captivating and reminded me of past family gatherings. It was also the polar opposite of my later visit to the currency trading floor of JP Morgan at 1 Wall Street – row after row of white shirts hunched over computer screens and dry IMF statistics. Commodities sure looked like more fun to me. My image of commodity markets hasn’t changed all that much since. It’s a volatile and wild ride where even a tiny bit of new information affecting supply or demand

Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Workers at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold‘s (FCX) Grasberg mine in Indonesia plan to go on strike in the coming days after talks with the company failed to resolve a pay dispute, a move that could tighten global copper supplies and lift prices. A strike would be the second in two months at Grasberg, the world’s third biggest copper mine that also has the biggest gold reserves, after the eight-day stoppage in July 2011 caused production losses and helped push copper prices to three-month highs. The strike by 8,000 workers halted ore shipments and caused a production loss of 60,000 ounces of gold and 35 million pounds (15,876 tons) of copper. The company’s union in Indonesia, which represents about 8,000 workers, have demanded a pay rise to between $17.5 to $43

Markets registered their first back-to-back gains this month, as industrial and material stocks helped push the benchmarks higher. The trading session was significantly calm compared to the high levels of volatility that the markets endured since early last month. For the first time since July 26, the Dow traded in a narrow range of a little over 150 points. Hopes about European leaders taking steps to resolve the Greek debt crisis also helped the markets’ uptrend. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained 0.4% and finished the day at 11,105.85. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) was up 0.9% and settled at 1,172.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 2,532.15, after gaining 1.5%.
Thousands of workers kicked off a weeklong strike at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.’s (FCX) gold and copper mine in eastern Indonesia, demanding higher wages and protesting the dismissal of their union leaders. The US mining giant insists that the work stoppage at the Grasberg mine in the remote province of Papua will not affect production. As per the company’s website Grasberg mine contains the world’s largest recoverable reserves of copper and the biggest single gold reserve. The workers called for a re-negotiating contract and management failed to re-negotiate contracts seeking wage increases from $1.8 to $15 per hour as the workers argue that other Freeport workers around the world are paid at least $15-30 per hour.
Today I review two short or “naked” put trades I have talked about this month to show examples of how this option technique can be used successfully to either generate income or to buy your favorite names at a discount. On paper, one of the open trades is a winner, and one is a loser. But even the loser I am very comfortable with and I will explain why in detail.
Recently, Rio Tinto plc (RIO) received a nod from the Indian Steel major Tata Steel to buy 26% stake in its coal mining company, Riversdale in an open offer of AUD 16.5 per share, or roughly $17.36 per share. The deal is valued at $1.1 billion. The deal is expected to give Rio Tinto full control over the Riversdale coal miner for secure coal assets for Rio’s mining requirements, on the backdrop of rising fuel prices. The transaction is expected to provide significant potential for increasing Rio Tinto’s coal output. Rio won majority control of Riversdale earlier in 2011 with a $3.9 billion bid. The company raised its holding in the African Miner to 73% in April, following a deal with the Brazilian steelmaker, Companhia Siderurgica Naciona (SID) for its 19.9%

Last year, it mined net profits of $3.3 billion, but it wants more… So it recently surprised the market with a $7.6-billion bid for Canadian-Australian copper mining company Equinox Minerals (OTC: EQXMF.PK). African Copper Barrick isn’t the only company interested in Equinox; China’s Minmetals Resources tried to acquire it, as well. So Barrick stepped in to offer a 16 percent premium to Minmetals’

Lackluster and mixed earnings reports did little to restore investors’ faith. However, positive economic data helped the indices avoid a big fall.
On Thursday, markets ended marginally lower and shed gains from the previous session. The dismal show of the indices yesterday was primarily due to disappointing economic data. However, successful bond auctions in Europe somewhat soothed investors’ frayed nerves. The Dow was down 0.2% and closed at 11,731.9. The S&P 500 lost 0.2% and ended the day at 1,283.76. The Nasdaq composite edged down 0.1% and closed at 2,735.29. On the New York Stock Exchange, breadth of the market was marginally on the negative side and consolidated volumes stood at 4.4 billion shares. The economic data that caused much of the tension in the markets was from a report issued by the Labor Department. According to the report, the number of jobless claims surged to its highest level since October 2010.

Interest rate hikes from central banks of India and Australia also had a part in yesterday’s rally. The 30-share blue-chip average advanced 64 points, or about 0.6%, to 11,188.72, its highest level since April 26. The broader S&P’s 500-stock index climbed more than 9 points, or nearly 0.8%, to 1193.57 and the technology-focused Nasdaq rose more than 28 points, or 1.1%, to 2533.52.
Total Industrial Production rose by 0.2% in August, which was a tick less than the 0.3% rise that was expected. It was also slower than the 0.6% rise in July. The July number was revised down from a 1.0% increase, but June was revised to an increase of 0.1% from a decline of 0.1%. Relative to a year ago, total Industrial Production is up 6.2%. These numbers are slightly disappointing, but far from a disaster, as much of the weakness can be traced to some seasonal adjustment problems. Total Industrial Production includes not only the output of the nation’s factories, but of its mines and utility power plants as well. The production and consumption of electricity generally has as much to do with the weather as it does with overall

The industry is oligarchic in structure, with a few producers accounting for the lion’s share of the output. The largest segment of the global metals market is iron and steel, followed by aluminum. The iron and steel segment comprises more than half the industry in terms of volume. This industry includes metal ore exploration and mining services, iron and steel foundries for smelting, rolling, forging, spinning, recycling, stamping, polishing and plating of iron and steel products such as pipes, tubes, wire, spring, rolls and bars.
In April, Industrial Production rose 0.8%, which was in line with consensus expectations. The revisions to previous months’ data was more or less a wash, with growth being revised up in March by 0.1% to 0.2%, and for January it was revised up by 0.2% to 1.2%. That was offset by a 0.4% downward revision to February to -0.1%. While that downward revision makes it no longer possible to say that Industrial Production has been rising every month since last June, the overall revisions don’t really change the picture that much. Behind the Headline Numbers When one looks just a bit beyond the headline numbers, the data looks even better than the 0.8% growth implies. For starters keep in mind that these are month to month changes, not annual rates.

Earnings improved significantly from a modest net income of $43 million, $0.11 per share in the first-quarter 2009. Revenues climbed 68% to $4.4 billion helped by surging prices of copper, gold and molybdenum. Phoenix-based Freeport-McMoRan has been showing signs of recovery. The company’s earnings rose for the first time in the third quarter of 2009 on higher sales to China and other developing countries, as well as lower costs of production and delivery.
In February, the Producer Price Index (PPI) fell by 0.6%, a far bigger decline than the 0.2% drop expected by the consensus of forecasts. However, all of the decline came from a bigger-than-expected fall in Energy prices. The core index, which strips out the volatile food and energy components rose by 0.1%, which was in line with forecasts. The decline in the headline number only partially reversed the big 1.4% increase in January, which came on top of a 0.4% rise in December. Core prices have been much more stable (as is normally the case) with this month’s 0.1% rise coming on top of a 0.3% increase in January and an unchanged reading in December. Unfortunately, energy prices, especially crude oil, have rallied so far in March, so the headline number for March

That far exceeded consensus expectations for an increase to 55.5. It is also the highest reading on the consensus index since August of 2004. This is a stunning turnaround in the index, which in December of 2008 stood at 32.5, its lowest level since March of 1975. The index is set up so that any reading above 50.0 indicates that the manufacturing side of the economy is expanding, and any level below that indicated contraction. (FCX), reported fourth-quarter 2009 earnings of $2.15 per share, ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.59 per share. Earnings represented a significant turnaround from a $14 billion loss in the same quarter the previous year. Revenues more than doubled to $4.61 billion. Phoenix-based Freeport-McMoRan has been showing signs of recovery. The company’s earnings rose in the third quarter for the first time in 2009 on higher sales to China and other developing countries, as well as lower costs for production and delivery. Freeport’s performance reflects a successful execution of various cost-reduction initiatives and higher ore grades at Grasberg. The company is responding aggressively to the economic downturn by curtailing production levels, cutting costs, reducing exploration expenditures and

However, when you dig just a bit below the surface, the report was weaker than expected. Manufacturing output actually declined 0.1%, and the November rise was revised down to 0.9% from 1.1%, while the October number was revised up to a decline of 0.1% from the previous 0.2% decline. The overall increase was due to a 5.9% surge in Utility output, which has more to due with a cold snap in December than it does with a surge in economic activity. In November, which was milder than normal, Utility output fell by 2.4%. The third major component, Mining, saw its output rise by 0.2%, a big slowdown from the 1.9% surge in

U.S. stocks ended the day little changed as a mixed bag of economic data and caution ahead of the government’s employment report on Friday kept traders on the sidelines. The FOMC minutes did not sound too convincing on the economy’s upturn, and traders pondered over the economy’s direction. US dollar weakened as the release of the minutes strengthened expectations interest rates would continue to remain exceptionally low. The weakness in dollar sent commodity prices higher and Treasuries lower. Although inflationary risks were deemed low, the policy makers appeared less convinced about the recovery’s strength, with housing still a concern. The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day almost unchanged, closing at 10,574. The broader S&P 500, helped by the strength in its basic material and oil and gas components, closed

The Metals & Mining Industry encompasses the extraction (mining), as well as the primary and secondary processing, of metals and minerals. The industry is rather concentrated in structure, with a few producers accounting for the lion’s share of sales. Geographically, the Asia-Pacific region is witnessing higher production and consumption of metals, especially China and India. This is due to the per capita consumption in these two counties approaching the U.S./European levels, which could ? theoretically at least ? double metal demand in the longer term. Historically, the automotive and construction markets have been the largest drivers of metal consumption, more than 50% of the total demand. Other metal consuming industries include energy, electrical equipment, agricultural, domestic and commercial equipment and industrial machinery.
by Karim Rahemtulla, Options Expert Tuesday, December 1, 2009: Issue #1148 Take a quick glance at the share prices of certain companies today and you’d think the savage 2008 was a distant memory. But 2009 has confounded the “experts” who called for more of the same this year, with stocks rallying sharply, giving investors a chance to recoup some of their losses – and even turn a profit. However, not everyone jumped aboard. And during the greatest destruction of wealth in our generation, few could blame them. So if you feel like you’ve missed the boat on some of Wall Street’s resurgence this year, I have some great news. Companies like Apple (Nasdaq: APPL), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW), and Freeport McMoran (NYSE: FCX) are
