Online social networking mogul Facebook (FB) is scheduled to start trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market today at around 11.00 a.m. Yesterday, its much-hyped initial public offering (IPO) yielded approximately $16 billion from 33 investment banks, led by Morgan Stanley (MS). Given Facebook’s size, the investment banks underwriting the issue are expected to charge as much as 3% of the proceeds as their commission. At the time of IPO filing, Facebook’s price band was $28 to $35 per share. However, earlier this week (May 15, 2012), Facebook raised the price range to $34 to $38 per share and the very next day (May 16, 2012) the company increased the size of the offering by 25% to 421 million, representing a 15% float. Facebook eventually priced its IPO at $38.00 per

The company recorded improvement in sales in all of its segments. Sales in the Domestic segment hiked 26% to 7,991 vehicles; Imports increased 10% to 13,403 vehicles and the Premium Luxury segment rose 10% to 4,095 vehicles during the month. Last month, light vehicle sales in the U.S. grew 10% to seasonally adjusted annual rate of 14.4 million units from 13.1 million units in the same month of 2011. The increase was driven by higher demand for fuel-efficient small cars and compacts due to rising gas prices. Mild weather and increasing age of vehicles on road stimulated sales during the month.
About the Industry The steel industry can well be termed the backbone of modern society considering steel’s varied uses, be it in construction, transport, electrical appliances, food packaging and the like. In terms of its composition, steel is an alloy of iron and carbon containing less than 2% carbon and 1% manganese and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen. Steel products are classified into four broad categories: flat steel products, long steel products, scrap and semi-finished products. Flat products include plates, hot-rolled strip and sheets, and cold-rolled strip and sheets. The long steel product category includes wire rods, beams, reinforced bars and merchant bars. The products under both these categories are rolled from steel slabs, which are considered as unfinished or semi-finished products that are generally not sold.

The top-10 global automakers account for roughly 80% of the worldwide production and nearly 90% of total vehicles sold in the U.S. In January-February 2012, General Motors Company (GM) led with a 18.3% market share in the U.S., followed by Ford Motor Co. (F) with a 15.3% market share, Toyota Motors Corp. (TM) with a 13.8% market share, Chrysler-Fiat with a 11.4% market share, and Honda Motor Co. (HMC) and Nissan Motor Co. Due to a massive structural change after the global economic meltdown in 2008, the global auto industry is expected to be ruled by automakers and suppliers based in the six major auto markets: China, India, Japan, Korea, Western Europe

Ford Motor Co. (F) revealed that it is likely to lose between $500 million and $600 million in 2012 in the 19 European markets covered by the automaker owing to the ongoing debt crisis in the region. The figure compared with a meager $27 million loss recorded by the company in 2011. In the fourth quarter of last year, the loss amounted to $190 million. While releasing the fourth quarter results, Ford projected industry volume (including medium and heavy trucks) of 14.0 million units–15.0 million units for full year 2012 in Europe. However, industry-wide sales in the region are expected to reach the lower end of the forecast, according to the Chief Financial Officer of the company, Lewis Booth. It was the “super spike” in the price of oil which called for prices to dramatically increase from the $115 level to an unthinkable $150-$200 a barrel. This call came from the same analyst that three years earlier saw $100 barrel crude when sweet Texas tea was hovering close to $60. The earlier call was also a somewhat unthinkable prospect. Recently, we got another call from the same brokerage… just a different analyst this time. The call isn’t quite the same, but the idea is. Oil prices are expected to move higher. We will leave the details of Iran or supply and demand out of this discussion and focus on how we can best position our

The headlines on that count are on the weak side. In its first read on the fourth quarter of 2011, the commerce department reported that the U.S. economy expanded at a lower than expected 2.8% pace in the last quarter of 2011, up from the third quarter’s 1.8% growth rate. Most of the recalled vehicles were sold in the U.S. The automaker would recall 286,000 units of Ford Escape SUVs from the 2001 and 2002 model years due to a problem with the braking system that could lead to fires. The sale includes a manufacturing facility in Bretten, Germany that employs 230 people.
All eyes are on Europe today, where leaders are expected to announce the much-delayed plan to tackle the common currency’s problems. And while we wait for news out of Europe, the positive tone of this morning’s earnings reports from a number of key companies and the monthly Durable Goods reading should keep the market mood favorable. Last night’s Amazon (AMZN) miss notwithstanding, the overall tone of earnings reports thus far in this reporting cycle in general and this morning in particular has been reassuringly positive. There are still some lingering questions about next year’s earnings expectations, but overall the earnings picture remains strong. This morning’s September Durable Goods report came roughly in-line with expectations on the ‘headline’ basis, but was significantly better than expected on the ‘core’ basis. The deal covers 41,000 Ford workers in the U.S. Under the ratified deal, most of the Ford workers would not be entitled to annual pay raises. However, they will receive profit-sharing checks, inflation adjustment payments and other bonuses worth totaling at least $16,700 until 2015. We appreciate the company’s optimal brand and market mix, which is pushing up new vehicle sales as the market revives. However, we are concerned about tough competition and rising interest rates faced by the company. In the second quarter of the year, AutoNation reported an 18% rise in profits to $73 million or 49 cents per share from $62 million or 38 cents per share in the prior-year quarter. With this, the automotive retailer has inched past the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2 cents per share. The second quarter profits excluded an adjustment related to debt-refinancing costs of $12 million (after-tax) or 7 cents per share. GM revealed that total vehicle sales would reach 19 million–19.2 million units for the full year. Automobile sales in China were adversely affected by the expiration of tax incentives for small cars and subsidies for van buyers in rural areas as well as restrictions on new car registrations in Beijing and other cities. As a result, sales grew 3.3% on a year-over-year basis to 11.98 million units in the first eight months of the year after rising 32% in 2010. It will produce start-stop batteries and cater to global and local automakers in Asia. It is expected to begin production in early 2013. The Start-Stop system is an emerging technology that saves power/fuel in battery/gasoline powered vehicles. The Start-Stop technology automatically shuts down and restarts the internal combustion engine when the driver engages the clutch or releases the brake pedal to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling, thereby improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. In gasoline-powered vehicles, it can reduce emissions by 5%–12%. Johnson Controls is the leading supplier of Start-Stop batteries in Europe through its VARTA brand. (SUP) reported anet income of $14.7 million or 53 cents per share in the second quarter of 2011 compared with $10.1 million or 38 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Earnings per share comprehensively beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 37 cents per share. The significant upside in results was attributed to strong and stable demand for the company’s products, partially offset by a decline of shipments to Toyota arising from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. During the quarter, net sales climbed 7% year over year to $208.7 million, primarily driven by an increase in the pass-through pricing of aluminum. Unit wheel shipments remained almost flat year over year at 2.9 million, although average selling prices increased almost 8% year over year. Cost of

Stocks may find it hard to stay focused on the day’s earnings parade given the continued stalemate in Washington on the debt ceiling issue. We also have a couple of housing and consumer confidence reports coming out after the markets open. But had Washington not been as distracting as it has been lately, corporate earnings would be the most important news of the day. The markets have remained fairly stable thus far even as we get closer to the debt ceiling’s August 2 deadline. With the exception of the gold, no asset class appears to be worried. And this is hardly a sign of complacency. The markets may not be as efficient as some academics believe, but they are smart enough to evaluate America’s financial health.
Earnings season will soon be upon us again. What the market will be looking for are those companies that come in with higher-than-expected earnings to reward, and for those firms that disappoint to punish. However, there will be cases where one company beats by a small amount, say $0.05 or 2.5%, and there is a big jump in the price of a stock in reaction, but on the same day there might be another firm that beats by $0.10 or 10%, and it is treated as a relative non-event by the market. Why is that? Well, too much of the emphasis will be one-dimensional — by what percentage or dollar amount did the actual result come in above or below the estimate? The significance of a percentage beat also varies

Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) announced that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of California-based EnergyConnect Group Inc. on July 1. The company purchased the company for $32.3 million. EnergyConnect Group Inc. provides demand-response services to the electricity grid. The demand-response programs offer incentives for curtailing consumption during periods of peak demand. The acquisition will boost the company’s Building Efficiency business as EnergyConnect’s technologies provide real-time pricing information that is used by commercial, institutional and industrial customers to manage their electricity consumption more efficiently. The blending of demand-response services with Johnson Controls’ building efficiency technologies will undoubtedly place the company among the market leaders. Wisconsin-based Johnson Controls is a supplier of automotive interiors, batteries, and other control equipment. The company functions through three segments: Automotive Experience, Building Efficiency and Power
