Energy generation company NRG Energy Inc. (NRG) announced that its unit NRG Solar has acquired a 290 megawatt (MW) solar project from First Solar Inc. (FSLR). This acquisition cements NRG Energy’s alliance with First Solar, as the latter has recently agreed to assist NRG Energy to develop another solar project in New Mexico. The construction work of the 290 MW Agua Caliente solar project will be completed by 2014. This project will create 400 jobs during the construction process and, once operational, will be the largest photovoltaic solar power plant in the world. The Yuma County, Arizona based solar power project has already executed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric (PCG) for delivery of green power. This solar project will provide zero-emission power and in that

Sincerely, Planet Earth Finding a viable, top-down energy policy in the United States is about as elusive as finding a snowman in July. Just this past summer, the last vestiges of any meaningful climate change legislation withered on the vine in the Senate, despite getting previous approval in the House of Representatives. It was the latest in a long line of frustrating blows to those in favor of cleaner, greener energy – and underlined the fact that the solution to our energy will come from the ground up, rather than the top down… And Tuesday’s elections provided a great example of that, as voters in California emphatically

The current Zacks Consensus Estimate for the third quarter is $1.92 per share, representing an annualized growth of 7.3%. (FSLR) has signed contract volume expansion agreements with seven customers leading to a 380 megawatt (MW) increase in its order backlog for 2011 over previously announced volumes. The expanded contracts are with existing customers and will serve predominantly European markets. The new contracts are in line with First Solar’s plan to add manufacturing capacity in Germany and France to better meet local demand and encourage the development of the market for utility-scale solar electricity. The company generates a lion’s share of its sales from Germany (65% in 2009). First Solar employs more than 4,700 associates worldwide. And while stock prices of alternative energy companies have recovered from their lows, valuations still remain quite attractive by historical standards. Overall industry fundamentals are expected to continue the improving trend into the second half of 2010 and beyond. Notwithstanding current concerns about the near-term the economic outlook, the improving economic scene — both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide — should help the industry’s recovery process along. First Solar acquired NextLight in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $297 million. First Solar through the acquisition at one fell swoop increased its power purchase agreement to 2.2 GW for utility-scale solar projects in North America. The transaction represents another strategic step in the company’s expansion in the U.S. utility-scale power market, which began in 2007 with the acquisition of Turner Renewable Energy. Subsequently, the company acquired the ongoing solar projects from OptiSolar in 2009 and Edison International (EIX) in 2010. (FSLR) announced its intent to double the capacity of its German manufacturing plant in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany , which will create several hundred new jobs in the process. First Solar already employs more than 600 associates in its Frankfurt manufacturing plant. The company is in advanced stages of discussion with the German regional and federal authorities to obtain the necessary regulatory permits and financial framework for the expansion. The expansion would be the first major foreign direct investment in the German green technology sector in fiscal 2010. It would double the annual capacity of the Frankfurt manufacturing plant to around 446 megawatts (MW) by the fourth quarter of 2011 from the current capacity of 223 MW. Last year, quite a few alternative energy companies were in the trough. And although these companies have recovered from their lows, their valuations still remain attractive. The growth of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, particularly in the wake of the European sovereign debt issue, the global economic expansion remains on track.
First Solar Inc. (FSLR) has recently entered into an agreement with Enbridge Inc. (ENB). As per the agreement, Enbridge will acquire First Solar’s 20MW solar energy project under construction near Sarnia, Ontario. The Sarnia solar energy project is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2009. The project is touted as the largest photovoltaic solar energy facility in Canada and one of the largest in North America. At 20MW, Enbridge expects the project to generate enough power to meet the needs of about 3,200 homes and help to save the equivalent of approximately 6,600 tons of CO2 annually. First Solar will provide operations and maintenance services under a long-term contract. The power output of the facility will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority as per a 20-year

by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist Competition – as I used to say to my sales force – has a way of keeping competitors honest. The real beneficiary of a healthy business duel, however, is the customer. Particularly when the competition gets down to price. Nowhere is that more apparent right now than in the solar energy industry. Over the past few weeks, solar panel and module prices have been dropping through the floor. The reason can be summed up in just one word: China. Executing a strategy not unlike the Japanese car companies did back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Chinese solar panel manufacturers are selling solar panels for less than it costs to make them. Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE: STP) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Company, Ltd. (NYSE:YGE) are

Tony Daltorio, The Investment U Research Team The forecast for the solar power industry is rather cloudy. On the one hand, we have governments globally trying to give the industry the impetus it needs, through subsidies and incentives, to fulfill its potential and become a mainstream energy source. On the other hand, the fundamentals for the industry are currently far from sunny. But just because there’s cloud cover, doesn’t mean that solar panels don’t make energy. And even though the markets conditions have changed, doesn’t mean we can’t make money here. Let’s take a closer look at the solar sector to see where the best opportunities are for investors. The Global Solar Industry Only last year, it was bright sunny skies for the solar industry. Demand for photovoltaic panels had

Southern California Edison, a subsidiary of Edison International (EIX), and First Solar (FSLR) have joined forces in developing two solar power facilities in Southern California, having a combined generating capacity of 550 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. Requisite approvals are pending at the California Public Utilities Commission. First Solar will be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of these two projects – a 250MW Desert Sunlight plant near Desert Center and another 300 MW Stateline plant at San Bernardino. Southern California Edison will be in charge of electricity distribution once the project is over. Construction work for Desert Sunlight is planned to start in 2012 and for Stateline in 2013. Both the projects are likely to be completed by 2015. First Solar will deploy its advanced thin-film photovoltaic solar

Last year it would have been hard to imagine that the green energy movement would face so many obstacles so quickly. Oil prices were skyrocketing, almost $150 a barrel, and renewable energy start-ups were having money thrown at them. Fast forward six months and we’re seeing numerous green power concerns, from solar, ethanol and wind, postponed or cut back. The interesting thing is, depending upon the day; you’ll get contradictory images on what the outlook for green energy is right now. Some days it’s up, and others it’s down. It’s a roller coaster of information – some good, some bad. But you would be mistaken to think that green power is flickering out. In fact, California added 500 megawatts of green power last year alone. That’s a 60% increase. What’s
