Coal has been used for nearly as long as mankind has thrived. From the times of the cavemen to present day, coal is used for everything from cooking to heating to running steam-powered trains to generating electricity. Today, coal is burned as fuel or gasified to create a synthesis gas (syngas) that can then be used as a feedstock for the production of chemicals, fertilizer and electric power. Coal is also used for producing heat through combustion. The USA, Russia, Australia, China, India and South Africa have the largest coal reserves in the world. Coal is produced in 25 states in the US, spread across three coal-producing regions. The majority of the current production originates in just five states: Wyoming, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Montana. The importance of coal

PPL Corporation (PPL) said that Unit 2 of the Susquehanna nuclear plant near Berwick, Pennsylvania resumed generation after routine maintenance outages. The outage period was extended as the company had to change some damaged turbine blades discovered during an inspection. In the course of the outage the company installed an integrated digital control system for plant equipment and replaced the damaged turbine blades that power the pumps, which in turn provides water to the reactor. The new equipment and the turbine are likely to increase the generation capacity of the unit. The Unit 1 of the nuclear plant was shut down on May 16 for routine maintenance and resumed generation on June 24. After locating cracks in Unit 2, the officials had shut down Unit 1 to inspect its main

These low yields are just one sign of the bond market’s cheery mood. Corporations are finding plenty of buyers for their debt, and many offerings have been completed this week. Among the investment-grade companies selling bonds are Google (GOOG), Norfolk Southern (NSC) and Walt Disney (DIS). Included in this week’s near-record level of junk bond offerings is beleaguered Chrysler, which is refinancing its loan package. Taking advantage of the low interest rates is good

FirstEnergy Corp. (FE) posted fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of 77 cents per share, topping the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 74 cents. The better-than-expected results were driven by lower operation and maintenance expenses, higher investment income, the impact of delivery service improvement riders in Ohio and a lower effective income tax rate. However, earnings in the quarter were below $1.21 reported a year ago, primarily due to lower distribution and wholesale generation revenues, higher purchased power costs, reduced transition cost recovery in Ohio and higher pension costs. For full year 2009, FirstEnergy’s adjusted earnings were $3.75 per share, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.47 but below last year’s earnings of $4.53. Net revenue in the quarter decreased 8% year over year to $3.0 billion, hurt by reduced demand for electricity during

Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) has brought a commercial solar photovoltaic power project under development in San Antonio, Texas. The company purchased the project titled Blue Wing Solar Project from Juwi Solar Inc. based in Boulder, Colorado. The 14 MW project will consist of 214,500 ground-mounted First Solar Inc.’s (FSLR) thin film panels. Duke Energy also got a 30-year power purchase agreement to sell all of the output from the solar farm and associated renewable energy credits to San Antonio-based CPS Energy, one of the largest municipality-owned utilities in the U.S. Duke Energy expects to finish construction on the project by the fourth quarter of 2010. Blue Wing will be the first commercial solar power project Duke Energy will own and operate. As of now, Duke owns and operates 733 MW

Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) got regulatory approval from the Public Service Commission of South Carolina for a general rate case increase of $74.1 million (or 5.2%), which will be effective from Feb. 1, 2010. The hike will increase Duke Energy’s South Carolina residential electricity average monthly bill to $90 – $93 from $80 – $87 for customers. This is the first rate case hike since 1991 in South Carolina for Duke Energy. Duke Energy Carolinas owns nuclear, coal-fired, natural gas and hydroelectric generation. The diverse fuel mix provides approximately 19,000 MW of electricity capacity to approximately 2.4 million customers in a 22,000-square-mile service area in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) has reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Justice on a lawsuit pertaining to a clean air violation at Duke Energy’s coal-fired power Gallagher plant in southern Indiana. Duke Energy will spend about $93 million to settle clean air violations at the plant. Also, as part of the settlement, the company will continue to operate the 560 megawatts (MW) Gallagher facility. Duke Energy plans to convert the facility to gas-fired from coal-fired. Duke Energy estimates the cost to convert the units to gas from coal and install additional pollution controls at $80 million. In addition to resolving litigation, the steps will help the company comply with future federal rules that are anticipated to further limit power plant emissions. Duke Energy

FirstEnergy Corporation (FE), through its subsidiary American Transmission Systems, Inc., entered into an agreement to join PJM Interconnection LLC (PJM). The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the integration last week. Currently, the company’s transmission assets located within FirstEnergy’s Ohio and Pennsylvania Power (Penn Power) utilities are operated by the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator. The integration into PJM is expected to be complete on June 1, 2011, to coincide with delivery of power under the next competitive generation procurement process for the Ohio and Penn Power Utilities. The consolidation is expected to facilitate customers with the benefits of a fully developed retail choice market, and the company with the operating efficiencies of a single Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) – with one set of rules, procedures and protocols.
FirstEnergy Generation Corp., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corporation (FE), has acquired the rights to develop the Norton Energy Storage Project – compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility in Norton, Ohio – from CAES Development Company, LLC. The transaction includes rights to a 600-acre underground cavern, formerly operated as a limestone mine, which is ideal for energy storage technology. FirstEnergy believes that the compressed-air technology at this site will enable the company to store energy at night, when electricity demand is less, and use it during the day when demand escalates. It is normally observed that many renewable energy sources, like wind, are irregular and do not produce power when there is a high demand. Given the energy storage aspects of this project, the company sees Norton Storage as a key
