(EVVV) has recently filed the final module of its Pre-market Approval (PMA) application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Pipeline Embolization Device. The company expects the FDA to schedule an advisory panel review of the proposal in late 2010 and the product approval in 2011. The Pipeline Embolization Device is used for treating large, giant and wide-neck aneurysms. The PUFS (Pipeline for Uncoilable or Failed AneurysmS) was a single-arm study of large and giant, wide-neck or fusiform aneurysms that are typically not coilable. The study enrolled and treated 108 patients at 10 centers in the U.S. and Europe. Results were positive with safety and effectiveness endpoints being achieved.
Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. (CSII) recently received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) conditional Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval. The approval is meant to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the company’s Diamondback 360 degree System used to treat calcified coronary lesions. Cardiovascular Systems is now authorized to begin its pivotal trial, ORBIT II, in early 2010 and initially enroll up to 100 patients at as many as 50 U.S. sites. The Diamondback 360 degree Orbital Atherectomy System is a minimally invasive catheter system used in the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). It has been estimated that the peripheral arterial disease affects eight to twelve million people. It is caused by the accumulation of plaque in peripheral arteries (commonly the pelvis or leg), thus reducing blood flow. Diamondback 360

The catheter was recalled as a result of the device cracking near its marker band. ev3 received these complaints from physicians during the initial limited market release of the device in the U.S. The company initiated the recall of these devices from November 2009. ev3 recalled roughly 350 individual catheters and at present has the possession of all the affected units. The company has already sent a final closure report regarding the voluntary recall of the affected catheters to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
