The Boeing Company (BA), along with Airbus and Embraer S.A. (ERJ), signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on the development of drop-in, affordable aviation biofuels. The three leading airframe manufacturers agreed to seek collaborative opportunities to speak in unity to government, biofuel producers and other key stakeholders to support, promote and accelerate the availability of sustainable new jet fuel sources. The three companies are of the consensus that the biggest threats to the aviation industry are the price of oil and the impact of commercial air travel on environment. By working with Airbus and Embraer on sustainable biofuels, Boeing hopes to accelerate the availability of aviation biofuel. The collaboration agreement supports the industry’s multi-pronged approach to continuously reduce the industry’s carbon emissions. Boeing hopes the partnership would help

We maintain our Neutral recommendation on Embraer S.A (ERJ). Improved worldwide commercial and defense aviation demand reflect a positive outlook for the future. In such a scenario, we believe Embraer will be able to sustain its strong position in the security solution business across Brazilian and other governments with a series of applications. Embraer’s worldwide customer orders servicing and on-time deliveries of corporate, defense jets and executive jet-support structures are worth mentioning. Such efforts are expected to foster stronger global footprints while generating healthy revenue in the near future. We are confident of the company’s diversification into broader defense and corporate jets, which are anticipated to lend more stability to the company’s earnings stream and foster cash flow growth, going forward. Conversely, concern remains as the competitive commercial aircraft manufacturing

We recently downgraded our recommendation on Embraer S.A (ERJ) to Neutral from Outperform. The lowered rating is backed by the rising operating cost and significant international competition in the aircraft manufacturing industry, which may adversely affect the company’s margins and market share, respectively. Moreover, rise in wages in Brazil along with the rising fuel cost weakens our view on the stock. During the second quarter of 2011, the company posted improved results and raised its revenue and margin guidance with a positive outlook. The optimistic outlook is attributable to new strategic agreements, development investments and the anticipation of a strategic order wins from the improved worldwide commercial as well as defense aviation market. Thus, in order to keep up with the raised outlook and maintain market share over the long

The second-largest U.S. airline, Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL), is set to order 100 Boeing (BA) 737 planes in a bid to replace its older fleet with more advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft. The order is estimated to be valued at approximately $8.6 billion. Delta initiated the plan to replace older fleet two years ago. The company sent proposals to many aerospace companies including Airbus, Embraer (ERJ) and Bombardier and Boeing for delivering approximately 200 planes including large, medium and small single-aisle planes for U.S. routes. Given the steeply rising oil prices, fuel-efficient aircrafts are in high demand and carriers are rapidly replacing their older fleet with the more fuel-efficient ones. Recently AMR Corp‘s (AMR) American Airlines ordered 460 single-aisle planes from Boeing and Airbus. Further, United Continental Holdings (UAL) plans

However, since we know that companies that report better-than-expected earnings tend to see their share prices rise after the announcement, and those that disappoint sink, it would be nice to be able to get in front of those that are likely to do better than expected and get out of the way of those which are going to disappoint. Not easy to do, but there is a way to improve your odds. I like to look for the combination of three inter-related factors in trying to figure out who will post positive surprises, and who will disappoint. Check the Recent History I start with the fact that historically, companies that reported a positive surprise last time around are much more likely to do so in

Embraer S.A.(ERJ) has reached its 1000 order milestone for its E-Jets family of aircrafts. This remarkable achievement, which was announced at the 49th Paris Air Show conference in France, took a mere seven years after their first delivery in the E-Jet aircraft segment. The company concluded its recent sales and won orders for 39 Embraer 190 regional jets worth $1.7 billion at the Paris Air Show, which helped them to obtain orders over the 1,000 mark. The versatile E-Jets family of aircraft currently operates four models (E170, E175, E190 and E195) with seating capacities of 70-120. Of these, E190 is being routinely scheduled on long routes over land and water, some exceeding flight times over 5 hours. The company’s higher sales, improved margins, strong firm order backlog and solid cash management strategy appear encouraging. Moreover, Embraer’s expansion in China, Central Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa as well as its diversification into government security and defense mechanism along with the corporate jets are expected to bring in steady growth going forward. Hence, we upgraded the stock to an Outperform recommendation. Our long-term Outperform recommendation on the stock indicates that it would outperform the broader U.S. equity market.
The long wait for the Boeing Company’s (BA) 787 airliner finally came to an end, when the much awaited airplane made its appearance in the International Air Show at Farnborough, United Kingdom. Boeing anticipates to deliver the first 787 to Japan’s All Nippon Airways later this year. The 787 program is presently running two years behind schedule. One of the major reasons for the delay in launching the 787 dreamliner was due to the faulty parts from suppliers. Boeing assembles the different parts of the airplanes and depends on its suppliers from around the world to build large portions of them. Boeing’s 787 is the first passenger jet liner where a major portion will be manufactured from lightweight and environmentally friendly composite material, a break from traditional materials like aluminum

The international economic environment remains an issue for aircraft manufacturer Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica S.A., or Embraer (ERJ), considering the company’s exposure to the U.S. and European markets. Moreover, the company’s high dependence on some models, with a primary focus on American airline companies, exposes it to considerable risks. The considerable strain on the Brazilian airport infrastructure will also impact the company’s local top line results. We do not expect better prospects for the industry. Thus, we have reduced our earnings estimate for fiscal 2010 from $1.39 to $1.31 per ADR and downgraded our recommendation on the ADR from Neutral to Underperform.
Following the earnings release of Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica S.A. – Embraer (ERJ) on April 29, analysts covering the stock have become optimistic and moved their estimates upward. Their optimism is based on first quarter results, which were based on the reduction in short-term loans, consequently reduced interest expenses and thereby enhanced net earnings. However, the marker discounted the news and the stock fell by approximately 8.0%. First Quarter Highlights Embraer has reported an EPADS of 20 cents for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 versus a loss of 13 cents in the year-ago quarter. But this was just half of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 40 cents. Net income reached $35.3 million compared with a loss of $23.4 million in the first quarter of 2009. General Dynamics is a well-run company that is likely to continue to deliver on expectations driven by strong revenue growth, margin expansion and cash flow generation. Strong defense outlays should further improve the company’s outlook for shareholders while an increasing funded backlog and an improving balance sheet are the other positive factors.
Last week, Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica S.A. (ERJ) reported results for the third quarter of 2009. During the quarter, Embraer delivered 57 jets to the commercial aviation, executive aviation and defense segments, compared to 48 jet deliveries in the third quarter of 2008. The company’s firm order backlog on September 30, 2009, totaled US$18.6 billion. Despite a higher number of deliveries, net revenues for the quarter totaled US$1,246.0 million, or a 19.4% decrease from the US$1,546.0 million in net revenues of the same period in 2008. The decrease was basically due to the poor product mix in the quarter, which included 22 Phenom 100 jets delivered. The considerable strain on the Brazilian airport infrastructure will certainly impact the company’s local sales in the coming months. Income from operations totaled US$68.0

We are downgrading our recommendation on Embraer (ERJ) from Neutral to Underperform. The international economic environment remains an issue, considering the company’s exposure to the U.S. and Europe. Moreover, the company’s high concentration for some models, with primary focus on American airline companies, exposes it to considerable risks. However, lower oil prices compared to 2008 and the support of the Brazilian Government appear to be encouraging. We also remain optimistic about the strength in the company’s aircraft family. Nevertheless, the considerable strain on the Brazilian airport infrastructure will certainly impact the company’s local sales.
