Rowan Companies Inc. (RDC) recorded adjusted first-quarter 2011 earnings of 49 cents per share, breezing past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 30 cents but showing deterioration from the year-earlier profit of 56 cents. Total revenue improved 15.8% year over year to $364.3 million in the reported quarter, but failed to match up to our expectation of $401 million. Operational Performance The company’s drilling operations generated revenues of $250.0 million in the quarter, down 24.5% year over year, mainly due to lower average day rates. However, the gross drilling margin decreased to 43% from 59% in the year-earlier quarter. Operating income plunged substantially by 70% to $41.6 million from the year-earlier level.
We maintain our Neutral recommendation on Rowan Companies Inc. (RDC) given its impressive fourth-quarter 2010 results, which comfortably beat both earnings and revenue estimates. We remain on the sidelines owing to the possible oversupply of global jackups in the next few years, thereby reflecting downside pressure on jackup rates. Rowan’s better-than-expected fourth quarter results mainly driven by improvements in its drilling and manufacturing operations. The company’s contract drilling as well as manufacturing improvements were attributable to proficient cost controlling, accompanied by outperformance in the mining products group, for which Rowan expects demand to perk up in 2011. We view Rowan as the key premium jackup company in the bifurcated shallow water market. The company’s premium high-specification rig fleet enjoys greater utilization than most of the other shallow-water fleets. We believe

The company is confident of adding backlog on several high-spec jackups in the near term. This was affirmed by the recent contract award for its first N-class jackup acquired as part of Skeie Drilling & Production ASA. With oil prices remaining strong and tendering activity on the rise, we expect the international jackup market to strengthen further. However, we believe that pricing will be under modest pressure in the near future as new jackups begin to enter the market. Houston, Texas-based Rowan is a provider of international and domestic contract drilling and aviation services. The company’s operations are presently conducted in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, West Africa,

The federal government has decided to lift its deepwater drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico (“GoM”), weeks ahead of its scheduled late-November expiration. The Interior Department, which oversees offshore drilling, stressed that the newly issued technological and safety reforms for offshore drillers – that is expected to cut the risk of another disastrous blowout and oil spill – was the main reason for the early termination of the freeze. As a reminder, on April 20, offshore driller Transocean Inc’s (RIG) ultra-deepwater Horizon drilling platform, contracted to British major BP plc (BP), sank following an explosion while operating in the U.S. GoM off the coast of Louisiana. The incident killed 11 workers and spewed more than 200 million gallons of crude in what is touted as the worst oil spill

While it is well known to the oil industry that the ongoing drilling moratorium will continue through the end of this November, the Obama administration may lift it a little earlier. The Interior Department is set to release new regulations/guidelines for deepwater drilling anytime soon. The government said that it is necessary to introduce the new regulations before the temporary drill ban is lifted. While the ban was meant for deepwater exploration for more than 500 feet, shallow water drillers have also been facing hindrances in getting permission. Last year, the department approved 15 shallow water permits for new wells between June and August. Over the same period this year, the department approved only four. The new rules will come with more strict safety guidelines that may require a certification

OUTLOOK Crude Oil The improving economic scene, both here in the U.S. as well as worldwide, had been the main driver of the oil rally that saw the commodity zoom past the $85 per barrel level in late April/early May 2010. However, in recent days, concerns about the European debt crisis and China’s growth outlook have renewed apprehensions about the global growth and energy demand. As a result, oil prices have slumped to around $76 per barrel. Additionally, high levels of product inventories (gasoline and distillate stocks remain above the upper boundary of the average range for this time of year), along with soaring commercial oil supplies, has further dragged down crude prices, in our view. But far too many factors weigh on oil prices — from OPEC decisions and

The sale of Ocean Shield also reveals drilling contractors’ interest in deepwater investments, despite a cloudy drilling scenario due to the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) moratorium. Recently, Noble Corp.
