The pharmaceutical industry continues to be impacted by major issues such as sluggish prescription trends, European Union (EU) pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition and limited late-stage catalysts. The next five years are expected to witness a significant imbalance between new product launches and patent expirations. All these factors will lead to a slowdown in global pharmaceutical market growth in the next five years. Major revenue generating drugs like Lipitor, Plavix, Lexapro and Zyprexa are expected to confront generic competition over the next five years. In fact, revenues in excess of $30 billion are expected to be lost in 2011 itself due to key drugs like Lipitor and Zyprexa going off-patent. The impact of the genericization of these drugs will be felt significantly in 2012, which will be a challenging year

Mylan Inc. (MYL) recently announced that Endo Pharmaceuticals (ENDP) filed a patent infringement lawsuit in connection with an abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) filed by Mylan with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the generic version of Endo’s acute migraine drug Frova. Mylan believes it is the first company to file an ANDA for generic Frova and is expecting to be granted 180 days of marketing exclusivity once approved. Frova generated revenues of approximately $68.2 million in the trailing twelve months ending on June 30, 2011. This month, Mylan launched the generic version of Uroxatral tablets. Some important products launched by Mylan in the recent past include generic versions of AstraZeneca‘s (AZN) Entocort, Novartis‘ (NVS) Femara and Cephalon‘s (CEPH) Amrix.
Endo Pharmaceuticals (ENDP) recently suffered a pipeline setback with its candidate axomadol performing disappointingly in a mid-stage trial (n=236). Top line results from the study revealed that Endo Pharma’s candidate failed to meet the predetermined end points. The randomized, double blind, two-arm, placebo-controlled study evaluated the candidate in patients suffering from moderate-to-severe chronic low back pain. Endo Pharma in-licensed the US and Canadian development and marketing rights of axomadol from Grunenthal in 2009. The 4-week study evaluated the candidate at doses ranging from 100 mg/day to 300 mg/day. The maintenance phase of the study was 12 weeks. The main goal was a change in the average intensity of pain measured by a numerical rating scale from baseline to the final week of treatment for all patients who were treated with

The FDA stated that it will review Endo Pharma’s response to the agency’s complete response letter (CRL) by December 13, 2011.
Recently, Endo Pharmaceuticals Holdings Inc. (ENDP) completed the purchase of American Medical Systems, a leading pelvic-health device provider, in an all cash deal worth approximately $2.9 billion. By acquiring American Medical, Endo Pharma, a US-based specialty healthcare solutions company that develops branded products and specialty generics, diversified its business and bolstered its urology portfolio. Endo Pharma, while announcing the deal in April 2011, stated that it expected the deal to be accretive to its adjusted earnings with immediate effect following the closure. Endo Pharma had also announced that it expected its 2012 and 2013 adjusted earnings to be boosted by $0.60 and $0.80 per share respectively, as a result of the merger. We note that the purchase of American Medical is the fourth major acquisition for Endo Pharma over the

Leading pelvic-health devices maker American Medical Systems (AMMD) recently initiated a large-scale global registry of penile prosthetic outcomes. The new registry, dubbed PROPPER (Prospective Registry of Outcomes with Penile Prosthesis for Erectile Restoration), is managed by a crew of eminent urologists looking to better characterize patient satisfaction associated with modern penile prosthetic implants. The multi-year company-sponsored PROPPER registry, essentially the first-of-its-kind, has been designed to better understand the real-world outcomes of penile implant surgery to treat erectile dysfunction (“ED”). The registry is expected to enroll more than 1,000 ED patients recommended for penile prosthesis by their physicians. The research, which will initially engage ten sites, will involve a prospective measure of patient responses by investigating physicians at regular intervals (over a 1-5 year period) using questionnaires and electronic data collection.

We are maintaining our Neutral stance on Endo Pharmaceuticals (ENDP) with a target price of $44.00. Headquartered in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and founded in 1997, Endo Pharma is a specialty healthcare solutions company. The company, which operates in the US, reports results through three segments: Branded Pharmaceuticals, Generics and Devices and Services. Endo Pharma offers more than 175 products in the areas of pain management, urology and oncology. In April 2011, Endo Pharma reported its first quarter 2011 results. First quarter adjusted earnings of $1.00 per share were in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate but $0.26 above the year ago figure. The year-over-year rise in earnings was attributable to the higher revenues reported in the first quarter of 2011. We note that Endo Pharma is on an acquisition spree

We maintain our Neutral recommendation on leading pelvic-health devices maker American Medical Systems (AMMD). Its first-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings of 33 cents per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 30 cents. Both revenues and profit rose roughly 4% year over year on the back of higher sales from the Minnesota-based company’s men’s health and women’s health businesses, assisted by a healthy contribution from its international operation. Sales (of $140.8 million) for the quarter also beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate. American Medical’s men’s health division remained on the growth track supported by the strength at its male continence business. Its benign prostatic hyperplasia (“BPH”) therapy business posted healthy growth in the quarter, led by the GreenLight XPS laser therapy and the next-generation BPH therapy system MoXy Liquid Cooled Fiber.
