A disastrous relationship with an insane model changed my thinking pretty quickly. After splitting up with “Crazy Christine,” as my friends used to call her, I became much more interested in what was beneath the surface. The same can be said about my approach to stocks. Typically, a company that’s consistently increasing its earnings has a healthy business, and the stock should emulate that success. But I like to dig deeper and really get to know the company. To do that, I look at cash flow. Cash flow is

We are maintaining a Neutral rating on Alkermes (ALKS) with a target price of $18.00. Last month, Alkermes released its third quarter fiscal 2012 (ended December 31, 2011) financial results. This was the first full quarter for Alkermes plc, formed in September 2011, following the merger of Waltham, Massachusetts based Alkermes, Inc. and Elan Drug Technologies (EDT), the drug delivery unit of Elan Corporation (ELN). The merger has expanded the portfolio significantly resulting in a 185.7% increase in revenues during the quarter. The expanded portfolio caused management to increase the 2012 revenue projection. Revenues are projected in the range of $370-$400 million, up from the previous guidance of $350-$380 million. Given the expanded product portfolio, we expect the company to achieve/beat the increased guidance. Consequently, the Zacks Consensus Estimate of

With 2011 coming to an end, the pharmaceutical industry continues to face challenges like sluggish prescription trends, EU pricing pressure, intensifying generic competition, pipeline failures and limited late-stage catalysts. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. All these factors will lead to a slowdown in global pharmaceutical market growth in the next five years, with major revenue-generating drugs like Lipitor, Plavix, Lexapro and Zyprexa losing exclusivity. In fact, by the end of 2011, drugs worth more than a total of $30 billion will lose patent protection. This includes drugs like Lipitor, Zyprexa and Levaquin. The effect of the genericization of these products will be felt mostly in 2012, which will be a challenging year for several companies. At the

Recently, Alkermes Inc. (ALKS) presented encouraging top line data from an early stage study of its schizophrenia candidate ALKS 9070 (n=32). ALKS 9070 is a once-monthly injectable extended release version of Bristol-Myer Squibb’s (BMY) schizophrenia drug Abilify (aripiprazole). Alkermes intends to present complete data from the study at an upcoming medical conference. The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled 20-week study evaluated the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of ALKS 9070 (once-monthly) at 3 doses in patients suffering from chronic, stable schizophrenia. Data from the study revealed that the candidate was generally well tolerated at all doses and achieved therapeutically relevant plasma concentrations of Abilify. The pharmacokinetic profile backed the once-monthly dosing of ALKS 9070. Encouraged by the positive results, the company intends to commence a pivotal development program for the candidate by the

We are maintaining our Neutral recommendation on Alkermes, Inc. (ALKS) with a target price of $18.00. Alkermes is a drug delivery biotech company which uses its proprietary specialized drug delivery technologies to develop drugs for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, alcoholism and diabetes. We are positive on Alkermes’ decision to buy Elan Corporation’s (ELN) drug delivery unit. The deal is expected to boost Alkermes’ cash earnings immediately following its closure. The product portfolio at Alkermes will be strengthened following the merger. Alkermes currently has two marketed drugs namely Risperdal Consta and Vivitrol in its product portfolio.
Merck KGaA (MKGAF) recently announced its plans to withdraw the regulatory applications filed with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), seeking approval to market cladribine as a treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). This decision comes after Merck KGaA’s discussions with the FDA at the end-of-review meeting related to the new drug application (NDA) for cladribine. Merck KGaA believes that data from the ongoing clinical trials will not be sufficient to address the FDA’s requirements for approval. The company is of the view that to gain US and EU approval, it will have to conduct a new clinical trial program that would take several years to complete. Cladribine is currently marketed as Movectro in Australia and Russia for the treatment of relapsing-remitting MS.

The year-ago quarter saw Elan recording a divestment gain of $107.7 million, which is primarily the reason for the substantial year-over-year decline in earnings. On an adjusted basis, the company reported a loss of 5 cents per share, an improvement from a loss of 11 cents per share in the third quarter of 2009. (PDLI) recently announced that it expects to generate third-quarter 2010 (ending September 30) revenue of $86.0 million, representing an increase of 20% over the year-ago revenue of $71.4 million.
Last week, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) finalized a review of Biogen Idec’s (BIIB) Tysabri (natalizumab) and the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) associated with the prolonged use of the drug. PML is a rare brain infection caused by the JC virus. The agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) arrived at the conclusion that the risk of a patient developing PML increases after having taken the drug for two years or more, though the risk remains low. However, the benefits of the drug outweigh its risks. Given the importance of the early detection of PML, the committee has recommended certain measures to ensure that patients and doctors are aware of the associated risks. Measures include updating product information to include the high risk of developing PML

This brings the total number of PML cases to 28. The company will be providing information on additional cases of PML observed in the month of December shortly.
Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) surgical care company Ethicon decided to acquire a privately-held medical devices company, Acclarent, for approximately $785 million. The transaction, expected to close in the first quarter of 2010, is likely to have a dilutive impact of approximately 3– 4 cents on Johnson & Johnson’s 2010 adjusted earnings per share. Acclarent develops devices to treat abnormalities associated with ear, nose and throat (ENT) with specialization in products used for sinus surgery. We believe there is huge potential for Acclarent’s business, as its balloon sinuplasty technology and other related products offer ENT patients a better alternative compared to currently available treatment options including conventional surgical approaches. Johnson & Johnson has been in an acquisitive mode during the year, the Acclarent buyout being the latest. Earlier this year, in

Arzerra is approved for cancer patients who are no longer responding to the current available treatment options using fludarabine and alemtuzumab. Following the approval, Genmab has become eligible to receive a milestone payment of DKK 116 million (approximately $23 million) from Glaxo. The company reported earnings of 98 cents in the year-ago period. Revenues increased 3% to $1.12 billion, with Tysabri being the primary growth driver.
