(VVUS) recently presented positive data from a late-stage trial on its erectile dysfunction (ED) candidate, avanafil, at the 47th European Association for the Study of Diabetes Annual Meeting. The REVIEW-Diabetes study (TA-302), which enrolled 390 patients with type I and type II diabetes, demonstrated that patients receiving avanafil achieved significant improvement in erectile function.
Vivus Inc.’s (VVUS) first quarter 2011 loss of 12 cents per share was narrower than the Zacks Consensus loss Estimate by 3 cents and the year-ago loss (from continuing operations) by 9 cents. The narrower loss in the reported quarter was attributable to a decline in operating costs. Vivus did not generate any revenues in the reported quarter as in the previous year. Operating expenses at Orexigen declined 35.6% to approximately $9.9 million. Research & development (R&D) expenses plummeted 56% to $4.5 million. General and administrative (G&A) expenses increased marginally to $5.4 million in the reported quarter. The significant reduction in R&D expenses was primarily attributable to the lower spend on clinical development of obesity candidate Qnexa and erectile dysfunction (ED) candidate, avanafil as both of them are nearing approval.

OUTLOOK Like everyone else, the Alternative Energy industry was hit hard by the Great Recession and essentially remains in recovery mode. And while the economy is in recovery mode, so is our hope for the industry. The growth outlook of alternative energy companies is closely tied to the fortunes of the economy. Despite some lingering concerns, the global economic expansion remains on track. Per the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in its latest release U.S. electricity consumption is expected to rise year-over-year by 4.7% in 2010. Going forward, in fiscal 2011 we expect the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to grow 3.7% year-over-year. Along with this, a faster decline in the unemployment rate will jack up electricity demand, funneling investor interest in the sector. Also, the outlook for the major emerging

Con Edison expects to invest the net proceeds from the sale of the common shares in its regulated utility subsidiary, Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., to fund its construction expenditures and other general corporate purposes. Historically, Consolidated Edison has funded a part of its capital programs through earnings dilutive stock issuances. As a result, its outstanding average common shares rose to 283.2 million at the end of the first half of 2010 from 236 million at year-end fiscal 2004. However, that is the output not just of the nation’s factories, but of its mines and utilities as well. Hotter-than-normal weather drove a big increase in utility output that distorted the figures. The output of the nation’s factories fell by 0.4% for the month, but is still 8.3% above year-ago levels. The total industrial production index has been up every month but one since last year. The 0.1% increase this month is a major slowdown from the 1.3% gain posted in May and is also below the 0.3% increase in April, and is the worst showing since the unchanged reading in February, which was at least partially due to the blizzards

Duke Energy will spend about $93 million to settle clean air violations at the plant. Also, as part of the settlement, the company will continue to operate the 560 megawatts (MW) Gallagher facility. Duke Energy plans to convert the facility to gas-fired from coal-fired. Duke Energy estimates the cost to convert the units to gas from coal and install additional pollution controls at $80 million.
Medtronic, Inc. (MDT) recently started a feasibility study of an interventional treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) using a specially designed drug-eluting stent system. The study is known as ZEN (Zotarolimus-Eluting Peripheral Stent System for the Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in Males with Sub-Optimal Response to PDE5 Inhibitors) and is being conducted under an investigational device exemption (IDE) issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
