Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is scheduled to report its first quarter fiscal 2012 results on April 26, 2012. We witness both downward and upward movements in analyst estimates in the build-up to the release. Prior-Quarter Synopsis Amazon reported weak fourth-quarter revenue, but earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 24 cents, or 150%, on improved operating margins and a lower share count. The company reported revenues of $17.43 billion, up 60.3% sequentially and 34.6% year over year (in the middle of management’s guided range but missing Consensus expectations by around 4.3%). Key strategies for driving revenue growth were competitive pricing, free shipping, user experience on Amazon properties and the Amazon Prime program. The gross margin shrunk 280 bps sequentially to 20.7%, but was up 34 bps from the year-ago quarter. The

We will have representation from the who’s who of the corporate world, with a number of bellwether players on tap to come out with results. By the end of the week, we will have a good enough number to judge this earnings season. While earnings will remain the primary focus during the week, we have a number of market-moving economic releases on deck as well. We will get a sense of the consumer economy though the monthly Retail Sales numbers, while the Industrial Production report will give us a good read on the manufacturing sector.
Apple’s share price exceeded $500 this week, giving it the largest market cap of any U.S. company. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) so successfully sells computers, phones and other electronic gadgets that recently announced fourth-quarter profits soared 118% on a 73% increase in revenue. This is unheard of for a $475-billion company. To put this in perspective, earnings at the companies in the S&P 500 stock index are on track to post a 6.6% year-on-year rise for the fourth quarter. Yet once Apple’s earnings are factored out, the expected fourth-quarter gain shrivels to just 2.8%. This so skews results that many Wall Street analysts are now stripping Apple from the index before weighing valuations and making forecasts. Of course, it’s just a matter of time before Apple’s torrid growth begins to wane.

Microsoft Corporation’s (MSFT) second quarter results were a couple of cents higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The last month has seen 10 analysts lowering estimates for the quarter, which took the Zacks Consensus down a penny. Therefore, without the revisions, Microsoft would have exceeded expectations. While the client PC business was slightly impacted by the Thai flooding, all other areas of the business saw good growth. Investors reacted as may be expected, taking share prices up 2.42% in after-hours trading. Revenue Revenue of $20.89 billion was up 20.2% sequentially and 4.7% from last year, just short of consensus expectations of $20.93 billion. Growth in the last quarter was again led by the Entertainment & Devices segment (up triple digits sequentially), with all segments other than Windows growing strong double-digits.

Prior-Quarter Synopsis eBay’s third quarter 2011 earnings per share (EPS) of 40 cents (excluding one-time items and including stock-based compensation) were level with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company reported gross revenue of $2.97 billion, up 7.4% sequentially and better than the Consensus expectation of $2.91 billion. Over 86% of eBay’s total revenue was transactions-based, while the remaining 14% came from marketing services. The World Bank also came out with a lowered growth outlook for the global economy this year, but there is hardly anything newsy there as the markets have been sizing up these growth questions for awhile now. On the domestic economic front, we have the PPI and Industrial Production reports on deck, but the focus today will be on the busy earnings calendar. The most important earnings report this morning is from Goldman Sachs (GS), which came out with an earnings beat, though its revenue numbers missed expectations.
With Thanksgiving drawing to a close and Black Friday shopping gathering steam, this is clearly a retail weekend. Brick-and-mortar outlets, such as Target Corp (TGT), BestBuy Inc (BBY), Macy’s Inc. (M) and Kohl’s Corp (KSS) opened their stores at midnight yesterday, vying with each other to catch the first shoppers. Shoppers, too, have been lining up to bust the doors for the best of the selection and deals. While consumer dollars will no doubt pour in, this year is different from others.
Amazon.com’s (AMZN) third quarter earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 10 cents, or 41.7%. While revenue growth remains strong, Amazon’s bottom line was again impacted by higher expenses. We continue to believe in the company’s strategy, since we think the growth in the e-commerce segment is sustainable. However, investors were clearly disappointed, pulling share prices down 12.44% in after-hours trade. Revenue Amazon reported revenue of $10.88 billion, up 9.7% sequentially and 43.9% year over year (exceeding the mid-point of management’s guided range but missing consensus expectations of around $10.93 billion). Revenue growth was 39% excluding favorable currency impact. Nearly 55% of sales were generated in North America, representing a sequential increase of 9.7% and a year-over-year increase of 43.8%. The balance came from the International segment, which grew 9.7%

The earnings parade continues even as the market tries to come to terms with the Apple surprise and waits for the expected weekend deal out of Europe. We also have economic data this morning about September CPI and Housing Starts, but they will likely have less traction in today’s market given the focus on earnings and Europe. The September CPI number was largely inline expectations, both on the ‘headline’ as well as ‘core’ basis. Given the recent pullback in commodity prices and the continued slack in the broader economy, inflation will likely have less staying power than would otherwise be the case. However, persistent ‘hot’ CPI readings will make it difficult for Bernanke to rally all FOMC members behind him as we have seen in recent meetings. The Fed dissenters

Earnings Preview 10/14/11 While the earnings season kicked off this past week, only 38 firms reported. The game really gets under way next week, when we will get reports from 336 firms, including 99 members of the S&P 500. Thus, by the end of the week we will have a very good idea of how the overall season will go. Not only will there be a lot of reports, but many of those we get will be very important ones. The table at the end of this report reads like a who’s who of American industry, including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), General Electric (GE), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Intel (INTC) and McDonald’s (MCD). And that’s just the first half of the alphabet!

Earnings Preview 7/15/11 Second quarter earnings season is now under way, but things really start to move into high gear next week. There will be 348 firms reporting, and 108 of those are in the S&P 500. By next Friday we should have a very good handle on how the overall earnings season will go. The firms reporting this week are sort of like a who’s who of U.S. industry including: Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), Bank of America (BAC), Caterpillar (CAT), General Electric (GE), International Business Machines (IBM), Intel (INTC), McDonald’s (MCD), Schlumberger (SLB) and Verizon (VZ). That is an interesting cross section of U.S. business. We have a relatively light economic data calendar, so earnings should be front and center, along with the sovereign debt situations on both

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) has announced that it will acquire UK-based online bookseller, The Book Depository International. The acquisition will add over six million titles to Amazon’s already large stock of books. The cost of the transaction was not revealed and the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. It is unclear whether The Book Depository will retain its individuality and continue to operate as a separate website or if it will be folded into Amazon.com. But in any case, Amazon will reduce its competition in the e-commerce market as the Book Depository is one of its major rivals. Amazon has an internationally focused website in the United Kingdom and the acquisition of The Book Depository should allow it to increase its exposure in the European market. Additionally,

Not unsurprisingly, eBay Inc (EBAY) has stated that it would soon be offering a fulfillment service to sellers, similar to the service already being offered by Amazon.com (AMZN), as well as fulfillment companies employed by other online retailers. In fact, the company’s recent acquisition of GSI Commerce was partially on account of the latter’s over 2.6 million square feet of warehouse fulfillment space across the United States, Canada and the U.K. eBay will retain seven of the nine fulfillment centers it acquires from GSI. The fulfillment service is intended to help woo large sellers that provide a much bigger opportunity, according to eBay. The company estimates that the large seller segment opportunity is currently $160 billion compared to the small seller opportunity of just around $12 billion and the small

The Electronic Commerce, or e-commerce, industry is one of the most developing sectors of the economy. The industry is evolving very rapidly, so data collection and evaluation are particularly difficult. Consequently, one has to rely largely on surveys by both government and private agencies. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the manufacturing sector is the largest contributor to e-commerce sales (42% of their total shipments), followed by merchant wholesalers (23.4% of their total sales). These two segments make up the business-to-business category. Retailers and service providers generated just 4.0% and 2.3%, respectively of their revenues online, a slightly higher percentage than they were in the prior year. The Bureau categorizes these two segments as business-to-consumer. The business-to-business category makes up 91% of total e-commerce sales, with the balance coming from

E-commerce service provider, eBay Inc. (EBAY) has reached an agreement with GSI Commerce Inc. (GSIC) to settle claims made by shareholders of the latter. The claims, which were related to eBay’s proposed acquisition of GSI, had been filed in the Delaware state court. Per the settlement terms, holders of GSI stock will receive 33 cents a share in addition to the $29.25-a-share payment already agreed to by eBay. The investors will get the settlement money after the acquisition is wrapped up on June 17. eBay had announced its intention to acquire GSI Commerce for $2.4 billion ($29.25 per GSI share) back in March. Close on the heels of the announcement, the merger was opposed by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (Septa), which filed a complaint in the Delaware Chancery Court, stating

Google Inc (GOOG) announced its digital wallet payment system amongst much controversy. Very soon after the company announced the new payment system at its New York offices along with partners Citibank, a subsidiary of Citigroup (C) and Mastercard Inc. (MA), eBay Inc (EBAY) and its payment unit Paypal slapped a suit on Google, as well as a number of key Google personnel. The digital wallet is a point-of-sale (“POS”) solution that would enable an Android phone user to wave the phone near a POS terminal to make a purchase. The technology that makes this possible is called Near Field Communication (“NFC”) and is already available in parts of Europe. The boards of directors of Microsoft and Skype have approved the deal and the two companies expect to obtain regulatory approval before year’s end. This was in spite of the fact that there were a significant number of upward revisions to the Consensus over the past 3 months and even during the last 7 days.
With the economic backdrop steadily improving, albeit at a very slow pace, the outlook for the holiday shopping season has brightened. According to NRF’s 2010 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, U.S. consumers plan to spend an average of $688.8 on holiday-related shopping, a slight rise from last year’s $681.8. Given the macro challenges, consumers now prefer price over fit and merchandise quality as major determinants for their shopping choices. Across all income levels, all respondents ranked price as the most important reason for store choices, significantly ahead of other criteria. Therefore, retailers are offering right-trend and well-designed assortments without compromising quality in order to improve merchandise margins, in addition to compelling price points.
Expanding its global prepaid business, yesterday MasterCard Inc. (MA) announced the acquisition of UK-based largest non-bank foreign exchange supplier and cross-border service provider, Travelex’s prepaid Card Program Management (CPM) division for an all-cash deal of £290 million (US$458 million). Additional earn-out of up to £35 million (US$55 million) has also been agreed upon meeting certain performance targets. The deal is expected to close by the first half of 2011. The CPM segment of Travelex handles and delivers consumer and corporate pre-paid travel cards or card passports, which works as an electronic substitute to travellers’ cheques. These travel cards also allow consumers to hold in good foreign exchange rates when they buy them, thereby securing them from the adversities of currency fluctuations. Yes, if economic readings keep coming in like today. And yes, if corporate earnings keep beating expectations. (Meaning the quality 1-2 punch that got us to Dow 11,000 in the first place).
Free computer-to-computer voice calling has been around for years but using computers to make calls to landlines or mobile phones may soon be in vogue. Taking a leaf out of Skype’s book, Google (GOOG) announced recently that it will let users of its Gmail service in the U.S. and Canada call landlines or mobile phones for free — at least until the end of the year. Google’s announcement to add the phone calling feature to its Gmail service is not likely to immediately challenge Skype’s dominance of the Internet telephony business, but is expected to ratchet up competition. The announcement of the service is also reflective of Google’s attempt to foray beyond its traditional forte, the search business. For Google, it could also be a way to tap larger audience

Analysts believe that the e-commerce sector will grow at the expense of brick-and-mortar outfits. Moreover, given the conservative guidance provided by most, chances of positive surprises are strong. I want to tackle those issues in a public forum, shedding some light on the element of risk, plus the rules and regulations surrounding options trading and brokerages… How to Handle the “Options Risk Myth” Since options trading was introduced, the myths and misconceptions about them have been as common as the sunrise. But let’s play some “point/counter-point…” Point: Many people believe options are risky. Riskier than stocks anyway. One

Amazon.com (AMZN) reported first quarter earnings that beat the Zacks Consensus by 6.45%. The positive earnings surprise was less than in prior quarters, as estimates were already adjusted to reflect pre-recession type growth. First Quarter Highlights Earnings were negatively impacted by competitive pricing, mix and currency, with the improvement in North American margins offsetting the decline in International. However, the company saw solid growth in revenue. Revenue increase of 45.9% from the year-ago quarter exceeded the high end of management’s guidance of a 32% to 43% increase. The improvement was attributable to a 40% growth in units and an increase in active customer accounts to 114 million, which included Chinese customers for the first time. Amazon also benefited from higher third-party sales and a 22% increase in active seller accounts.

The Federal Communications Commission’s (“FCC”) so-called “Net Neutrality” rule suffered a big blow as a federal appeals court ruled that the US regulator lacks the authority to impose such regulations. The US Appeals Court for the District of Columbia unanimously voted to rule out FCC’s authority to dictate the way the incumbent cable and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) manage their networks. The court’s decision will not only dwindle the prospect of Net Neutrality but may also affect the implementation of FCC’s recently unveiled National Broadband Plan which is aimed at offering far-reaching accessibility of broadband Internet in the US. As a reminder, the Net Neutrality regulation is aimed at preventing the ISPs and cable multi-service operators (MSOs) from blocking or restricting access to legal web site contents or applications.
